Loss of Serenity, Birth of Provenance.
2006-07-05, 4:54 PM #1
My HD failed me the other day and I lost my dear Serenity Level, which I was so proud of :(

So, I've come up with this level to hopefully make up for what you guys missed out on. It's called.... (drum roll)

PROVENANCE!

Better than Serenity. Definitely.
I had a blog. It sucked.
2006-07-05, 5:37 PM #6
It's Jedi Outcast in vertex lit mode.

1) JO textures
2) Mipmaps in the first shot are using per-pixel depth, jk uses per-surface depth
3) Light seams and 'shadow lines'.

And yet there seem to be lightmap splotches. Just a fast light compile perhaps, and not actually vertex lit mode?
Wikissassi sucks.
2006-07-05, 6:06 PM #7
1. Alot of custom textures (Some being recreations of JO textures, others being random textures I put together, like the floor textures and stuff like that.)
2. No idea what you mean by the mipmap thing.
3. Probably just the way I lit things.

But yeah, it's definatly JK :3

(PS. I need some pointers, anything I need to improve, etc. It is after all my second map. :3)

Recreations of JO textures? Those look exactly like JO textures. Even the floor. Converting to .mat format doesn't count as recreating. :P
2006-07-05, 6:17 PM #9
Nah, I seriously recreated them.

And the floor texture is customized. I made it from scratch in PSP8. :3

Someone told me I wasn't allowed to actually use the textures from JO, so I went and used them as refrence to make my own. I really like the dark black ones at the bottom of the level :3

You have no idea what you're talking about.

1. Recreated, a closer look will reveal that they are not the same at all.
2. There are no mip-maps, smartass.
3. What the hell are you talking about?

There are no lightmap splotches. That's a simple specularity effect she created with translucent surfaces and a COG.

yah its way better than serenity
i thought serenity was alright, really good for a 1st level, but not really worth screen of the day.
this on the other hand is looking really nice.
but my advice is,
it seems like a regular deathmatch level,
nothing jumps out at me except the textures, put in intricate little fun bits like say bespin has or nar shardaa. thats just what i think, others may disagree but i think it adds character to the level, soul. right now its just really sexy.

im sure you can think of something.
i can see from your level that you are very creative indeed.

For visuals, look at some of your textures: cleave what you see. I don't like flat detail textures: They're ugly and detract from a good level. In screenshots they're fine, but when you play it, it's simply ugly.

For gameplay... wow, I wish I could explain some of the things I do with gameplay. Simply try to create high-traffic choke points and cut down on low traffic large areas. Open space is what killed JO/JA MP, in my opinion. Try to think of ways to make the map "flow" by item placement and accessability of ramps and stairs and whatnot. Hallways off to the side for stairs tend to stop me from going up them because I won't be able to attack anyone from inside. Try to make every area usable in combat, and not just a transitional area between two places.

That's all I got.

how did you 'recreate' the JO textures?
2006-07-05, 11:51 PM #18
I once converted all JO textures into 256x256 mats for JK. Was kinda neat back in the day.

Looks good.

My question exactly.

Those are JO/JA textures at first glance.

Please explain this "recreation" process.

The "recreation" process probably goes something along the lines of:
  1. Look at JO texture that Bunneh likes.
  2. Analyse what's in the texture. "That's a metal grating, that's dark speckled, that's a light fixture sitting over the top, ..."
  3. Open PSP.
  4. Draw those parts from the analysis, and combine them in the same layout.

Seriously, you lot need to give people the benefit of the doubt occasionally.

As for improvements, first thing that jumped out at me was the stairs in the first shot.

I like how you have a trim down the side. However, the steps would look good "sunken" from the trim. At least, that's how I like them:
[http://www.jkhub.net/project/screens/project-240-JhM8tnsNV8_tn.jpg] [http://www.jkhub.net/project/screens/project-240-9xtbUYP5G3_tn.jpg]
All you need is an additional sector between the step sectors and the main corridor sector that is the width of the step sectors.

You can continue that along the corridors as well to get a consistent trim down the non-stairs as well.

Can't really comment on the level yet, as it's basically a one-way ticket (you can't get back from the lowest floor). Visuals are great, though.

Holy crap! I was totally sure it was an Outcast map before Emon's post. On which I thought, "Well, I've seen better." But for JK, that's awesome.

I'm not saying that she has no texture-creating abilities...but if you had abilities to make textures that are on par with Ravensoft's...wouldn't it seem more reasonable to put those abilities to creative use by making your own rather than copy off the works of a game...?

As good as it is for a second level, the lack of gameplay makes it seem like a showpiece for effects, and the architecture is decent but not good enough to be carried by the textures alone.

It's a great start though. Keep at it.

Maybe she likes the look and feel of the JO textures?

Oh, and being on par with Raven's texture artists is not much of a feat.

Indeed, the only good texture artist raven seems to have is that HFX guy (And, actually, most of the JO textures look like his work.)

Way to start off in a friendly tone.

I'll get back to you on this one; I need to find and install JO...

2. There are no mip-maps, smartass.

Look at the left-hand wall in the first shot. That is either mipmapping, or a texture that doesn't tile right.

3. What the hell are you talking about?
The line of shadow that tends to dart diagonally across rectangular surfaces when they are lit using gourad shading.

Heres a 5 - 15 minute made texture, based off regular JK.

And because I know someone will say I just took her texture from the JK level and made a JO map with it; I got the JO screen shot from http://www.lucasarts.com/products/outcast/html/default.htm
It is shot 7 in their set of 87.

So, basically, what you are saying is you recreated that JO texture I hilited, exactly, down to the smallest details?

Looks great.

I have a question though, are we going to be allowed to use your textures for our levels?

Is it really that hard to believe?

You all should drop your elitist bull****. Just because there's a new author around with impressive, nay, very impressive work, doesn't mean you need to start throwing around accusations. Is it THAT hard to believe that someone with preexisting talent could pick up JK?
