Everything is still in early development, so it'll probably change. Just mainly running some tests.

Looks great. Expansive looking, but not so huge it looks to slow things down.

Yay!

That's awesome, just make sure to make it darker like the opening cutscene

In the second shot, I'm not sure if the top is sky or not, but if it is sky I think you should make some nice defined stars.

looks great. i like the underglow look, i think that's how i remember it being. having the light source seem to be from underneath. nice so far.

Beautiful. That's just what I wanna see when I look out there! One suggestion tho, make the buildings so high, you can barely see the tops. It IS the vertical city afterall.

That really shows off those models you made well. When you posted just the models, I wasn't overly impressed, but putting them in place really does help.

It'll also make the level feel a lot more real if you can see those landmarks across from both sides - in the original level you didn't get that, so it felt like you were just navigating through corridors. Now you can see you've come around to the other side of those landing pads when you come out of the first building.

I like. :)

Very nice work.
It really makes me wish JK supported prerendered lightmaps the way unreal does.
cause that'd be a really good application for them.

Very nice archi, I just don't like the texturing. It looks like the same old 8-bit low-res textures all over again.

This is awesome.

This + new Textures = TOO AWESOME!

I wasn't really expecting that much positive feedback. Personally, as a showcase, I'm rather disatisfied with it. However, as a first pass, I thought it was worth some input.

I did want to address a few ponts.

1.) The textures on the buildings are still the same low-res 8-bit textures. I've got some of their replacements done and some of them not. I want to keep the 8-bit versions on the buildings at least for now. The color-depth and resolution isn't all that noticable from the level...for now (it'll largely depend on what results I get back during beta testing. Developing this on my work computer is producing some slow downs for them as they are). As for the level itself, they are all new higher res and 16-bit color depth textures. Some of the textures were already at the max resolution. For those, the best I could do is remake them with 16-bit color depth and add a few more things here and there. The idea, this early on is not to stray to far from the original. I want it to feel like an enhancement and not a total recreation.

2.) If you notice in the cutscene the cantina was fairly high up in the building. Keep in mind that I'm combining the first two levels so I have to leave room for the descent as well. :) In saying that, they'll probably be adjusted again before release.

3) Stars are difficult to see in a city. ;)

If you guys have any questions about the project to get a better idea of what I'm shooting for, please feel free to ask. Thanks.

That's TOO cool! I though of that, but I didn't even dare suggest it. Awesome!!!!!

Yes, yes, yes, but the thrill about Nar Shaddaa is that sensation of looking down and seeing stars UNDER you. ;) :D

So, pretty pretty please with strawberries and cream on top! :p

Does this level have a project page on the hub?

Stars under you?

No, it doesn't have a project page yet. I do have a thread on the forum with some extra details about the project.

That looks really cool, keep it up. So is this a remake of the original SP level? gonna be MP? Maybe 2nd level (thats really the only other NarS level i think)?

I love how you have that really basic poly'ed civilian man there. Ought to be smashing with Shred18's works

Nice, very atmospheric. It seems to be going in the direction of Dark Forces' interpretation of Nar Shaddaa (which completely kicked the **** out of JO's and JK's attempts).
2006-03-14, 10:58 PM #29
The buildings all kind of look the same height. Is that how it was in the cutscene?
2006-03-14, 11:43 PM #30
depending on how far the level extends, i might suggest adding extra levels that you can't access (just for eyecandy)

take some liberties with the whole "vertical city" theme. when you look down, you should see a city, not just open space. again, depending on the limitations, maybe go with a coruscant-esque look with ships and speeders flying around, or at the very least catwalks and the like with civilians shuffling back and forth

small details like that can really make a level feel alive, and not just a confined, linear path (even if it is)
Moo.

Well yeah, the buildings reach so incredibly high into the atmosphere of the moon that you can see stars 'under' you. Know what I mean? Well anyway, most Nar levels show stars I think, also 'under' the city.

I think that has to do with bad design and technical limitations moreso than with explicit intention.

That doesn't make any sense. Nar Shaddaa is a moon, right, not just a collection of some floating buildings? So how could you ever see stars through the surface of the moon? Or are you really going to say it's buildings are so high to include complete solar systems?

You should definitly be able to see something below. So high up that the lights on the buildings and vehicles down there look like stars? Nar Shadaa is supposed to rival Coruscant, Byss, and in the KOTOR era, Taris in it's city-ness. Buildings miles high. If you've read the x-wing series, then you know that Coruscant doesn't even really have a 'street level'. You get down far enough, and the buildings are just abandoned. There are palisades suspended between buildings that act like 'streets' in our sense. (Though, considering the vong got it, none of that matters.) Everyone middle class or higher lives at the very top. Nar Shadaa should be the same way; only even more exageratted.
Wikissassi sucks.

Let's just say that, looking down won't be a very reassuring sensation. ;)

More exterior decorations...

This random bar is in the middle of Nar Shaddaa? Did you WATCH the opening cutscene?

you already know that I think the exterior is awesome, but the interior is ugly... and the textures, overall, are silly.

I'm sorry. Perhaps you should consult the bartender with your concerns. Just remember he keeps a blaster under the counter so I'd try to avoid upsetting him. ;)

Translation:
Read above. I want this to be an enhancement and not something that was completely overhauled. I want there to be enough of the old to bring out the nostalgia of playing the original. I'm sorry if you disagree, but that is the design choice I made.

I'm working a double tonight, so that means more time to work on the level. :D

I'm sure to get more irritiable as the night progresses so I'll probably post very little in responds to any comments. I'll limit my end of the discussion to any new screenshots I post until I've had at least 6 hours of sleep. :o
