What I'm saying is the the guy getting a disproportionate amount of coverage as to the importance of his position he occupies. He's not very powerful, and not too important. He more like the king/queen of England. I mean, yeah, it would be good to note that he's sick, but the news people are covering it like 9/11. It's just annoying how big a deal the media makes out of things if there's no real news on. I mean, good grief, it's excess coverage for even the president. I would hardly call news the the pope might be gong in for surgery soon breaking news. But still I don't really care that much. I never watch the news much anyway.

I really can't believe there are people that don't get this point. He's the Pope, the head of the Roman Catholic Church, which has millions of members. He's supposed to be the one the dictates Vatican policy. He's an immensely important person to those millions. Of course the papers are going to be reporting the situation bit by bit.

The rest of the world got pretty damn sick of 9/11 all over the news too.

1/1000 you say?

That's around 6 million people. Which is about the size of an NYC burrough.

Sorry sir, but you lose that bet. Way more than 6 million people care about what condition the pope is in.

And JG, Nubs, Spork, Avenger--you guys=rawk.

You've never been to South America or Italy. They care with a passion there.

1.07 billion, according to this.

The 1 billion number isn't off at all.

I feel like I'm beating a dead horse here, but there's a lot of media coverage on the Pope's condition because 1 billion people worldwide are concerned about him.

Slightly off topic here, but why doesn't the Pope just stand down if his condition is deteriorating as bad as it is?

WHAT ABOUT THE DHALI LAMA?!?!

I'm as anti-Papist as the next, but immigration brought a ton of Catholics to the United States, hence mucho media coverage.

Well, it is off. It should be higher because even non-catholics like me care.

Hm. Okay, I was wrong, I had no idea they had grown so big.

But is he really the most important person in their world? Shouldn't that be... Jesus?

I also suspet the number of practicing catholics is much lower than a billion.
2005-02-27, 9:32 AM #57
IRG--really, I'd say its probably around 1 in 3 people care, but that's something that can't be supported.

Vincent--Jesus isn't alive. That's the difference. And yes, the number of practicing Catholics is down from 1 billion I'm sure, but I'd still say they're almost all very concerned about the pope.

What are you trying to argue? I mean really?

The Pope is obviously a very important person to many many people. Hence, it's obviously going to be on the news. So again, what's your point?

I actually went on the internet this morning and the first bit off news was: 'The Pope waves to followers from his hospital window'.

The one thing that I don't get is people who want him replaced... due to the whole system of the vaticant that surely isn't possible...

I thought the pope was God's messenger and you could not replace him until he was dead.

(Not my belief just what i've been told, feel free to correct me.)

I'm sure there are Catholics that don't care, and I'm that negates any non-Catholics who do care.

That's because it goes without saying that the media covering everything those people get themselves into is downright annoying. Pointless to complain about.

Apparantly this pope has lived far beyond the expected lifespan of a pope (which is about 5 years), people must be getting itchy for some change by now.

But isn't the pope just the same as us all? I thought Christianity was all about treating everyone equally, why should he get news coverage when he's sneezing? I don't see that as equal. Religion is all contradictory these days. :(

A lot of people feel that way, especially when he was no longer able to travel (that happened about 3-4 years ago), but I guess he's stubborn.

Out of the 1 billion people, there are millions that either just use the religion as a label, don't go to church, only go to church on holidays, don't care about the pope, or don't even know who the pope is.

My point is that it's kind of stupid to say that over 1 billion people care about the popes condition. Another factor is how many of those 1 billion ever read USA Today. Most likley only the people in America.

That 1 billion only includes Catholics. Many other Christians care as well. The number really isn't stupid at all.

Pardon me for saying this, but there is nothing spiritual about the old man. Heck, he could be the anti-christ, and according to some recent history and search, there's seems to be proof that Revelations describes of a man who leads many and lives in a city built on or surronded by 7 hills (most likely to be Rome), and that my friend, meets the exact description of the pope. Also, why is he the pope? Did Jesus Christ come down and said to him, "You're the pope now." or did he do that to anybody? No, I don't think so. Why worship Marry? She was just a human being like me or any other in which god chose to make his son come to be in human form. So? Why do you do it? And also, did you know the cross is a Pegan symbol? That its the symbol of some Demonic god called Tao? Didn't think so, want to know why? Because you guys just trust the people who are influential on you, instead of doing your own research. Take that!
Nothing to see here, move along.

Iā€™m assuming you meant "pagan." It's quite possible for an object to have multiple symbolic meanings. So despite the glee that you seem to derive out of Christians honoring a "pagan symbol," it simply isn't true. It's like claiming that Nazis were really honoring the Native Americans when displaying the swastika (certain tribes featured a similar symbol in their artworks). And as for the nonsense about the Pope being the antichrist, give me a break. I found websites claiming that Tony Blair, George W. Bush, and Michael Jackson are also the antichrist. Also, Catholics don't worship Mary.

I'm all for "doing your own research" when it comes to religion, but for future reference: make sure your research is sound.
