Punk is dead, it has been, and always will be, because what punk existed to rebel against isn't there in the same sense.
Punk was not created to rebel against a single idea or something. Punk isn't about a specific message. Like I said earlier, and Eversor kind of hinted at, punk is about energy. Most early punk bands sang about how they had so much wasted energy. Most punk also has a rebellious energy, but that's just one type of energy.

As long as there's a ****load of energy in punk, it won't be dead. That's why pop-punk sucks; they don't seem to have that energy anymore.

You people saying that punk sucks haven't even heard real punk rock, and that just shows your ignorance. Don't judge something you don't know anything about.

I know plenty about it...I laugh at how Eversor thinks Punk is the saving grace of music, the end-all of underground, blah blah bull****.

It did not save Rock--Hair Metal, Jambands, and Jazz-influenced rock did (See: Pink Floyd, Pantera, Led Zeppelin, etcetera, etcetera).

What was there to rebel against? The government in America had just uncovered one of the hugest scandals of all time. Civil rights and liberties were being fought over voraciously. Governments were shrouded in cloak and daggers mentalities where they got away with a lot more than they should have just to beat Communism.

Honestly, Eversor, don't make me out to be some ignorant kid who goes "PUNK SUCKS LOL" because that's not it. Since the end of Punk's reign (1960s-80s, arguably), there has been but a VERY SELECT FEW bands I have drawn any enjoyment from--the only one that I can think of off the top of my head being Against Me! (though one could argue Less than Jake is punk, as some of their CDs don't give off as much of a ska atmosphere as the others, the only other 'punk' band I've enjoyed). Punk has been raped, smashed, and destroyed until there's not even any good 'underground' bands left. And don't tell me that's how it is with every genre--Ska is still pure (with the exception of Relient K...christ they suck), Rap still has it's Rhymesayers (Sage Francis, Atmosphere, Eyedea and Abilities, Aesop Rock), Rock has its...okay bad choice, and Metal, as always has its greats.

Next time, try to get informed about what I know instead of labelling me as an ignorant know-nothing.

PS--Punk did not create the term 'underground', so stop acting as if they did. Honestly, there's been a LOT of underground bands, since long before Punk was around. Ever hear of Jazz artists? What do you call playing in nothing but Negro Harlem and Louisiana clubs and never being heard except by African Americans until a big breakthrough about halfway through your career of popularity? Seems pretty damn 'underground' to me.

you're all wrong

1) punk doesnt suck, its simply a music form which exists, theres no suckage to attribute to it

2) people are allowed to not like punk, disliking punk doesnt mean they "dont get it", i hate journey, and i'm sure if the most hardcore journey fan played me journey songs for days on end, until i "got it", i'd still ****ing hate it!

yoshi - pure ska, operation ivy, punky awesomeness too.

Sure people are allowed to dislike punk. What I will not stand for is people going around just yelling "Punk sucks". No matter how much you personally dislike it, you can't say the entire genre (or the entire genre after a certain period, even) sucks without some sort of justification, of which I have seen none.

The musical waves are not up to other musical waves standards. I just tested it in audoligy.

What do you EXPECT in "proof" I can't prove to you something sucks, it just does in my opinion.

Yeah but smocc, if someone says punk sucks.... it doesnt make it law, it doesnt mean everyone around them will be forced to believe it...

i thought massassi got past the whole OMG OPINION phase.
2005-11-15, 7:51 AM #48
But saying something sucks isn't stating an opinion. Someone saying "punk sucks" isn't making it fact, but that person seems to be trying to make it fact. Saying "I think punk sucks" is different than saying "punk sucks".

Just put "I think" before you say something sucks, and I'll be happy.

...but

putting "i think" in front of it doesnt make it seem more like an opinion!

maybe some people are just gullable.
2005-11-16, 2:11 PM #50
Exactly. I thought it was assumed that opinion-type statements don't need an "I think" in front of them to be such. "This sucks." is OBVIOUSLY an opinion.

i'll admit that there is a lot... and i mean a LOT of punk that is absolutly horrible, however there are actually quite a few good bands that either are still punk or started out being punk or are Heavily influenced by punk.

lets take a look...

old rancid, they are good at their instruments(sp) they have, if nothing else, entertaining messages in their songs.

bad religion. nuff said.

one of the oldst punk bands who are actually still around, The Damned

older AFI: Black sails in the sunset, all hallows ep. ect...

a nice little band called nerve agents, unfortunatly their not around anymore.

then theres the whole plethera of bands who are heavily, and i mean heavily influenced by punk.

first and foremost...

