The dopamine/encourage line gave it all away. :) Lemme think one up...
"it is time to get a credit card to complete my financial independance" — Tibby, Aug. 2009

Needed by all though seldom given a thought,
I am created without notice, and never bought.
When the focus of attention, I am usually scorned,
But without me you'll perish, you have been forewarned.

What am I? (w00t I rock!)

I would say sex, but the "I am created without notice" doesn't really fit. The rest does though.

I don't know.

Excrement? Sperm? Just because the "scorned" part, but it seems to be created by the body. Heh, maybe not...

On an existential note: personality?
2005-03-01, 9:12 PM #87
Kinda fits, but nowhere near what I had in mind... [edit] Personality/sperm isn't it either. If this goes on much longer I'll try to give a hint. Oh and sperm contradicts the "never bought" part. ;) [/edit]

I'm not too sure "never bought" fits very well either... :D :p ;)

I would have said atoms, molecules, or some other inane thing but the "when thought of I'm scorned" doesn't make that work. Bleh.

Okay, a slight hint.

Create a list of things we all need to survive. (But be very specific!) Of those things, there is only really one I can think of that is 'scorned'. (By the media, scientific studies, etc.) Scorned might not be the exact right word, either. But let's say in large quantities it has the potential to do some harm, according to some scientific studies.

Air! (I really have no idea.... :p )

You're getting close... In fact, your answer is not wholly wrong but what I'm looking for is a specific component of air.

I thought of oxygen too.

But, oxygen is sometimes sold/bought .. and I can't imagine why it'd be an object of scorn during conversation?

(same applies for nitrogen, helium, hydrogen, etc etc)

Unless you're talking about how people scorn hydrogen bombs? Eh?

Crap, I just realized the particular commodity IS sometimes bought (but only in compressed form, because you can get as much as you want for free!). My mistake. In fact, possibly as much if not more than oxygen. My horrible mistake. (But it rhymes, so hey! ;) )

Here's my final hint: it's not an element, it's a compound... that's in the air... it's a greenhouse gas, hence the "scorn". It has other uses but you usually only ever hear about it in the context of global warming, hence the scorn. You can get as much as you want for free all the time, and without it we would die.

Carbon dioxide?
The man in black fled across the desert, and the Gunslinger followed...
2005-03-01, 10:05 PM #98
Yessir. I was just thinking about it backwards.. I was subconciously thinking that since you can get all the CO2 you want by breathing into a bag, that it's free... well, it's used in soda fountain machines, and paintball guns and stuff, so it is sometimes bought in compressed form. Again, my bad. Nightwind, take the helm.

Dammit. I'm completely not lying when I say I thought of that first, but again, couldn't wrap my mind around the scorning part (and also the being bought part).

Bah

Good one, Freelancer. Impressive. :D Alright, here it is:

Fool, prince; scourge, or star,
It will drag you down, or take you far.
Death does not even begin to end its reign,
After years gone by, only then will it wane.

2005-03-02, 1:57 PM #111
When I'm doing my job, I'm left all alone,
For fear of their safety, for it is well-known,
Stay nearby me, and get a big dose,
Stay even longer and say adios.

Shrine of the lazy, god of those who may slack,
They may go crazy, should they go with no snack.
Twisting and turning, more often than not,
I may be quick, but my products are hot.

What am I?

Another original production by yours truly. ;)
