Hey folks, I'm currently designing this website :

http://www.anvil-studios.com

Which will go up at anvil-studios.com in the upcoming days. Its a work an progress and only the front page is there. Basically I was going for a clean look. The large gray box will be replaced by a flash video introduction with the website's logo.

Most people on the team like the clean white look of it, but I'd welcome any modification suggestions!

Note : I've been making use of CSS much more than ever before. It still isn't a full CSS site, I don't have time to learn that just yet.

I dislike the black bars. Maybe make them dark gray, so they don't hit your face that hard. The rest looks pretty good, though, ways better than I could do.

They are dark gray :p

They were lighter actually before, but on any light screen like my viewsonic flatscreen at home, it looks to bland. Either way, I'll see if I can find a middle ground!

I disagree. The bars are the perfect color now, because any lighter would wash the whole thing out making it, as you said, bland. The only problem I have is that the site is NOT IN ENLISH!

Actually, thats just the header logo for all pages

The logo in its full glory will be featured in that video header

It wont be the same logo though. The header is actually just the text as you would see it in trailer intros, while the video will have the actually logo, which is more than just text.

Of course, its hard to have a final opinion on that since it's not complete yet.

Thanks for the heads up though, I'll keep it in mind once I have the video up.

I'm having trouble picking the logo I like best. I think the one with the Sans Serif text is the cleanest, while the fantasy font is what I've been using until now hnn

Thoughts?

Just added a temporary header until I complete the header flash animation. It will still look similar to that once it finishes playing.

The little icon is called a favicon. http://degraeve.com has a nice little tool here that makes a favicon for you.

Okay the logo looks ncie, but some little things bother me about it. Try to align the text on the bottom to the text at the top by adjusting the spacing btween the letters, that will make it more visually appealing.

The other thing that bothers me is the anvil shape. Maybe try adjusting the positioning of the text on the logo so it feels more evened out.

Also, I was refering to the vertical bars left and right of the site (the background). It is black, as your stylesheet tells me:

Looks nice. My only real gripe is that you see the same head twice. Once in the menu and once in the header.

I love the design, and the first logo. One thing: If your site is going to have members, like you can sign up for an account, the title "Members" might be good, but if that link is to a section with like the members of Anvil Studios then you might want to make it "Team" or something.

Could it have been done with just CS?

Answer :

At this point, it was easier to build, and it works just fine. I did not feel like going out of my way to fully learn the CSS business when I could build what is needed with a few tables.

I also like the third logo the best, followed by the first. The second is the worst. You may try dropping the word "studios" from the logo.

on the black-ish sidebar on the right where you link to "the legionnaire" and such, i think it'd be better if you <a> linked the cells and not the individual text blocks. it seems repetitive to me that you link the two blocks of text (for example, "the legionnaire" and "every hero has a destiny...") to the same website. but this is a minor thing.

overall it's pretty good.

A CMS is a content management system. It basically provides an interface that allows you to change the website without touching it's sourcecode. It's pretty useful for news items and such.

I also like the third logo the best becuase it mixes the "old" (or olde) looking font with the modern font. Kind of a bridge between the ancient and modern.

Random idea that sprang into my head looking at the logo: take it (or leave it) for what you will. Could the anvil shape be the "A" in "ANVIL"? Maybe if you ever needed an animated logo, you could start with the A and then smash it into the anvil shape (with a large hammer of course :)). Like I said, just an idea.

I think the site itself looks good. Will the big logo (with the B&W background images) be on every page when the site is done as it is now? Seems a little overkill (and takes up a lot of space), since you have the logo up top. You mentioned it was the placeholder for a flash animation. Hopefully that will only be on the title page?!

yea it should be only on the main page.

Either way, i'm using PHP for page transitions so even if the larger logo remains on every page, the video would not play over everytime you switched pages.

Still, I will probably not have the larger logo on every page, though i need to figure out a way to spice them up. Any suggestions? You could take the download page for example.

They seemed pretty lined up to me?

If you mean center the anvil icon with the text, it will look worste because the base will be off center, thus making the logo feel unbalanced.
