A Debate

Cheers, Daft.

I mean, I had thought previously that it was just your signature, but you have indeed exemplified the Massassi Rule of Thumb: “It’s not about being right, it’s about knowing that the other person’s wrong.” (It appears as though the rationale of Bob's defense was to uphold the same rule of thumb, however!)

Btw, I completely agree, Bob incorrectly abbreviated JKO and JKA. First, I agree in precedent: I never read the abbreviations JKO or JKA referring to Jedi Outcast or Jedi Academy, not on any web publication, not on the games' respective websites, not in any past conversations with my gaming buddies, may they rest in peace. Second, I agree with your breakdown of how gaming abbreviations work (e.g. making the descriptions as apt as possible). I also agree with your assessment that Bob's concept of "redundancy" is almost pathologically wrong. And a double cheers to you for lasting all twelve rounds.

HOLY CARP! I thought you had realized the website because the quote you gave from Dilbert:

Quote:
Dafty, NEVER argue with an idiot. They will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience!

Is the same quote I have in my sig on the forum I debated on (excapet for the "Dafty" bit, which is quite cute I must admit :p ). Either way, what a bizzarre coincidence!

Thankyou. As for my sig, it is my own creation, a little joke, but I really don't mean it in all seriousness. I personally rarely get into on-line debates, and I certainly try to keep them free of swearing or hate if I do. I'm a pretty compassionate person, I just had this debate because I thought it would be fun and I thought I'd make a good point! :p

Thankyou for analyzing it. The whole thing took about an hour and a half. Also, is it just me, or do you find it much easier to review your thoughts and respond to others when it's down in writing? I feel like I'm much more confortable and able when debating someone when I can quote them, and take my time in responding.

Also, since you seem to know a fair bit about debating, or at least intelligent argument, did you notice any flaws in what I was saying or things that were ambiguous? Is there anything I could have done to improve my delivery?

Thanks. :)

I'm afraid I can't offer you any piece of advice. I find if one's strategy is to take time and think before responding, thus creating a healthy buffer against emotional outbursts and the like, then many battles have already been won.

The debate really reminded me of my buddy, Spider_AL, minus a few occasional British-tinted quips he'd invent.

That was the funniest thing I've read all day. Bob seems to be a typical forum member. How sad for him.

The point was well argued, it's just too bad the moron didn't learn his lesson. Makes me wonder if normal forum types fear Massassi.

Apparently, if a paragraph is
written in a narrower space
and it is fully justified, then it
is a lot easier to read. I
honestly don't know whether
this is a hundred percent true
or not, but it would account
for newspaper columns, dont
you think?
"Whats that for?" "Thats the machine that goes 'ping'" PING!
Q. How many testers does it take to change a light bulb?
A. We just noticed the room was dark; we don't actually fix the problems.

Well, you must have recreated your account, then, since my join date beats yours by MONTHS.

I was on vacation when we switched to these forums. We used to have some really crappy ones!

Why? My post count is miniscule.

And Halucid - sorry, if I included you I'd have to include Emon.
