The disadvantage is the pizza cheese grime on the DVDs

You're just asking for a riot.

Windows 9x was a joke and a travasty. It was made even worse with Windows ME. Meanwhile the average consumer did not know about Windows NT 3.51 and Windows NT 4.X. These were geared for the business world. These were much more stable than 9X. From about 1995 to 2001, Microsoft didn't seemed to care about you and gave us the 9X/ME crap. Then Windows XP came along. It used the Windows 2000 kernel and NTFS which improved stability. I'm getting no where near the amount of crashes/problems as I did with 9X. May say that WinXP is still the devil, it's way to filled with crap and "eye candy." Well, that is true. WinXP does have bloated stuff, but you can turn it off. With something called knowledge, one can change WinXP however they want. Yes, I do not like the whole activation scheme. I think it's the wrong approach. However, I do not have an alternative solution at this time.

Is this good enough?

It's unstable, mainly.
A prime example, we have 2 XP boxes and a 98 my dad uses. The 98 was on yesterday, but no one was using it. All the sudden, it crashed, and got a BSOD. No one had touched it.

I happen to like Windows 2000 but when I had Win 9x-ME I was seriously considering moving to Mac or Linux [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]. They're going back downhill with the resource wasting windows xp though [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif]. Win2k is stable, fairly efficent, and most programs work with it. Unfortunatly the one thing Windows will never have is a sexy logo [http://forums.massassi.net/html/frown.gif].

True.. but should it suck if you're not using it? [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

The thing is, people do rag on windows too much. They have to support so much hardware, so many different configurations, and since it isn't open source, they have a limited number of people working on making it compatable with all these different peices of hardware, and different configurations.

That being said, often it's a PEBKAC. (Problem Exists Between Keyboard and Chair)

True enough... look at the problem database for windows half the problems are either user error or some dumb programmer did something he wasn't supposed to do, if you use completly microsoft software, with microsoft supported hardware then you will very seldom have problems, unless you have Win ME [http://forums.massassi.net/html/tongue.gif]

I actually am pretty happy with Windows. The only problems I've ever had was with our old "family" computer. It was running '98, and at first it was fine, but after we'd had it for about 4 years it just became so unreliable that you couldn't use any applications effectively. Then I got my own computer, running XP Pro, and I haven't had any problems at all. And anikan, how can you stand Macs? I grew up using the damn things and I still stand them.

Happydud, its not that 98 is bad on your computer, its just that it has so many spyware programs running at one time that windows just cant take any more. It needs more power to the flux capacitaters to run that much spyware at one time.

One thing that bugs me is a machine that my brother got some time ago with Windows XP pre-installed. IT HAD SPYWARE PRE-INSTALLED!!!

Anyway, I currently use Windows ME, and may stay with it. It may be instable (it locks up at least daily), but I've gotten used to it. Eventually, I'll learn to "hack" it, and I'll have an über-system, that will have the flexibility and stability of Linux, and the compatability of Windows!

I have not had a blue screen of death in years. even my mum only gets them when her computer runs out of it's small amout of memory, and that is when listening to mp3's on her hard drive. If you don't screw around with the things in windows and properly set things up(and dont over-clock) you should not get a BSOD.

Aside from monopolizing and jacking up the price? Not much, at least with XP. Other versions of Windows seem to inhale great wind of a donkey.

And yet I still use Win98. :-/

98 wasn't that bad, XP's working great, I haven't tried anything else that I can compare it too.

Spyware can be a problem.
I have this friend who's computer is so full of spyware, you can't even statrt up IE without a load of pop-ups coming at once and then crashing it. I'm trying to convince him to get AdAware or something.
