I had a random urge to make a rebel trooper thurday afternoon... started thursday, continued through all of yesterday, and I hope to pretty much finish today.

Please note this is rendered in Joke, which does not "blur" the textures as JK does... this is why the blast visor thing has jagged edges on top.

Good job. Though the hands could have more color variation.

Thanks :)

For right now those hands are only temporary, which is why they aren't really textured. He'll get better ones as soon as I make 'em. (better, as in, not straight and stiff)

Also, the head has a screwed up texture job -- all the textures around the head are all of kyle's face (this is why there's a lip on his jawbone :p)

Forgot to mention all that before...

I have to ask, the under-shirt texture is REALLY well done, did you do it?

Yeah.. sorta... and to be honest, that's actually his sleeve texture :)

And by "sorta", I mean I took an LEC texture and played with the colors.

Is this better, Acharjay? (he might be a little pale atm, but tell me if this skin tone is better)

 How is it REALLY well done at all? No offense, the model is good and all, but what are you talking about? That texture seems very average to me, if not below average.

The face is too young, give him a beard or something. And make his skin darker still.

I disagree. I think most of the Rebel troopers were pretty young looking, being fresh recruits, and I certainly don't recall tons of bearded troopers in ANH when they have the firefight with the Stormies in the Tantive IV. I could be wrong though. Plus the beard would look funny with the chin strap.

That is called 'filtering' and your 3d hardware does it, not JK.

Also, he looks chunky, his helmet is too wide, and there are already perfectly good rebel troopers in MotS.

So I take it I ought to make the top a little less jagged... even though you won't often get close enough to see it

Define "chunky"... he doesn't look chunky to me
Also, this is for JK, not MotS. There's also perfectly good stormtroopers in BOTH games... why did shred bother making a new one?

I'll use them for additional faces... not all rebel troopers look the same ya know ;)
The reason I initially used ruthven was to return the same favor he did for me in the SG project :)

Slaw,

The model looks top-notch and the textures are certainly decent, although they could perhaps be better. It is very hard to tell at the moment though, I don't suppose you could give us an in-game shot could you? That would rock. :D

In-game shots ahoy!

this is a "level" I made for the purposes of testing an ally cog requested in the cog forum. Also note I messed up when I exported the ai model... I didn't set the hand to be the parent node of the weapon -- hence, guns glued to their legs  On the upside, they did learn that new force energy-bolt-out-of-hands power ;)

I like it, but I can't stand the face. Kyle's looked much more appropriate for it in my opinion.
2005-05-29, 6:55 PM #31
I've already got mots, but thanks :)

I guess I'll work on another face then... I think kyle's probably worked better because it was more aggressive looking or something like that. Rebel troops, I wouldn't think, would be as passive in battle as they appear here... tell ruthy to scowl ;)

I don't know, I think the face is fine. Personally though, don't destroy you progress - keep the current face and make 3 or so more. You could have a black rebel, a tanned rebel, a rebel with a beard, etc. This is the Rebellion, their troops "hail from all walks of life" to quote the MotS Instruction Manual, so it would make sense to have plenty of diversity.

Also, if you rewatch ANH, I think you'll see that the troopers aboard Tantive IV have very fair skin - they weren't exactly out in the scorching sand dunes of Tatooine, they were in space on a crystal-white starship. It would make sense for them to be pale. But those are just my 2 cents. :)

As for the in-game shots, absolutely gorgeouss, this model is even better than I expected. It looks really beautiful in-game. THe AI cog would add a nice touch as well. Touche, Slaw! :D

No, I'd say replace the face. It just doesn't fit the model. As for the model itself, I personally say it could use a good bit of work. It's too cylindrical, tubular. It doesn't feel organic, and doesn't seem to carry the appropriate shape or weight it should for the human form underneath. Essentially, just too cylindrical. Oh, and now that I look at it, the face mat, shows that the head is kind of oddly shaped. I think if you fix the shape of the head a bit, the face and all that will look a lot better.

My main problem is that the head looks a little too small for the body. The body looks like someone kind of...not really fat, but large, while the head is that of a youngish trooper. I'd say, older face, slightly larger head.

Other then that, awesome!
2005-05-30, 3:18 PM #35
If the head is too small, you can blame LEC ;)
Every mesh of my model is the same size as LEC's (so I wouldn't have to redo all those keys)

Actually, I think maybe the vest in that one in-game shot (from behind the player, 3rd person) may be making the torso look larger than it is... if that's the case, I'll see if I can "tighten" it a bit [edit] yeah, seems it is kinda puffy...

Sniperwolf, it's not very organic because the clothes are rather loose-fitted... somewhat baggy pants for example. Rebel troopers don't wear spandex after all :)

since we're on the topic, I was thinking about making the boots taller... they look too small right now... should I raise them?

For all the above statements, see this set of screenshots.

As for the head shape... hmm... yeah, that could use a few adjustments, couldn't it?

Why do the ears seem like they're too high on the model, even though the comparison shows they're not?
[edit] agh! I didn't mean to cut off the back of the head

Also, ruthven modified the face for me...

nice work. now the face doesn't match the skin tone though
2005-06-01, 11:50 AM #37
It seems like a bad idea to use real people for JK skins. It always looks off somehow, everything else however looks amazing.
Think while it's still legal.
2005-06-01, 12:27 PM #38
It's looking great!

What do you mean "using real people looks off somehow?" Are you forgetting how goofy the LEC rebel looks? Its face is like twice the size of Katarn's.

I made a high-poly head of me once and put it on Jerec's body (was too lazy to finish it). Now that looks off! o_O

Needless to say, Slaw's skill far surpasses mine. If anything, his model looks perfect, especially when compared to a novice attempt like mine. His has 3D ears and a body! Now that's impressive.

I still think the shape of the head looks off. From the front anyways. That might be fixable by moving the strap. And I disagree on the arms/legs. Even if the clothing is loose, it should keep decently to the shape of what's underneath. Unless they're wearing multiple fluffy winter coats or something, the limbs shouldn't be that round.
