JK CTF is back!

Hi all, Daft_Vader here. I haven't seen many ctf maps lately, so I'm taking a shot at it. This is my first multiplayer map ever, and it's dubbed "Proelium". Please go easy on me; I don't mind suggestions, but try to mix the good with the bad. Thanks.

The level has a nice "spine" that's for sure. And if those glowing imperial insignias are jumppads they're the best ones I've ever seen!

Despise Jump Pads.... How can you despise them? They're so... bouncy. Not to mention the fact that they take you waaaaaaaaay up high to places you can't reach otherwise.

I suggest you add four mip-map levels and then quadruple the mip-map distance in the level header, because liney textures like that are like a needle in your eye. The architecture is nice, but could use some better lighting, it's like fullbright, which is another eye sore.

Wow, I'm so happy, my first ever screen of the Day! THanks so much everyone!

About the lighting, I still haven't finished building the level, so I'm not going to mess around with lighting until I'm finished. I'm thinking about adding some traps and secret areas. Anyone think that's a good idea?

About the bounce pads, they really do help the level. They allow you to get around the map very quickly, and because of the way they're configured, they really help you pursue someone who's got the flag, or to evade capture.

I'm really happy with the textures, but someone said I could improve the visual quality of the level. How, with F6? I've already changed a lot of that stuff, but you say there's more I can do?

In MatMaster, Mat16, JKPaint, whatever you use, use the automatic mipmap creator feature. Mipmapping is a technique used in 3D that reduces the texture quality with distance to improve performance, with the idea being that you don't notice it that much in the distance anyway. In JK, that MATs themselves contain the mipmaps, it's not done with hardware like newer games. So in MatMaster or whatever, you have to create the mipmaps, which is real easy. But then if you play your level with this, you'll find that it's really ****ing ugly, because the textures mip at far too small a distance. So just change the mipmap distances in your level header from 1 2 3 4 to 2 4 6 8, or something higher. I'd also bump up the 3DO LODs to a similar set of numbers.

Here's a picture of the Lobby. Still unfinished (I haven't put in the scoreboard yet), but I got some nice sky and coronas. I'm thinking about maybe adding some other stuff, but I can't think of anything off the top of my head; any ideas, anyone?

I don't much like these textures for JK but the architecture is looking pretty good so far. I didn't read the entire thread, so my apologies if it was already commented on, but if you're going to use items such as doors and elevators, I'd suggest creating your own 3do's that match the texture set that you plan to use (even if it's the one you're using in these screenshots). I'd like to see more screenshots of this map when possible, mainly something that distinguishes as CTF (right now it just looks like a DM map).

Lose the glass. It has no place there. I'd also stay away from secret areas in CTF maps, but the traps sound good to me.

Anyone who doesn't like bounce pads should refrain from playing, much less downloading the map.

Here is the level with some pretty lighting and tinting. I'd like to have yellow beams of light hanging from the ceiling, but every time I've tried I can't get it working. Would someone kindly make me a yellow light beam 3do, like in Unreal Tournament? My Email address is wondermog@bellsouth.net

[Edit] Thanks for your suggestions and comments eveyone. And Blood Asp: I'll lose the glass in the lobby, I think you're right.

I am also working on conveyor belts going between the two bases, just to keep up with my theme that this place is an abandoned warehouse/factory. Plus it just makes the level a heck of a lot more interesting!

My level is completely different, it just *unfortunately* happens to employ a commonly used texture scheme in the JK editing community, which, I might remind you, was designed for everyone's use.

Aww shucks, thanks PJB! I think you're a pretty cool guy myself [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif] Thanks for the comments, they're certainly the most "enthusiastic" I have yet received. Oh and FYI, though they look like sprites and do everything that sprites do, those little lights are actually 3dos with a cog attched called coronas (not to be confused with the beer [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif] ). Pretty nifty aren't they. If you'd like to use them in your level, just check out the tutorial on Massassi called "Advanced Lighting: Part 1".

Spiral's shots are too dark for SotD, and Clan Ruthervain's are only of models; not ingame.

Also, Daft_Vader's shots are pretty enough for SotD.

(note: I didn't choose this as SotD; but I'm sure whoever did was thinking along the same lines as me.)

Maybe that's because they've probably had numerous SotDs, whereas I, a comparative "newbie" have had none up until now. Doesn't it seem fair, to "share". Besides, as I'm new with editing, maybe the nice guys at Massassi just wanted to give me a break - getting SotD is always a great encouragement to any author, and I'm sure it's going to give me the confidence nad reassurance I need to get the project finished.

Besides, there's always next week for Spiral and Clan_Ruthervain! I appreciate the talent and commitment the display and wish them best of luck in their editing! [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

Personally, I think they're decent textures (far better than I could do), but they do 'feel' a but out of place in this particular game.

Fine then, he's beating himself up, I don't know why though. They look great. And what is everyone's problem with these textures? They look entirely appropriate to me. If people hate them so much, would someone knidly give me show me the whereabouts of better textures. Thankyou.
