He has a point here. A mod is quite something different from a free game. To use a mod, you have to own the game the mod is for, AND bring along enough knowledge to install/activate the mod. This limits the potential userbase to the serious gamers.
A free Matrix game on the other hand could be installed by anyone smart enough to install generic windows software. It could grow to a hype.
So, there are two possible problems:
- If it will be bad, the respective copyright owner could see it as a sort of calumny (yey for online translators)
- If it will be good, the respective copyright owners could think they lost money
It could also be a chance, though, because they might buy it/you if it is really good.
