I finally snapped at my mom
2004-11-02, 5:21 PM #1
Well, 2 weeks ago I went searching for my voter's registration card only to find it had expired. So, assuming that I got another in the mail, I went to my parents to ask about it. My mom said to my stepfather "Don't let him have it because he is going to vote for Kerry." Turns out my stepfather was hiding it from my mom and he gave it to me.

Well the other night was my brother's 28th birthday and we were all seated in some restaraunt I'll never eat at again when my brother was talking about early voting. I politely asked my mom where it was I was supposed to vote. She goes "Oh I'm not telling you because you won't vote for Bush."

So I snapped.

I said something along the lines of (and get ready for lots of censoring)

"Will you shut the **** up? I am getting sick and tired of your ****ing ****. All you do is ***** at me about who I want to vote for and won't respect me because at least I am actually voting rather than doing nothing. I am sick and tired of hearing this ****. My friends give me crap about it, my coworkers, I even had a teacher insult me to my face about it. I am getting sick and ****ing tired of hearing it so shut the **** up."

She just stared at me blankly and said nothing. Not for the rest of the night and literally acted like nothing happened.
I can't think of anything to put here right now.

Well, my manager came into work today and the first thing he said to me was "Did you vote?" and I told him I was going to after work. He said "Good man. I don't care who you vote for, at least you are going out and making your choice." He is die hard Republican, I just told him how I actually chose.

I felt that neither man really deserves to be president, so as I walked into the school to vote in, I flipped a coin.

Connection Problem, yeah my mom knows that, and she doesn't care. She will when I call the police though.
I can't think of anything to put here right now.

snapping at my parents (well like you, its normally my mom) happens from time to time with me. the last few major ones, i was completely correct and my mom went insane about nothing. up until these instances, she never admitted that she was wrong, but now she'll come down and say sorry to me. and they're actually happening a lot less.

ya really need to know exactly how much to say, and when to stop and leave. looks like you did a good job. you told her the whole story and not much else, and no response is a good thing. if she were correct in this whole thing, she would have had something to say back supporting what she'd done, but she didnt, and hopefully she'll accept that.

good job.
2004-11-02, 5:29 PM #6
Dude wtf? She can't tell you who to vote for -- that's your forking choice as a US citizen! A constitutional right, damnit!

It makes you think though -- would your parents let you vote for "the other guy"?

Personally, I'm kinda glad you snapped at her (not because of, OMG I GOT 2 YeLL @ my m0m 2day w00t! I R 1337!) -- sometimes parents just don't seem to get it until you show them you're dead serious. I've been there, and I'm sure many others have also. [edit] Ohh, look, ppl above me agree. I rest my case.
May the mass times acceleration be with you.

Your both equally wrong. Maybe you more than your mom. It's not like it's going to kill you to find out where to vote on your own.

You obviously didn't deserve to vote, anyway.

actually, this pisses me off more and more i read it, stopping you from voting just because of your opinion is a ****ing ****ty extreme style of behaviour.

try and work out a way of getting away with murder, i actually feel pissed off that some people act like that.

You must have missed the part about his parents hiding his registration card from him. That's ****ed up. Telling someone off when they are 100% absolutely wrong is very satisfying

Versus what? Not voting at all? Pfft, ok dude. That kind of attitude is...no forget it I am not evening going to turn this into a political debate thread.

Actually, he's right. An uninformed voter voting on a whim is a dangerous thing.

Far more dangerous than not voting, in-fact. Instead of being in the minority that likes having decisions made for them, you're making decisions for others with no reason or rhyme. You're not even being swayed by political propiganda. You're just random. Random, anonymous voting would get us into a lot of trouble. Statistically, it's silly. It's the difference between choosing a flashlight, or a sausage when asked to go down into a cave. Do you flip a coin, or make an educated decision? Now what if this decision is for someone else?

No, you shouldn't have been allowed to vote.

Obi and Kirby need to shh. Because I got a whole bag of shh for them.

How do you know he's uninformed, anyways? Because he doesn't like either candidate?

I was speaking in more general terms Yoshi. I do disagree with Jedikirby's comment about not being allowed to vote, though.

