Oh not much...

This terrain (the green textures) is probably going to NEED to be a clipped .ase model.. if I can figure out how to do that.. Because right now.. well.. the brush count is just a tad NUTS.. 32708 brushes.. that's not good. That's probably somewhere around the brush limit. Or not. I'm not sure. But yeah.. this is so big it might be TOO big. Maybe, maybe not. Who knows? [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

Yeah, I agree, you might want to change the grass texture to caulk_noclip or glass. I like those better.

Yay! fixed the problem with the numerous brushes.

I had the divisions in EasyGen waaaay too hit. cut them down by half and now I'm down to a terrain that, despite being slightly less detailed, is much slimmer, trimmer, and better for everyone. It weights in at a healthy 8192 brushes now. YAY! [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif] Now to get the real meat of this level done...

That's still ridiculously high, an optimized static mesh may be better.

Oh, and I don't think brush limit is a problem. Brushes aren't even handled by the engine, only the compiler. It's 32,768 because that's the maximum a short integer can store. All you have to do is open up the Q3Map2 source code, change it to a regular integer or long integer, and the problem is solved. If ydnar hasn't done it already.

If there's some way to slap a metashader on an optimized mesh, then I'd go for it, naturally...

Edit: BUMP!

And if anyone can inform me as to how to get Q3map2 toolz to compile a JA map when it won't recognize the JA executables, I'd be much obliged...

**** YOU GONK!!! Why does your work have to be so... beautiful?! [starts crying] Still, looking forward to seeing it in JA. i just hope that i have JA by the time that you release it.

Oh, and btw, i second Emon't idea for the static mesh, mainly because that way you wouldn't need to use a super-computer to load the map. Might as well ask: is this an extension of that map tht you were showcasing over the summer?

Nice, the structures contour the terrain especially well. But how expansive is the landscape going to be?

maby you could save the terrain as a separete .map and compile that and convert that bsp to an ase then stick it in your map.

moneyobie: terrain is pretty big. The map is gonna be REALLY LARGE. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif] Like massive large.

Echoman: gap in the bridge because I'm planning on putting something _nice_ on the other side and don't want to make it TOO easy to get to..

S0ldi3rz3r0: (and yes, I copy|pasted your name [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]) This is a map in the same general theme (and it might end up in the SP map you're talking about), but this is going to be a MP map for JA. Probably FFA. I might make it duel as well but.. yeah it might be too big.

To give you all a sense of the size.. a 16 - 25 player limit would probably be somewhere around the right amount... at least in terms of player limit.. not sure what I'll do with ammo, weapons, etc.

For q3map2toolz, copy the jamp.exe executable, then rename it to jk2mp.exe. Easy as that.

Yeah, the BSP size shouldn't be too huge.. the textures will be the big issue. I don't plan on including any custom sounds or any of that so aside from (hopefully) some custom models (primarily for the portal skybox and/or terrain), they'll be the biggest files in there...

GothicX: excellent.. I figured it was something like that. Thanks! [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

If anyone wants to, oh, model a corellian corvette (doesn't have to be to scale w/ the player) or somesuch thing.. and can get someone to skin it well... hehe.. It'd definitely have a place in this level...

I have to look into ARIOCHE. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

Oh, and I compiled the map, but unfortunately it was alllllll default texture... probably because I was basically tricking q3map2 toolz, and the fact that almost all the textures are custom.

Anyways, when the JA SDK comes out (AND WHERE IS IT RAVEN?! ME WANT.) , I'll get an in-game shot. I do want to look into ARIOCHE though.. Although I know pretty much nothing about how it's implemented.

Well, thanks to buck I found a beta copy of GTKRadiant, compiled with that. Seems that JA is having problems loading the metashader for the terrain.. I know there was a guy who said he had done this, either here or on the JK.net forums (or both), but I can't seem to find said post, and thus I'm not quite sure what's not working. Everything seems to be in order, I've got everything where it should be, it just seems that the game isn't recognizing something. Very strange.

Regardless, I'm going to HAVE to put in a VERY DISTANT foghull. Why? The map is so omghugemassiveliekxbox that from one end you CANNOT SEE the other because it's actually not BEING DRAWN. Yes, that's right, it's larger than the draw distance. Which is kinda crazy. All the snipers will have a field day with this one, provided I feel generous and give them a disruptor.. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

Because the map is just so massive, I think I might just throw in a vehicle or two (and obviously the appropriate heavy weapons to destroy them), both to spice things up, and because the map is simply quite large, and running around it on foot would get quite boring, I imagine.

Yeah it does, because SoF2Map produces smaller BSPs.

Yes, Party Crasher is dead.

Gonk, ARIOCHE lets you use a heightmap with a patch mesh I believe, which doesn't have a hit on the BSP size, but may not be as good as an optimized ASE model, if we can get metashaders on those.

Bots are a definite, though I'm not sure how they'd react to vehicles (or if they'd even react to them at all).

I'm trying like hell to get this metashader working, so I can get an idea of how everything is being lit by the skybox, and so that I can continue on with other parts of the level and actually release it.. but so far no luck.

Wait, since when is Raven releasing an SDK for Jedi Academy? I knew not of this...

I think ARIOCHE randomises something or another in the way it works, not sure but that's what I heard. Ugh, I'll only start mapping stuff when Half-Life 2 and it's SDK come out. I heard Radiant is butt-hard to use.

Bit of an update.. I HAVE THE TERRAIN METASHADER WORKING CORRECTLY.

This is huge, as it's not exactly easy to do as such in JA. (Thanks to GothicX for the link to rgoer's mini-tutorial on the JK.net forums.) Anyways, I'm working on getting the terrain lightmapped and getting some funky grass-type stuff (like in Enemy Territory on the Radar level) to display on certain parts of it...

Then it's on to more archi and I can actually get to the real meat of the level. I'd give it a week or two before I get a beta ready, and then anywhere from a few days to a week+ for release, depending on any bugs/weird stuff that happens.

Edit: Anyone with any kind of shader knowledge can check out this thread on Q3W if you'd like to help...

I know nothing of ARIOCHE, nor how to implement it.

Edit: I've been a busy little bee..

Textures on the terrain are a bit muddy because I managed to fark the scaling on 'em. This will be fixed in the next compile. I need to get Q3map2 toolz to play nice with JA so that I can do more advanced lighting. I also need to get some fog in as the draw distance is quite pronounced, so the skybox you see (by Emon) might not stay (as it wouldn't show through the fog anyways, and I NEED to have the fog.. trust me).
