Good start, but I think you need to make the rock walls a bit more rocky. You are modeling the map from the foundation of JK's CO but that doesn't mean that it has to look as bland and simple.

I said earlier I plan on adding a lot of detail, I was just getting the basic map into Hammer for reference.

Eh, the sun is in... well I can't really say the actual direction, it's uh, north west of the CR room. Look at how the shadows are cast from the bridge; they're angled.

Actually, I wouldn't call the people who stick to an ancient engine, or even a rewritten ancient engine with added features an elite. A small community != an elite. I don't mean this to jab at anyone, really, but some need to wake up and smell the coffee. JK was a good engine because it was easily editable. Very easy might I add. It took little time for a newb to understand what he was doing and become good. An elite are people better than everyone.

*shrugs* Yes, an elite if we had this much skill back in 1999 lol.

Dzipt, nice water effect, keep up the good work, I'm anxious to see this map playable!

The fact that you feel the need to spend effort making your brand new map compete with a level created 8 years ago is strangely flattering :)

It's looking quite accurate to the original. If you get some new textures in there it'll look much better (we have the same plan for Sith 2, in fact, unless JKR remakes all of the levels).

People usually don't post shots of their "references", at least not when there is nothing yet to compare it to...

I'm pretty sure that the "skilled people / whole community" ratio for JK is A LOT better than for HL2, just because "the mass" is still playing HL2.

Well, as I said before (again), I was making a direct port THEN adding detail. See, then people can compare the port to the "updated" version once it reaches fruitation.

That and I posted it because I was kinda excited, being my first attempt at a level and all.

___

I've now completed the entire level as a direct 1:1 port. Now I start work on adding structural detail and texture updating. I'll post screenies as soon as I have something worth posting.

Oh good job. The team would love you for adding hype to their project... You must be anexpert on what they are doing.

Stop derailing the thread zagibu (and people like him). It's annoying.

Anyway, I love to see added detail! But I'm not sure what CO is suppose to be in the first place. A mining station?

Eh.. a "Canyon Oasis" of course! I'd imagine um, a big abandoned pool of water amidst a desolate canyon?

I figure I'll add some geometry to make it look a bit more canyon like, as well as add a lot more detail to the pool itself, since it's like some sort of aztecian wannabe stuff. More bricks and maybe an aged effect with broken chunks and weathered away spots might be nice.

JK is, for a lot of people here, the coolest game ever, a cult classic, whatever you want to call it. I play JK several days a week, I love building JK levels, and I have done so for years and years. The fact that there's still so many people digging such an old game, and editing it, simply R-O-C-K-S. It's not simple nostalgia, it's love of a good game.

Props to the Sith 2 team and everyone else still editing JK, for doing things their own way, doing the thing they want, for not caring about what the masses do.
JK Forever!! [hint] (My custom title?) [/hint]

So for all the people who keep telling us things along the lines of "it's sad to be editing such an old game" etc. etc., stop hurting our feelings and [stormie] "move along." [/stormie]

As for the showcased level: it's starting to look more and more like the original, good job on the pool.

Mmmmm, rocky stuff.
And before anyone says anything, no, that cement texture isn't staying :p

How did you do the rock walls? Whenever i try to use displacement maps on a wall like that, it goes all screwy.

There's an option to change which axis you modify under displacement mapping. So you move up/down on the z/x/y.

I'd cut around the corner so the rock looks more natural. Otherwise, looks very nice on the rock area.

Which corner? The jutting angle over the small ramp, or the far corner?
President of the Kakle Fanclub
2005-09-09, 6:00 PM #59
Both. The wall should be more curvy, it doesn't have to exactly follow the line of the original wall. It shouldn't effect the gameplay to expand that area a little and have it a bit more curvey.

2005-09-09, 9:11 PM #60
Otherwise, jutting rocks from the surface that go up, and giving the rock some depth behind it so it overlaps with some other rocks to form more of a mountain, rather than a 'wall of rock.'

I'd also throw some rubble on the ground.

It's actually quite rocky, the screenshot doesn't do it much justice; it looks pretty different ingame when you're moving around. I do plan to add rubble and a few random rocks here and there to make it more realstic and what have you.

Thanks for the input guys.

I'm 15, so I can't play HL2. :(
It does look good though. Does HL2 have better water than JKO and JKA?
2005-09-10, 8:25 AM #64
What I mean by that is that it's too even at the top, like some perfect wall of rock. Make jagged spires, and give it some layering.

Same here. And yes, HL2 has the best water I've seen in any game to date. It reflects everything, shimmers, and gets murky down deep. It's beautiful.
DO NOT WANT.