The Cure.

siouxsie and the banshees

KMFDM

Bauhaus.

ect...

and what punk rock mean depends of where you are. some people think it started in newyork at venues like cbgb and bands like the ramones. and who know why it began.

others believe it started in the uk with the sex pistols the clash and the damned and such. in this version punk started because the kids were fed up thith the society and condition of the current government and what not.

but anyways the point is, if it werent for punk rock there would not be a lot of bands out there today that are actually descent(sp again?)

If you know who this man is, and what band he sang for, you are allowed to talk about punk music. If you do not. Shut up.

Same goes for Jello Biafra. Jello is god.

Because not knowing who some random guy is has any bearings on anyone's opinion on a brand of music at all?

Who is Henry Rollins?

Thank you, Alex. I'll stay in the category and go with "Men Who've Collaborated with William Shatner" for $600.

The band of Bono's ego! And I thought the world was WORSE off, because of U2? I have never liked a single U2 song, and NOT out of discrimination towards U2. I really really give their songs a try, and no. I can't handle the high pitched moans, the repeating of the same lines over and over and over again, the shallow ideals and excuses for 'morality' no. I can't handle U2.

Well, since this was a discussion on good punk bands....... and all I really listen to is punk and ska.....and some hip-hop stuff (d*** you Thrawn)

Heres something that I think describes the "punk" mentality

"Punk is the personal expression of uniqueness that comes from the expieriences of growing up with our human ability to reason and ask questions"

Alot of people don't know what it means to be "punk" and alot of people never will. It's more than the spikes on people clothes, the colors in their hair, it's a way of life. And I doubt most people will ever understand that.

Well enough talk, heres some great punk bands that I think everyone should definitely check out.

- Rancid (of course.... Out Come The Wolves has to be one of the best albums ever recorded)
- Bad Religion (you can't go wrong here, it's is considered by many to be "light" but I'm still in love with them)
- Dropkick Murphys (pretty mainstream, and pretty awesome at the same time, it's Punk infused with some Celtic rock, similar to flogging molly, but a whole lot better)
- Cheap Sex (mike virus's new band, just one word to describe them.....amazing)
- The Virus (a great band, no longer around, but they had a good run, check out No Where To Hide, one of my favorite albums)
- The Unseen (angry, hateful, yet musical, I love these guys)
- Rocket From The Crypt (I havn't heard a whole lot from this band, but what I have is great, very melodic)
- Choking Victom (need I say more?)
- Leftover Crack (pretty much just un-used songs from Choking Victom, it's the same band)
- Operation Ivy (Tim armstrong and Matt Freemans old band, before Rancid)
- Lars Frederickson and The Bast***s ( a really great band :p )
- Pulley
- Roger Miret and The Disasters (Roger Miret, from Agnostic Front, this is his new band)

The list goes on for a little bit, and those are the more modern bands.

Oh, and my favorite ska type band is The Bandits Of The Acoustic Revolution........ they only use acoustic and non-electric instruments.... and it's great.

You're unique, just like those other 200000 kids that dress and act like you do.

You need more stuff by them! They're one of my favorite bands because they pump out such high quality tunes time and time again. They have not made one bad song ever.

Thanks for assuming that I dress and look like every other "punk" rob. To tell you the truth, I don't even dress like that, I just like the music, like the shows, and enjoy going to them.

When I was younger, I didn't grow up in a very good neighborhood, and I have a friend that still lives there. WE've seen some scary stuff together, and we didn't much money, so we wore what we could find, and I guess we'de come off as punks to some. But what gets me is all these privilaged and "rich" kids who dress up, and think that they are punk. The cut and ruin perfectly good clothing that I'd love to have just to look "punk" and "lower class" :(
