By JO I mean Joint Operations. Meet driveable vehicles and mounted guns in Jedi Knight. This is what I've been over at the cog forums trying to make work just for some FYI. ;) :p

Very cool. I'll definitely like to see it with some nice models & textures. Now, how about mounted guns ON driveable vehicles? :D

Very nice. Can't wait to see that in a Mod.

ok dont get me wrong, this is awesome and i love vehicles/turrets, but this is by no means an "innovation." both of these have existed in games for at least 5 years... sorry if i sound like an ***, but im just getting tired of people flipping out over something just because its in a really old game.. but when someone does it in a current game it's "oh.. um thats cool, i guess.."

so yeah, awesome! if you could get that minigun turret on the back of a truck.. oh man.. i can totally see mowing down legions of the undead in that.
2005-07-10, 11:25 AM #12
You've always disagreed with me, but JK is easier to edit than any of those new games. That's why we like it because JK gives us a template for our ideas, where newer games gives us an idea, and no template. When the template for JK is expanded, we're happy.

any of them? i doubt most of you have tried to edit any newer game as much as you guys still pick at Jk. of course it's easier to edit... you've been messing with it since 97.. im sure i can say that after like 6 more years of editing jedi academy because by then ill know it 400x better than any other game ive edited.

and im derailing the thread. sorry. had to get that off my back.

I'm with Kirbs, JK is the most editor-friendly game I've ever seen. There is a great level editing tool available for it (with LOTS of tutorials) and the scripting language is really easy to learn (and has very detailed references available with a lot of documented insider-knowledge and "pay-attention-to-this-caveat"s). Also the fact that you can simply put stuff into a folder and JK loads it helps a lot.
The final point is Massassi, which has still a lot of very experienced and active editors.
Most current games lack in at least one of these points.

And, descent_pilot, great stuff you are showing us here. Mind compiling a demo?

I agree in part with Cazor, I was inspired from Joint Operations mainly, but there was something awhile ago about driveable vehicles. Note, I dunno about that one, however, in this, there is no model changing of the player. And I believe JK is the easiest game to edit. Those are my beliefs.

Put a 50cal on a truck you get a technical.

This was incorperated into my bordom mod, I might be able to extrapolate it into a stand alone addition, but it will need at least one weapon cog currently. *shurgs* Well, heres a test, to find the vehicle, go to the warehouse level. Use forward/backward, slide left/right to navigate my simple weapon selection menu, then select the pistol (replaces fists at #1) to leave the menu. Go up and activate the guns or the vehicle. Press crouch or select another weapon to disengage. Note, the technical has some physics problems in that its uneffected by gravity. And a 2nd person also has some difficulting joining, if anyone could figure out why please tell me and you will be rewarded. And well, lets jsut say there are multiple problems when multiple people are in game. :o And please try not to copy too many of my ideas in here. ;)
Firearms Alpha .5 at JK Hub

Hmmm that accually sounds like fun.... but I want to get Aliens TC (yes I dare), JK Pistol Mod, and Firearms working before I do somethin else.

I tried it out, very well done.

Obviously the levels weren't up to scratch, but they weren't the main point of the mod and of course are unfinished. As for the actual mounted guns, they were quite fun, but I didn't like how the "bullet" was what looked like a giant bowcaster bolt that only appeared once for about every 10 shots of ammo. Perhaps get some better bullet spray, and ricochet could also be a nice feature.

The drivable vehicles were quite fun, but obviously rather goofy - driving down a street listening to Kyle's feet pound the concrete couldn't help but remind me of the Flintstones! :p

The vehicle was also a bit clumsy and hard to steer; didn't seem to reverse too well either. Don't get me wrong, this is brilliant progress, and I know it's only an Alpha, but there's definately a lot more that needs to happen before this will be truly "awesome". Great work thus far, I look forward to more! :)

That's really nice, JK is invincible.

A quick pulse message with the right stuff will easily do the trick to placing stationary guns on vehicles.

I have Half-Life 2 and I don't edit that. I'm just not ready to throw down 10x what the game is actually worth to be able to modify it. JK wins this round. I'm sure other people also have their own reasons

btw: I'd love to make a tank

??? I admit Visual C++ 2003 isn't free, but you can get the 2005 beta for free (although you can't legally distribute anything you make with that). There are guides to getting the HL2 code to compile under it.

I might make a few different versions of the cars with a little damage, and then a totalled version if he wants to code in damage. It won't have sectional damage, but it will slowly deteriorate.

Cazor, you fail to see the point of why people think it is great. It is obvious that these elements have been in games for the past few (I would argue against saying maybe 5 . . .) years. The innovation comes from the fact that community editors, not professional developers, have been able to construct these features through mods of very old games that wouldn't normally support something of this nature.

Of course, in a new game such UT2k4 for example, these will be "meh." Its a norm now. The fact is that Descent_pilot did it with the foundation of 1997's tech.

Though, JK is so easy to edit because the engine is relatively simple--for lack of a better word--in comparison to the modern tech. More complexity and function yields higher difficulty. You JK editors should get off the high horse that implies that JK is some sort of efficiency standard. It simply lacks features that would make its use more difficult . . . but also more rewarding and versatile.
