What IS an RPG level, anyway?
2003-10-31, 10:20 AM #1
I've been working on this "RPG" level for awhile, and I'm trying real hard to make this one very detailed and realistic city level. I'm trying to make this is the ultimate role-playing level, because I got some awesome weather cogs going on, tons of detailed textures and models (all 8-bit, mind you) and realistic city ambience sounds. To see the sun set in this tiny city block...I can't believe I made this.

I don't have it working right now, but I can change the light values when it turns night in my level. So when it's night, it is night. I need some suggestions:

1. How long would you want a day to last? 5 minutes? 10 minutes?

2. Would you want a sun sprite in the sky that would blind you if you looked at it?

3. Do you think having it all 8-bit is a wise choice?

4. Should I add a pool, like every other RPG level? [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

On to the shots...

Photorealistic brick mats, all converted by me.

The doors realistically swings open, and you notice my signs I made? [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

"Dry & Wash" laundry place. I've got my Coke and Pepsi machines back there, and a vending machine right in the corner.

Like any good RPG level, I have a huge hotel.

I don't know why I put those speed limit signs; there's no cars.

I definitely need suggestions and comments. If you have a good idea for a building, or a cool idea that would make it more interactive, please tell me!

1. How long would you want a day to last? 5 minutes? 10 minutes?

Dependes if there are stages between say and night, if there are 10 mins.

If its a on/off type of thing 5 mins.

2. Would you want a sun sprite in the sky that would blind you if you looked at it?

umm.. I'm going to say no.. but if I saw what it would be like, I might change my mind

3. Do you think having it all 8-bit is a wise choice?

Looks good to me..

4. Should I add a pool, like every other RPG level?

no, a pool would seem a bit silly to me

A pool would be good for the hotel, but the town looks too rundown for anything fancy. Also, if you were to do day/night I'd make it longer than 10 minutes, because if people were actually going to RPG then they could have a conversation that lasts half a day.

Level looks fantastic, by the way [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

[edit] Lose the wall behind the city. It makes you feel boxed in. Just make a low brick wall or something go around it and in the back and front have an entry INTO and OUT OF the town. (You wouldn't have to be able to get out) i.e invisible wall

Not bad, but the inverted brick textures look awful. Revert them to the way they were before. Bricks aren't blue with glowing mortar.

I would stick to 8-bits. For those of us who still use obsolete machines theres nothing more annoying the dling a level to find the textures are rainbows colors.

someone should write a cog for a car that you can get in and out of. Not knowing alot about cog I couldn't do it. It's probably extremely difficult but from the genius I seen at massassi.net I think someone could pull it off.

for anyone who wants a really cheap night cog that would make you lot kinda dumb you could take the sector animated light cogs and set it for ten minutes or sometthing. lol it would really suck though.

That looks awesome... buut I can tell from the shots it's drastic. :'(

I'm not sure, but is there anyways you can use a ambiant light level, and change it as time goes on? So by the time the statrs come out, it's dark and it's not as noticable when it changes.

And, I suggest you add "transition" mats for the skies... ie one mat which is 10% stars with 90% skies, then one with 20% stars 80% sky. This would look better than a sudden change.,, [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif] but it might not look good in 8-bit. :'(

For a sun.. I assume you don't have one... but if you DO happen to have one, a blinding cog would be easy. force_blind.cog shows how to use view tints (hey, maybe you can use them to make the sky red att sunset, and dark, light etc)

So those are my ideas.... and I definately want to beta this. I can't play online tho. :'( But I believe I am good at finding bugs... [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

Finally, they're making coke machines for people my height...

Everything looks great, but some of the textures seem out of place, but let's also take into consideration that buildings don't always match other buildings in real life, why should they here? Some of that might go away with lighting too.

I'd also suggest Day OR Night since thinglights suckbad, and worst of all, the light would never change at the appropriet time for RP.

I'm definetly looking FRMod with this one...

Looks very nice, although in real life people that buy a vending machine from either company need to sign a contract that states that they won't buy/sell any products from their direct rival (so either coke or pepsi depending on which you go with) within your store. ^.^ (I never liked this idea of theirs though)

But anyways, nice level, keep working on it!

The_Mega_ZZTer: I already got the light cogs working already. It works great, turning night after sunset and when the stars come out, and turns day again after sunrise. I already thought of the transition mats (it would be odd to see day sky go straight to stars), so I have a very nice sunset and sunrise mat that has a short transition between day and night.

jEDIkIRBY: Which bricks don't match? And also, the machines are a little bigger ingame. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

Thrawn42689: What? The mortar on the blue bricks aren't glowing...

