too many to name.

alexi laiho for the rockstar status

john petrucci for the insane picking precision (lots of odd groupings thrown in between

Richie Kotzen (you all suck if you don't know him) for pure jazz/blues virtuosity, so much emotion and thought in the choices of his notes (yay for mixolydian and lydian)

Greg Howe, amazing jazz fusion guitar player, made a crazy project with Richie kotzen called "tilt"

Dan Mongrain of Martyr, his incredible song writing skills still elude me, and he has a really amazing legato technique. and he's a ****ing quebecker too!!!

Also, Adagio's Stephan Forté is just crazy. really, nothing else to be said. listen and you'll understand

Vai and satch are givens, but my top favorite would be richie kotzen actually, only for sheer variety. (blues/shred/jazz/rock/metal/folk/anything playable on guitar)

Morello's the man.
I bet you think that's funny, don't you.

I voted Kurt Cobain because I'm an *******. Where's Bob Dylan on that list? The best guitarist is probably some fat suburban kid that no one will ever know about.

Jonn Pettrushie!!

He's got the chops, he's got the riffs, he's got the diversity.

Also: The poll should be of the "select multiple" variety.

Thats not the point i'm getting at, you can get some guitarists who can play like lightning and compose the most complex pieces of music around, this doesn't make them a good guitarist, because the music could be considered by many folks to be crap.

Kurt Cobain wrote awesome guitar parts, and for that he is an awesome guitarist.

Thats why NEVERMIND has sold more than all of van halens albums combined...
Eddie can play at blindingly fast speeds but can he write smells like teen spirit?

Writing good guitar parts doesn't make you a good guitarist, it makes you a good writer. I've written fanfare scores back when I was a music teacher, but I'm far from being amazing on all the instruments I wrote parts for. However, the music was still good (you get the idea).

Nevermind is a 10x platinum record. 10 000 000 copies.

Van Halen's first self-titled sold 10.3 million copies. 1984 was also 10x platinum.

Fanboys suck.

i suppose that makes sense when you sit down and write a song, but i've seen nirvana videos with kurt just sitting there jamming out awesome riffs, truely a masterful guitarist, not based on his amazing technique, but based on how well he can use the intrument to craft brilliant songs.

I love Nirvana and Kurt Cobain, but let's not pretend that Kurt Cobain wasn't ripping off Bob Dylan. Also, Kevin Shields of My Bloody Valentine is pretty damn amazing.

He probably doodled this chord progression long before cobain touched a guitar. so yeah, he could probably write something similar, except it'd have a rockin' vibe to it.

Cobain knabbed that riff from Smells Like Teen Spirit off a Boston song ( More Than A Feeling? Perhaps another one). He also knabbed the riff from Come As Your Are from Killing Joke.

But you could also argue he made those riffs work, which he did, the originals weren't really popular. His guitar style, though simplistic, was innovative compared to other mainstream music at the time, and it worked as well, sounded great for what it was. But what really comes into question in these situations, is what really makes a guitar player great.

But that's irrelevant right now, someones favorite player is a matter of opinion and "what they like", so it's pointless to argue someone's opinion.
2005-05-15, 10:35 AM #68
I never understood why "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was such a big hit. I mean, I can only listen to the same riff for so long before it gets boring.

Doesn't anyone else get sick of F5-Bb5-Ab5-Db5 after a while?
2005-05-15, 11:48 AM #69
Smells like teen spirit is my least favourite Nirvana song there is.

To all of you that said Cobain wasn't a good guitarist, listen too All about a Girl or Aero Zeppelin.

Trust me.
2005-05-15, 12:17 PM #70
You mean "About A Girl?"

It's a good song, but nothing that a beginner can't play.

How do you know this? just because they sound somewhat similar doesent mean he stole it, same thing with Come As You Are. His riffs sound ten times better.

He admits to it in his journals, if you've ever read them, it's a great read if you haven't. Killing Joke even filed a lawsuit against the band ( That's what Dave Grohl is on one of their last albums).

Why the '5' notation? Is that a grunge thing or something?

5 is used to indicate a diad between the root and its fifth. it's used in power chords.
