Go ahead and think that, but he's not bringing into account the whole picture. It would seem to me logical to assume that x number of Catholics couldn't care less, while y number of people do who are not Catholic.
It is my opinion that x~y, as long as we're pulling stats from our various orifices, and here's why:
Given the set of Catholic people, it is logical to assume that a higher percentage of people in this set care about the pope than the set of non Catholics, because they're well... Catholic. The set of non-Catholics is much larger, but a lower percentage of the people in that set care about the pope's condition, so it's not a leap to assume that x and y are somewhat equivalent, with y being larger if I had to wager a guess.
When you take into account bloated membership numbers I'm going to guess somewhere around 1 billion people is probably pretty accurate, but to claim more is pushing it in my humble opinion.
