I'm not surprised. Powell already announced last year that the U.S. would not back Taiwan, and China has been producing naval vessels three times faster than the U.S. for about two years now.

Hopefully we will not wuss out. Sometimes with the reactions I've heard from Iraq about having one soldier kill every few days, I wonder if we will be able to fight a real war again. Taiwan is our allie. We do have to honor that. If we back out of it when the going gets tough, I fear it will mark the beginning for the end for the old US. :( I really hope we don't have to fight over this, but I hope even more that we won't allow our selves to be bullied into not not supporting Taiwan.
I don't know if we're official allies of Taiwan, but we've supported them to much to back out now. Maybe this will be a chance to let us see if Condoleeza Rice is any good. A war with China is the last thing we need right now. It'd sure mess up Iraq and Afghanistan.
2005-03-08, 2:16 PM #6
Obi, we can't support another war, and the public would not support it, period. If the people of the world see this as such a huge travesty, maybe Canada or Australia will pick up the slack on any military efforts. It's time to realize that the U.S. should not and even cannot stop every bad thing from happening in the world. Furthermore, there's a reason why we always seem to be alone in our escapades. Think about that.

Part of me is pissed at the world for standing by and doing little or nothing to help, but another part of me realizes that there's a reason why they don't.

They'd better broadcast this war in HD.

Seriously, though, this is definitely not good. Just don't use nukes plzkthxbye.

if the US gets involved, nice knowing you world.

This is for domestic consumption more than anything. Who really doubts that China would use force if Taiwan declared independence? It gives the Communist government an outlet and a distraction for its people from domestic problems, and it lets China's powerful military justify the money it eats up.
A desperate disease requires a dangerous remedy.

A major source of objection to a free economy is precisely that it gives people what they want instead of what a particular group thinks they ought to want. Underlying most arguments against the free market is a lack of belief in freedom itself.

You can not support a small nation ageist a big one, and then back out when the going gets tough. Not only is it not right, but it also weakens your nation greatly. It's pretty clear cut. It would certainly hurt Afghanistan, and Iraq but I think the public would have to support it. There's not really any way to weasel out of if it. It wouldn't be preemptive.

On the other hand, game companies are running out of original idea for games. A few US vs China games would be nice. Plus you'd get a bunch of new cool weapons. Not to mention some sort of tech race. With that sort of pressure we'd have 10Ghz chips on the market in no time.
(just kidding if you were stupid enough to think I was serious)

Freelancer, what are Canada and Australia going to do? Don't get me wrong, it would be nice support, but they really don't have much of a military. I think China would probably own them pretty quick.

Oh goody, more stupid fighting over land, can't people just get along.

On the other hand, wars are good for one thing, reducing the worlds population. Don't get me wrong, I'm against war, but you have to look on the bright side.
2005-03-08, 2:59 PM #13
Yeah, but we don't have much of a population problem. China does though. Wait- do you think china is trying to goad us into a war, so we can reduce it's population for them? ;)

Riiiiiiiight. China couldn't handle anymore than 2 carrier battle groups.
2005-03-08, 3:21 PM #15
That makes zero difference if nukes start flying.

Or do you think our sweet missile shield will protect us?
2005-03-08, 3:21 PM #16
Not that the US and China would ever go to war. We're too valuable to each other.
2005-03-08, 3:35 PM #17
Sweet! It's about time we had a war.

Oh wait.

DON'T PANIC
2005-03-08, 4:25 PM #19
Meh. I honestly don't think anything will come of this. China has been threatening Taiwan, which has been its own nation in all but name, for decades. But if they get real serious, the government will threaten military involvement(Taiwan is too valuable of a trading post to lose) and economic sanctions. Those would harm China a hell of a lot more than us because they deal in commodities that we can get from anywhere else, albeit a little more expensive. China on the other hand doesn't have any big markets like America to turn to.

China is just flexing it's muscles. I couldn't imagine that they'd go to war with anyone just yet.

Also, what's considered state of the art for them is out of date and archaic for us, especially their navy. If we got involved their navy would never come close to Taiwan. A naval war with China would only be a proving grounds for our raptor jets and stealth ships(which are in the late stage of development if not already in production).

However, if we did go to war, it's always the safest to assume the enemy is better equipped, has better leadership, and has better training than us and use that fear to get every possible strategic and tactical advantage we can whither we need it or not. We don't need a repeat of the Korean War.

1,400,000,000 to 230,000,000. it's not even close. and you have to consider and expect the same kind of tactics as you saw from the japanese in wwii.
usa loses. they'd be stupid to even think about it.

Also for bolstering economies, and industrializing nations, and...you get the picture.

Evad: Those numbers are irrelevant. The Chinese still lack the capacity to handle several carrier battle groups.

Hey, maybe if we hadn't invaded a country at random for no reason, we'd have the backing and resources to resist threats!

I won't blame China.

They have a right to be concerned about their territorial integrity, and with the world's largest standing army and a growing reach, this next move seems to follow a logical progression.

Except that has nothing to do with it. China doesn't like Taiwan because that's where China's former government ran when the Communist party took over.

That seems like a pretty absurd statement. What do you mean by carrier battle groups? I don't really know you're talking about, but I'm pretty sure the largest stading army in the world can handle alot of things.

EDIT(Slight more on topic): That really sucks. The thing that sucks the most is that I have a politics essay on China due on Thursday and this happens. !@#$

Carrier battle groups consist of an aircraft carrier and a number of other ships, probably including battleships, cruisers, destroyers, etc.

Anyways, I say we stand up for Taiwan. Hell, we received foreign aid during our revolution. The very least we could do is tell China if they attack Taiwan, then we'll sanction/embargo the hell out of em.

The largest standing army in the world doesn't do you much good in the water.
