Levels to be forgotten...or remembered?
2004-09-04, 9:15 AM #1
Hey guys, I hope some of you still know me, as I went in the IRC today and people seemed clueless  But I am DBF_SuperSaiyan aka Dark__Knight and I was wondering if anyone would like to test my WIP Level Pack for Jedi Knight. I was thinking about releasing the pack and having people pick their favorite two, and those two would be completed and released. I know this has no pictures but I figured this was more of a showcase than a discussion. So if anyone would like to test my levels with me, go ahead and let me know. There will be about 7-8 levels in the pack and I'm open to test at any time. Please, if your reason for not playing is because JK is not installed, just Install it, it only takes about 45 seconds. Thanks in advance :D

I'm counting on Flexy and GoY since you two helped me out alot when I was a beginner :D

Well I really do not feel like doing all of that, if I did, then I'd release them all, so I'll breifly describe them.

1) BGV (Battleground Volcano) You may recall the pictures on massassi a long long time ago. Basically it's your average BGJ modification but with a whole lot more stuff. It has lava flowing, and the ship is destroyed and rusted with vines hanging down from the ceiling.

2) Imperial Galactic Stadium - This level never had screenshots to the public and was never talked about. I did however have very many helpers and beta testers. Basically this is a GIANT Role-Playing map. The architecture isn't exactly stunning, but then again most of the giant RP maps are not for JK. However, if this was chosen as one of the top two, I would redo the archi for it and make it better.

3) Cargo Freighter - This level was also never talked about or shown to the public, but once again had many many testers. The level first started out as a DM level and gradually transformed into a RP map when I bought KOTOR. I basically made a giant Cargo Freighter type ship with a control pannel in the bridge that showed pictures of four planets: Hoth, Tatooine, Dantooine, and (i can't remember the last one but I beleive endor) I had Hoth completed but I ran into some HOM issues and scrapped it. I lost part 75% of the Hoth area and the 25% is still remaining. If this level was chosen I would make all the planets able to travel to and I would re-do hoth.

4) Bridge CTF - This level was shown to the public a long time ago. This level was in my opinion going to be very cool if done right. The players start out in a lobby type of deal where they can choose what side they would like to be on, or if they would like to be a spectator and sit in a transparent box above the battle and watch. Basically this map was contructed very linear and simple. There were two cliffs with a pit of lava in the middle with gigantic rock spikes and formations comming up out of it. Above the lava pit was a very thin wood rope bridge hanging above it, where you would have to travel across from one side to the other to retreive the enemy's flag and take it back to your base. I ran into some CTF cog problems and quit. Obviously if this map was chosen I would fix the CTF system and some other minor issues.

5) Dark Abyss - In my opinion, I liked this map alot. However, some said it was too dark, and a bit too simple. I thought this would be a good map for Team Sabers FF, but I don't know. Personally, in my opinion, this map is already complete, but there were alot of gripes about it so I decided to not release it. If this map was picked to release, I would have to see what would make it more enjoyable.

6) Cliffside - Really this map was just an experimentation with Hellcat's terrain painter. I basically just used that and then added water, it produced a pretty cool looking canyon/cliff type deal. It was also kinda fun to explore down below and just look at the random rock formations. I don't know what I'd really do with this map...so..yeah..

7) Aeris's Church - I am a huge FF7 fan and have always wanted to do a map like this. Really this church was in my Imperial Galactic Stadium map, but then I started getting a lot of HOM errors since it was so big. Instead I scrapped the idea of the church in that map and decided to make it into it's own level. This map is really neat in my opinion, and has the original music from the FF7 Church. If anyone wanted this map released I'd do it just because. Sugguestions are definatly welcome for that map.

Alright well that's basically all of the descriptions, I hope that may have enticed some of you to beta them. Thanks.

If you do want to beta test them, then please send me an IM on aim (my name is SaberClash1337) or MSN which is (Dark_Knight_1337@yahoo.com) Or come in the IRC (I am DBF_SuperSaiyan)

Thanks everyone :)

Alright, they have all been tested. So now, I will release the WIP pack. Here is how it will work. Massassians and such will download and play the levels, and then decide which two they like the best. Those two will then be taken by me and fixed up and finished. Also, I would like for there to be comments on the two you choose. Those two will be the ones to be finished, so I'll need some pointers and tips to get me going.

You can download the WIP pack Here.

If you would like you can also make additional comments on maps other than the two you selected and I may decide to do more than just two. Thanks everyone in advance.

All the maps are great. But my two favorites are Imperial Galactic Stadium, and CargoFrieghtor. Stadium is good, it just needs to be completed, and Cargo is really awsome but it just needs the planets to be added. You should also release Dark Abyss. Battleground Volcano need's just a little bit of touch ups and you should release it. Finally you are releasing those awsome maps!

I really don't see what's so great about these levels... lighting is bad, texturing/alignment is terrible, archi isn't the greatest, dont' get me wrong it's great for a beginner, but don't over-praise people...
2004-09-06, 12:24 PM #32
They are all WIP levels, I never do my lighting until the very end, thus, 95% of the levels have no lighting.

The whole point of this was so 2 levels could be picked and those 2 would be finalized in archi, texturing, lighting, and overall gaming experience.

After playing them all, I must say that they've all got a good start, but few of them are worth finishing.

The Empire Stadium
A lot of it felt really empty. I mean, what exactly do we need a repare shop for? I didn't... REPARE any droids, just... 'helped' them to the ground. The ship models were really cool though, especially the speeder, and the YT's.

Cargo Ship
Yeah, maybe it's interesting, but is there any GAMEPLAY here? None that I can see. Oh, and the last planet, I remember from testing, was Dagobah.

Lavathinger
Uh... BGJ... yeah?

Church
I'll be blunt: Not even test level worthy. No archi what-so-ever. Just beams, and 3DOs.

Cliffside
A cool experiment, nothing else. Looks REALLY good, though. If you could start more on this level, maybe a base in the side of the cliff, or something like that, it could really turn out nice.

Abysse
No. Unless you add lighting along the blue strips, just no.

Bridge
Er, maybe. I doubt it, though. I think that unless the bridge were thicker, it wouldn't really be all that fun for gameplay.

In the end, I say you finish the Cargo Freighter, but put some more ships in the bay. As well, really put a lot of RPG elements into the map. Sniping positions in Tatoine, etc.

Cliffside could also BECOME something, but it isn't there just yet.

Errors:

Lots of phazing of 3DOs. The center shelf of the rack 3do is unreachable.

Ya the of the areas, of some lvls are a bit boxy.

If not any thing esle, I suggest that you dull(cleave) some up those conors. Its not the best way to deal with boxyness, but it lessenes the unnatural sharpenes of a square rooms..(or atleast I think so)
