Dark Tide IV (It's for DF, don't laugh)
2003-07-31, 4:43 AM #1
Yeah I know, DF is obsolete, and I'm sure you'll all wet yourselves laughing, but what the hell.

These are shots from The Dark Tide IV, and as you can probably tell, it's set on Coruscant.

I know that Massassi is a JK/MotS/JO/JA website, but apparantly anything's welcome in the showcase forum.

That's a better Coruscant level than what I've ever seen in JK/JO...so don't be ashamed. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif] You got the scale right, at the least... it looks massive.

Thanks [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]
Because of the severe limitations of DF (homming if you make an area too large) we've had to use minatures to create the sense of illusion. In reality the distant skyscrapes are only a short distance away. The illusion works quite well though, except when you throw TD at the buildings [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

That's actually very good, considering the engine. I couldn't even do that in JK... not that I was ever that good.

lol Thrawn... That IS the best Coruscaunt level I have ever seen, I've been waiting for anything that was even close to that, I just wish it was for JK or JO because I don't have DF.

This is my boomstick! It's a twelve gauge double barreled Remington, S-Mart's top-of-the-line. You can find this in the sporting goods department. That's right this sweet baby was made in Grand Rapids Michigan. Retails for about $109.95. It's got a walnut stock, cobalt blue steel and a hair trigger. That's right. Shop Smart. Shop S-mart.

Wow, I certainly wasn't expecting such an enthusiastic repsonse! For those who are wondering, DF is still alive and well, and there are plenty of great new missions available <plug> just visit www.DF-21.net </plug>

And for those who want to see more I did make a small trailer for the level. Be warned, I used my webcam to make it, as I couldn't find any screen capture software that worked with dos based applications.
The picture quality leaves a bit to be desired, but hopefully it'll give you more of an idea of how the level looks.

Well, it looks a lot better than a LOT of the JK SP levels around, sans the pixelated stormy [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

Do you get to run rampant with concussion rifles, destroying at a whim? Please?

Concussion rifles, no (they make things too easy), but there will be some lovely new weapons.

She's far too busty to be removed. You could make a small room filled with insanely large-chested women as an easter egg. "Coruscant Brothel"... this is the kind of thing I think of while at work. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

Thanks for all your nice comments. I reckon the reason certain DF custom levels look better than a lot of JK sp levels is that DF editors don't have a multiplayer aspect to distract them. As well as this I find JK to be a very ugly looking game. The models are very angular, and I really don't like the textures.

A common problem. At DF-21 we get about 1 new member a week asking for help with that very problem. I presume you're running Windows XP. Anyway, you can try reading this:
http://www.df-21.net/articles/install.html
There's a paragraph explaining how to get sound working on XP. It worked for me.

**** .... just... **** ...

I have more respect for you right now than you can imagine. Anyone who can make something look THAT good in an archaic engine deserves a major award. It looks like it came straight OUT of the movies, just jaggier and more pixelated [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif].

SOTD, most definatly.

I just wish someone would make something like that for Outcast.

I must point out that I cannot take all the credit for this work. Matt Hallaron is helping me, or rather I'm helping him. He comes up with most of the textures, ideas etc. I just build them into a level.
Anyway I would recommend taht all of you who own DF play The Dark Tide parts I and II. I did not build them (I only cam on board for IV) but they are simply factastic DF levels that put most JK and JO levels to shame.

THAT'S AMAZIN'!
Now, I wonder... How many people with programming skills will consider making an all automatic DF to JK/MotS/JO converter just to keep the people with only these games happy?

The ships in the second shot are a scrolling, transparent texture, in fact they're taken directly from JO.

The other Dark Tide levels can be found at www.thedarktide.com and www.df-21.net

Jed has a DF->JK/MotS level converter with it already. It's under file/import/DF Lev or something like that.

I have to say this, that looks much better than many of the levels for JK that are out right now, I'll have to find my DF disc for these levels. Great work!!

You can't do that because you don't need to own JO to play DF, so you'll have to make your own, or just ask someone to do a good artist's impression of it. You just can't use the JO files in any way, not even by modifying it a bit. (Sorry for bringing bad news)

But that said it does look EXCELLENT. I never played DF but I can imagine that if I did I'd be scrambling for my CD right now.
