FF7 just seemed overtly cliche to me.

Boy is outcast. Boy meets mentor. Boy and mentor go rebel. Boy is 'badass' (note the quote). Boy meets girl. Boy and girl go be badass rebel freedom fighters. Girl dies. Boy cries. Villain smiles...etc etc. I guess the nature of these characters didn't help much, eithere :p

FF6 wasn't like this. Chrono Trigger was somewhat like this, but took an interesting approach. Wild Arms 3 wasn't like this. KotOR wasn't like this. Need I go on?

it's the high-horse joke. I don't think I'm better than you, I'm just concerned about how you guys are all worked up over which game-boss is more badass when it's trivial at best.

Actually, I'm thinking of some other creature that's microscopic like that, and it seriously looks identical to that sprite. I'll ask my bio teacher tomorrow.