Yeah, there's no question, you have the right to vote no matter how you decide.
2004-11-02, 6:37 PM #23
You flipped a coin? I hate you, what a waste. I had this stupid democracy. Wohoo, we can all vote yet less than 60% of us choose to. We have people flipping coins...committing voter fraud....throwing away votes. I'm going to Switzerland.

Ah. Well I agree with that--uninformed voters make me equally mad ;).

Though uninformed people in general do that to me. My mom not knowing a damn thing about the election (she said that small busineses would crumple if Kerry got elected because of what Cheney said, when really only ilke 2/3 of the amount he projected was even affected and even then, not affected as much). My sister, who is a mere 3 years younger than I, doesn't know a damn thing about it, nor cares to (in fact says she'd never vote ever because it was stupid. Today she said for some reason Kerry would put us all under Martial Law if he got elected. WTF?), and my dad, though informed, decides not to vote. It frustrates me.

Lonely--it's just that he doesn't like either candidate. I side with him. If Badnarik had a chance in hell of winning, I'd vote for him. :( (this also assuming I was of age)

Almost everyone who votes is uninformed. Do you think people look up every little thing Bush has supported or try to find out why Kerry voted against such and such? No. We vote on predetermined stereotypes and precedent or BS propganda spewed from the politicians themselves. Nobody here can say they are an informed voter unless they went through government archives looking for how Kerry voted on multiple issues and how Bush administrated his various bureacracies and whither their effectiveness went up or down. And I'm pretty sure everyone here has more of a life than that. So shut up. If he wants to flip a coin, let him. It's his god damn vote.

If you like neither canidate, don't vote. Simple as that. Wasting your vote by flipping a coin is worse than not voting at all. If 200 people did that, the election could go in a different direction. Sounds like what the majority of coins want is what the majority of americans want, eh?

But you still have no say on how someone else votes! If they want to flip a coin, that is there perogative. They can use the right to vote any way they please.

Go you. It's unbelievably bad that she'll try to prevent you from voting like that. I wonder if there'd be some kind of legal action you could take if she did.
My parents both voted Bush, and they didn't do anything to stop me from voting.

You've been having a bad relationship with your mom for a while right? I remember someone here did, it might be you.

Anyway, chronologically this doesn't make sense. If you flipped a coin as you were going into the voting place, how did your mom know about it beforehand?

You make me stick, you're wrong. Okay? Wrong! You make an educated vote whether you are perfect or not. Guess what, NO ONE IS PERFECT; but nooo nooo flipping a coin is not the way to choose. Your just as bright as a coin though, one that's rusted! rrarrr!!!!

Tis true. he has the option to throw away his vote if he so wishes, and that's entirely his perogative. I personally think its wrong, but he still has every right to do it.

But that's just it, he's voting for our FUTURE PRESIDENT. The reason we vote is to get the majorities opinion! It's NOT a chance thing. It SHOULDN'T be split 50/50 odds. There SHOULD be a winner. Technically, if we all flipped coins, they'd be 50 for 50, statistically. But because coins ARE chance, we can't rely on that factor. We're NOT giving the canidates real numbers than. We're giving them LESS than informed votes. We're giving them votes decided by chance, rather than misinformation, beliefs, or spite!

Most of us here at least try and get the facts--that's what I call an informed voter. Most people, I will agree, only believe what they see on the news (my mom for instance). But I'd say most of us here are informed voters.

Kirby needs to quit while he's ahead...or rather behind. Yeah.

Actually, it lands heads more times than tails. But it doesn't matter--everyone's not flipping a coin. But if they did, that's their right, and personally, with this election, I see no wrong in it.

Yoshi: HOW CAN YOU SAY THAT!? Good god! The sheer unamerican of this is shocking. We can go and attack a couple countries, hang flags in our windows, write annoying patriotic country songs, yet when it comes to voting, we can flip a coin? No. That's the most unpatriotic thing ever. That's the most anti-american thing ever. That's almost as bad as being a terrorist. Yes, I'm making that profound of a statement: You're wasting a vote. NOT voting isn't wasting a vote, it's simply allowing those who actually care about our country decide who is president. Voting when you don't care is showing that you DON'T have any best interest for America.
