Canyon Oasis remake for HL2
2005-02-20, 10:34 PM #1
Im working on a remake of the classic mp map from DF2 for Half Life 2. Ive kept the layout pretty much the same but there are some major changes due to some of the restrictions of the physics engine in Source. Such as the water tunnel leading up to the conc rifle. Connecting water brushes cant be at two different levels (water seeks its own level) so for that part I just put in an elevator shaft that came out pretty cool. Just check out some of the screens if your interested.

Might want to port this to a non-geo[expletive deleted]ties site.

I'm sure many massassians would be willing to host this, especially considering the content.

My first thought was: "God no, not a CO map for HL2."
But then I looked at the screenshots and I saw that you actually put quite some effort in it to make it fresh and unique and quality-wise fit to the year 2005. Good job.

it's certainly a more organic approach to CO. it looks like it could have actually been a level in HL2 single player, but everyone would have hated valve for copying Jk, heh. i really like it, great job.

Best CO ever.
VTEC just kicked in, yo!
2005-02-21, 9:29 AM #16
The only thing that bothers me are the supports to that dirt "bridge" thing.

This looks wonderful, but I still don't get it. It doesn't really look anything like CO - I've been trying to look for similarities now forever?

Yeah I don't see too many similarities either. Looks cool though.

The only shot that I think clearly makes this look like CO is shown below with a comparison shot from JK.
This level is apparently framed similarly to the original CO, though not necessarily to scale, but has been spiffed up with other features. Good job :)
May the mass times acceleration be with you.

You guys obviously aren't familiar enough with CO - it has all of the same important features as Canyon Oasis, it just has a theme and looks more realistic (except the dirt bridge).

You've made my day... no, life. That's just freaking beautiful. God, if SotD worked, you'd have the rest of the month.

I suspect it'll be up, whenever someone with ftp access and script knowledge feels like it. :(

Interesting. The map design is gorgeous, but I feel that this is a very liberal attempt at a recreation of CO. The trees, water tower, and power lines in the background detract from the semblance to the original idea of a desolate canyon.
2005-02-21, 5:50 PM #30
Yeah ill try to fix up the dirt bridge in next beta ( have no idea how im going to do that now). The trees and power lines in the background do take away from it being a desolate place but, trust me, it looks alot better then nothing being there. In the first beta there was only grass up by the water part but I added it to the bottom of the canyon cause without it the textures seemed to repetative and made it very bland. Basicly it started out me trying to make Canyon Oasis map brush for brush and then I decided like 30 mins in to it, what the hell, lets spice it up a bit. :D
Like I said in my first post, "Ive kept the layout pretty much the same but there are some major changes" Thanks for the feedback guys, you been a lot more responsive and helpful then the people at the HL2 mapping sites.
2005-02-21, 5:54 PM #31
Maybe the trees need to go, hehe. Ill try it out and see what that does
2005-02-21, 6:53 PM #32
That's because they don't look at a map twice. They just respond: "OMG KEWL!!!!!1111111oneone" and that's that. We actually care, especially when dealing with the JK legacy.

That's what I love about Massassians. On average they are intelligent (although somewhat opinionated) characters that aren't just about to let one slip them by withought them having a say in it.

Just curious, what weapon is in the place where the Concussion rifle was? I bet it is cool to rocket people to death up there.

actually, one thing i dont like. the metal walkway needs supports. other than that, superb.
2005-02-21, 7:33 PM #36
The original Oasis didn't have supports ;)
Think while it's still legal.
2005-02-21, 7:56 PM #37
yeah it did...
Moo.
2005-02-21, 8:07 PM #38
Yep, nice stone columns in the original. And yeah, it looks kinda odd without the supports, like you'd expect it to suddenly just collapse... Hmm, that'd be interesting if it'd actually do that though. Looks nice. At first I'm like... that's supposed to be Canyon Oasis? Took a few shots through before I could figure out what things were.

Well, you're right in that the picture Darth Slaw posted doesn't have any. However that pic is not correct - I have no idea why the pillars that support the walkway aren't appearing. They are present in JK.

the orignal was also insanely nonrealistic in other ways, too. it seems he's going for realism here, and that would be a way to add to it. and... yeah there are supports in CO.