Pedro T Hutt: Right you are! I'm going to fix that right now...I need complete realism. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/smile.gif]

I've decided to cut the sun. Having a yellow sprite move across the sky is kind of annoying, especially when it blinds you.

I've made the light work already, in fact, it's working in those shots. I just haven't done any lighting now. I can even change the ambience lighting, so the 3DOs will be darkened as well. It's all working great.

The only problem that is really nagging me is lag. That's why I need a lot of beta testers. To the people who already e-mailed me, please wait for me to wrap some things up. I'll send in a week or so.

Thanks for all your kind comments! It's those comments that I live on, that give me energy to finish these time-consuming levels!

I have a suggestion for the asphault textures. What you may want to do is add the speed limit on the asphault, as well as adding 'Stop' in big white letters, accompanied by a white stop line, according to any forks/turns in the road. I'd suggest stoplights too, though there is a size issue (it would be odd to see stoplights at every corner in a small town like this).

1. I suggest making it 15 minutes, pauseable, and toggleable (or wahtever) so you can make it day/night with the flip of a switch, or pause time (I'm not the best speller ever [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif])

2.Hmmmm... sure why not [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

3.I dunno.. Maybe you should make a 16-bit version just in case.

4... yes [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

I've seen it. It's no much more exciting then an elevator. I meant a car that you can steer like the civilian cars in battlefeild 1942 - Desert Combat expansion. Buy it in a gaming store near you.

Drooooooooooooooooooooooool...
Finally a good RPG for JA, there wasn't even any for JO.
To look @ some quality RPG lvls just look @ some of the JK ones.

This lvl def needs a pool.
A bar would be sweet.
A few civillian houses.
Areas for snipers.
I dont know if this is possible in JA (it was in JK) but secret areas where u can walk through a wall and go around the whole lvl.
Thats all i got.

smokemyhouse, This level IS for JK, you ca tell from the fact he's using cogs, 8bit mats and the doors in the last screenshot are JK doors [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]

Looks really nice, i love it... if you still need beta testers, lemme know, I'll be glad to help you out... and as for the day/night times...

so what if you have a conversation that last a half a day, in GTAIII and GTA:VC, you can spend thre days standing on a corner if you go and get a drink or something, so i suggest you go with the GTA timer...

each second is a minute, each minute an hour...... so a new day starts each 24 min. you could also make some sort of coggs that locks doors from a certain hour, so say you can't get into a store from 9pm to 6pm (make the doors openable from the inside tho... would't want you to be locked in a store for 10 min doing nothing... so make it that you can open the door from the inside after closing, but once they close and your outside, they can't open until 6 am.

Andy Skyfighter: That cog looks cool, but I'm using SaberMaster's weather cogs. They allow for sky changing, light changing, a sun moving across the sky, and even rain/snow/lightning. Very cool, everyone should check out SaberMaster's website, although I forget the URL at the moment...

how about a control room that someone can go into and control the effects manually if needed? That'd be great (it'd be ooc of course, so have like, signs and stuff saying: DO NOT ENTER, OOC ZONE) .

Also, a good idea would be the ability to break and enter during the night, (toggleable in the control room) where when doors are locked you can open them in a few tries, unless turned off from the control room.

Universal Music selector, music that plays throughout the whole level, toggleable in the control room.

Cupboards and fridges etc that contain food that heal a certain amount of health.

That was all just my random input.. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

I think the map looks great! an RPG for JA!! YAY!!! hmm.. that rhymed..

Anyway, For zee questions..

1. With a transition (dawn, dusk) I think 15 minutes would be really nice.. without 10 would be just fine.

2. Umm... Not a sun sprite that would BLIND me by looking at it, but I think it'd be uber to see it rise and set according to day and night

3. 8-bit looks fine for this map!

4. Umm... Hotels have pools, but this can be an exception, It's fine without a pool

Good lookin shots!! Keep goin!!! [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif] [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif] [http://forums.massassi.net/html/biggrin.gif]

I've got the lighting done for night time, and I've decided that day/night will be 10 mintues, dawn/dusk being 5 minutes. I also added posters and other minor details.

I have got all of your e-mails for the beta, but it still needs polish. I'm trying to finish it...so much work...

[Edit]: I would like to change the skyboxes. If anyone has any nice city skyboxes that's night, day, and dusk/dawn, please let me know. Please note, the city skyboxes for each time of day has to be THE SAME city background, just different in terms of time of day.
