Can be interesting... This is for the levelsource contest, and it's really really really simple. Like nothing like what I've been seeing done for the competition, and I'll probably lose horribly (hell, more than likely), but I need to get one out, and I started late...

One

Two

Its still barren, right now. I need to add more stuff, and tweak the lighting some (I'm going for that odd Sith faint purple that you saw in MotS), etc.

A little less detailed than most of your works, especially on the repetetive floor texture. It's a great design though, and a great place to start.

Like I said it's weak. For now. Give me time.

Update:

Three

Four

I need to fix a few things (notably where those crystal statues are... I'm debating ditching them because of the quite yellow crystal, although if someone were willing to texture it to more of a purple... that'd work... [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif]), and find some textures that work, and still add some more to it... but these shots are notably brighter...

Gonk, take the textures, and run them through Irfanview with the RGB -> BRG filter. That should make them purple.

I don't want them OVERTLY purple though. [http://forums.massassi.net/html/wink.gif] Personally I think what's there now is quite enough purple... as it can very easily become gaudy. You never know, I might tweak it. However some of the textures will change, notably the floor, and the big pillars... <3 zully.

Gonkish, I don't know if anyone has told you this, but you released Duel_Turbulent with only one spawn point. Anyway, I don't think I like the lava.
2004-02-15, 10:26 AM #17
My only suggestion would be to come up with a style of Sith architecture before you do anything else, and use that as a guide. A type of curve, or an architectural theme, something to give the level a distinctive feel and to give the sense that it's not just another temple.

Also, I'd only use a few textures, and even then ones that are very similar in shade and style. I think it's important that the textures and architecture be the same style, so just some generic stone might do nicely.
A desperate disease requires a dangerous remedy.

A major source of objection to a free economy is precisely that it gives people what they want instead of what a particular group thinks they ought to want. Underlying most arguments against the free market is a lack of belief in freedom itself.

Turbulent does NOT have only one spawn point... I'm staring at the map file right now... :P

Also, Sine, I'm inclined to agree. I can't, however, find textures in JA that'd work for those pillar things. The inspiration for the map was largely a combination of Yavin 4 and the Sith Academy/Tombs in KotOR. I'm finding it difficult to make it distinctive, however. Any ideas?

I don't know, doesn't ydnar have some decent generic stone? Maybe you could interlace some of it with glowing strands or something. Sharp, angular shapes might make it look more aggressive.

hehe. Anyone ever find it ironic that the Jedi are based out of an ancient Sith temple in the EU?

As for the map, shot 3 looks pretty damned amazing as it is... but shot 4.... well..... it needs a little work.

Keep it up!

If you want it to look even more Sith-like, use the latter MotS levels for some ideas. If I recall they had a crypt. Maybe some hollowed out niches in the walls, lined with sarcophagi(sp?) would give some good ambiance.

Come to think of it, the MotS levels were also filled with stone carvings, sort of like Hieroglyphics I think you might need some more emphasis on ornate, swirling murals. I don't know what sort of textures the game has, but the level definately needs even more characteristics (textures, archi, lighting) distinctive to the Sith.

Excellent work though!

Yeah he directed me to a few of them..

Another problem is trying to find "oooo evil" sith-y music. None of the music in JA is really...evil... its Star Wars all right, but its not really... evil enough. KotOR had it down in SPADES but for obvious reasons I can't be using that (copyrights are FUN). [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif]

Use the RotJ music. Massassi is the most anal of all file places, and even the staff has told me they accept music, especially if it's Star Wars. Star Wars music is distributed all the time in fan films, and even George Lucas judeged those himself. It may not be legal, but damn, no one really cares.

Sadly, i havn't played Kotor, so i can't comment on themes from that game (*ducks from random objects thrown from all directions).

For music though, there was SOME good stuff out of the EP1:TPM soundtrack. the ultimate edition has the best selection (speaking of which, does anyone know if there was ever an Ultimate edition released for EP2?). But one theme i could really see in that map (or rather "hear") is "Tarawa" from Snow Falling on Cedars (the theme from the Matrix Revolutions trailers).

The Dynamic glow is on in these. Apparently it finally works correctly with the Catalyst 4.2s from ATI... Anyways... a few things will change yet. Zul is out of town or something, so I'll have to wait a bit. However, the new floor texture is admittedly quite "clean".. I'm gonna see if zully can get me a version that's dirtied up a bit more... missing tiles and such. Also, the rise to the sarcophagus will hopefully have a darker variant of the tiles or an entirely different (and darker) texture to distinguish it from the larger floor...

I can tone down the light being cast by the shader... however the brightness is primarily due to the glow... and to lessen that would require me to darken the texture in general.. which I really don't know how to do. :P
