Oh dear me the prettiness is HURTING MY EYES!!

That first picture...****ing ****! ****ing ****!
A desperate disease requires a dangerous remedy.

A major source of objection to a free economy is precisely that it gives people what they want instead of what a particular group thinks they ought to want. Underlying most arguments against the free market is a lack of belief in freedom itself.

This game has the best intro of all time. Utterly compelling. Who are the combine? What are they doing? What's going on? You get tantalising clues for the first hour, but no real answers. Everything seems off. What's up with Dr. Bleen? From the moment you enter the interrogation room that appeared at the end of the (2003? 2004?) E3 trailer, things heat up. The dialogue is utterly well written, and acted.

Later, the combat starts. It's great. Ducking and weaving, shooting exploding barrels.

And then...

You enter a sewer.

A really long sewer.

And now I'm stuck. I'm not sure if it's a jumping puzzle, a stacking puzzle, or what. But it's annoying.

Dammit, I want more plot!

Just at the part now where I'm meeting the guy with like 4 head craps on him.

AMAZING GAME.
Story, graphics, gameplay.
Played it for about 4 hours now, taking a break going to try to get in a little nap before morning class, got a busy day today.

Yea, the intro was cool.

Why is Sean Connery in the third pic?
2004-11-16, 4:53 AM #18
My girlfriend was talking to me while I was playing through the intro and I never heard a damn word of what she said. I can't get over how the story grips you right from the beginning. This game beats the pants off of Doom 3. That's right. I WENT THERE. :o

D***! I'm still sturggling to get a 9800XT ($200 off Ebay, if I can snag the auction) so I'll be able to play the thing nicely when I buy it. I'm having trouble controlling this drooling, which wasn't happening when I was anticipating that super-quadruple-chocolate muffin I just had for breakfast...

I'm about to kill somebody. Seriously. Simple words cannot express what I am feeling right now. I did not get up at 7AM, drive in rush hour traffic, and pay $80 to get told that I can't play my game yet. If they don't fix this **** soon, I'm gonna be really, really, really pissed.

Man, listening to you guys and looking at those screens...I feel a sort of Christmas-morning excitement I haven't experienced for a decade. As soon as exams are over, I'm tearing over to EB: thank you all!

Blast, too bad my computer has nowhere near the power to run this game. Just got finished playing Half Life through again from the start too...
Life is beautiful.

OMG OMG OMG OMG!!!!

*Explodes*
2004-11-16, 8:08 AM #30
Hmmm... I really don't want to spend so much money, but after reading about all this excitement I am certainly tempted. Is it worth it?
2004-11-16, 8:28 AM #31
you guys its not that much money in terms of a quaility comp that will do more then just run hl2... you can build a sweet kickass comp on Newegg for 800 or lower and have plenty of oomph to run hl2... don't buy retail!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OMG WTF DIE!

Of course it's worth it. HL got 50+ Game of the Year Awards. The sequel looks worthy of the same celebration.
2004-11-16, 8:44 AM #33
My machine doesn;t have the power to run at anything like Jim's pics, but hell, if the story is as good as you guys are saying i can stand to play it with bad graphics until i get my new comp. 72% right now.

Good lord, now I'm really satisfied that I chose for the ATI Radeon, and manage to get this game so soon for free. The way that the storyline is, indeed, incredibly good, and the little incidents near the start already brought me right into the game. That little thing at the end at Dr. Kleiner's lab was just awesome, that really put me straight in the middle of things.

Currently going through the Water Canal m'self, and I understand that I'm getting close to the end of the sewers. Up to now, I really have to say that I love the boat scene, there are quite a few OOOOHs and AAAAAHs in there that I'm not gonna mention more about, don't wanna spoil it. Can't wait to reach the lab, and find out more as to what is going on.

However, the game continues to crash every 40 minutes or so which is the only thing that's aggravating me so far. Other than that, the game is amazing, and I'm definately looking forward to how things will develop. If Doom 3 was a horror movie, then Half Life 2 is a particularly good ol' action movie.
The answer is maybe.
2004-11-16, 9:03 AM #37
If HL2 was meat, I'd require a bigger knife.
Hey, Blue? I'm loving the things you do. From the very first time, the fight you fight for will always be mine.

Hey yall, I'm stuck already. I'm at the part where you enter a big sewer room, and right as you enter there must be 30+ explosive barrels just laying around, and some manhacks coming at you. That's where I'm stuck. I can't figure out what to do.

Well, apparently my preload did exactly what I thought it was doing: nothing. And I've got to wait 700 minutes to download it because the bogged-down servers are going so slow. Joy. Seems like no HL2 for me until Thursday.
