the books.

remember how the guy who gave the movie such a bad review? how he said that the movie took out all the "jokes"?

this is how i feel about the books. it comlpetely cuts out half the funniest bits from the radio series. i'm re-reading the books now, and they're just hard to get through because of this. but at least its "difinitively inaccurate". it has its own bits of gold that weren't included in the radio series(although some of it is that those were cut from the show because of time reasons.<3 original radio scripts)

perhaps the movie will be "difinitively inaccurate", but with bits of gold of its own.

thoughts? discuss.

from what ive seen (they have clips online now) of the vogon ship and the 'ego' line parts, marvin bringing them to zaphod... and others... it seems insanely good and true to the book. that guy is bull****ting us.

oh and the guy with the tiny gold legs is created by adams. he wrote the character for the movie before he died. dont worry.
2005-04-26, 3:12 PM #11
yeah, the movie is from douglas adam's original sceenplay, so it should be really good. I have my hopes up now. I jsut haev to remeber not to compare it to the books too much.

I checked a clip of the whale scene, and frankly... definite potential.
The answer is maybe.

Whale scene? Where did you see a clip of that? please oh please give. That's on the of the funniest moment in the book, me have to see.

Oh, and by the way:

That may be true, but i also know that tehre are a lot of really hilarious bits that the radio series didn't have. Such as the bit with the ship after the police at magrathea ("hey, marvin? what are you doing here?" "I went to talk to the ship" "hey, yeah? what happened?" "It committed suicide"). My friend has been reading the radio series, and i've read the books. there have been quite a few times that i've had to expain jokes to him because they weren't in the radio series. I'm sure stuff was cut from the series, but there is not a lack of funny stuff in the books, not by a long shot. And i think it will be the same with the movie. Stuff will not be tehre that was in the books and series, but It will ahev its own great moments. Like i said before, its all Adams' Stuff, so unless the directors are brain dead this should be great

the books are copyrighted a year after the original broadcasts, so i'd say the radio series came first.

some of the funniest lines from the cop bit you're talking about were cut. also arthurs short monologue after he says "i seem to be having this difficulty with my lifestyle" is completely cut from the book and replaced with "nothing i'm only joking"

Quote:
roughly paraphrased from an arthur dent quote:

Everytime i start to figure out what is my kind of music, my kind of ice cream, my kind of movies, someone comes and starts blowing up MY kind of planet and throwing me out of THEIR kind of space ship.

it makes it very difficult get a coherant picture out of anything.

another beef i have with the books is that everythings all out of order. everything in the series made some kind of progressive sense. for example in the radio series after the argument with the cops, everyone is crouching behind some kind of computer bank(actually a hyperspatial field generator) and get blown forewards through time (but not space) to Milliways.

in re-reading the book i expected this to happen but it didnt, the cops up and died. WTF? and then zaphod says hey lets grab lunch at the restaurant at the end of the universe! even MORE wtf?

and the whole scene with the vogons coming after the heart of gold to destroy arthur... where prostetnic vogon jeltz is talking to Gag Halfrunt, half of that scene is cut. AND its supposed to happen AFTER zaphod is put through the vortex, and rescue ford and arthur from prehistoric earth...and whats with frogstar B also being the planet brontital? it makes no coherant sense.

i'm sorry. i sound like a whiney ******* dont i? i should stop complaining and jsut wiat for the movie.

It makes alot of sence if you don't try to compare the two. Zaphod's an Ultra-cool guy, so of cource, if he's looking for a huge dinner, he's going to think Milliways. And they don't actually get tehre till much later anyway. If you jsut read the books, things would make alot of sence. I think the problem is you're trying to find sence between the two. don't. you have to think of them as sepeare entities. same thing with the movie. You think too much about the books or series, you're going to think it sucks. one should conentrae on how much like Adam's it is.

yeah. there's a split second clip of it falling through the sky in the internet only trailer, other than that, all we know is that they do have a voice actor for it, so we will hear his hilarious dialogue. i dont remember seeing it on imdb whether the petunias have a voice or not, though.

Ach, to add some more thoughts of mine...

When I first read some of the facts that were in the review awhile, I definately have to say that I lowered my expectations a bit. I didn't care much for the actual opinion, but I did find myself frowning a couple of times.

Still, have seeing a couple of clips, I still see that there's quite a bit of potential within the HGTTG movie. Curious to see how it'll work out.
The answer is maybe.

i really dont think so. anyone who's a fan of the books/radio series obviously can trust a movie written by adams himself. it's just edited here and there to work better in the cinema. from those clips on yahoo... it looks very very close to the book in the right places, and different in others. you have to change things to make a transition in media or it ends up not being entertaining. reading something is much different then watching it.

oh, and the theme for it is the same as the tv show. woo hoo.

I'm going with a big group of friends tomorrow to see it (about 10 people now, i think), so it should be fun. I will admit i was scared at first, 90% of the time movie to book transfers are horrendous. However, Like i said mutliple times above and cazor also said, its Adams' original screenplay to start, and it's henson's creature shop (in one of the interviews, it also mentions how there's only one scene in the movie done with green screen: the planet workshop is just too big. Except for that, all creatures and sets are real), and after viewing those clips, i think its going to be gold. But, i'll wait and see for tomorrow

P.S. from burrie's link above, the one about vogsphere is hilarious, and the whale is straight from the book (or radio, if it was in there, too)

I'm sick of people spreading lies about how it's not Adams' work, that it's going to be different and horrible. People don't realize Adams meant for the radio show, book, and movie to all be different. There have only been a very few things changed in the script, and some emphasizations made on certain parts (that really shouldn't have been made, but don't matter one way or another). Someone even told me some guy who read Adams' biography wrote it...wtf?

Just one question that I've been wondering about:

Does it cover all the books, or just the first one?

yeah, it's the exact lines from the book. along with most of everything else in those clips, if not, it's paraphrased enough to flow nicely on film but get the idea across.

and im pretty sure its just the first one, thesilentpyro.

Well I really liked it. The plot was far from entirely true to the book (yet some passages are lifted directly), but the overall style and humor of the movie felt very right. Highlights were the Infinite Improbability Drive, the atomic missiles turning into a sperm whale and a bowl of petunias, and the 'So Long and Thanks For All the Fish' melody during the end credits. The Guide extracts were also presented very humorously and effectively.

Oh, and hang around during the credits, there's a funny little extra about half way through them.

Yes, anyone who's read LotR cantell you the exact same thing.

The theme for it IS the same as the TV show.

ok kidding, the other part.

IE: Tom bambadil being cut from the first movie, helms deep (2 pages translated into a 30 minute action sequence and a finale for a movie), and sauron's mouth (one of the sequences I loved so much in the book, a masked rider with a head that looked like fire in the inside of his helmet, being torn apart by a mask with a mouth...that...well. Had teeth.)

I haven't read the hitchhikers guide books, but I probably will after this movie.
