Well I just got back from the film, and I enjoyed it immensely.

The above two pretty much nailed it.

My tactic while watching it was to not think of the books or the radio series (which is rather hard when you know what everyone is going to say, or should say, next). Think of it as a seperate entity and dump any preformed ideas you have and it's wonderful.

Besides, they got my favorite part in there...

See, that's the thing. I have no connection to the book. So I don't have any "personal" reason to want to see this but the reason I didn't say "I'm going to wait until the DVD" as opposed to what I did say (which was along the lines of "I'm thinking about waiting for the DVD") is that it is possible that I'll hear from enough people that say it's worth it. I may see it anyway. There hasn't been nothing but crap in the theaters for awhile. Not much to look forward to in the next month either. Although I seem to remember some other sci-fi movie coming out next month. Probably more crap.

Having just gotten back from the theater not too long ago...

I have to say I really loved this movie. True, it does deviate quite a bit from the plot of the book, but it's certainly in the same spirit. I don't mind about the changes, because ultimately, it's just plain fun.

The opening is, hands down, the greatest opening for any movie, ever.

Overall, this movie definitely lives up to the Hitchhiker's legacy. Now let's hope to see The Restaurant at the End of the Universe made into a movie as well.
I bet you think that's funny, don't you.
2005-04-29, 9:18 PM #55
that was an awesome interpretation of hitchhikers.

I LOVE MARVIN. seriously. freakin awesome. did anyone catch the old version of him standing in like on vogsphere?

wow. totally love this movie.
2005-04-29, 9:30 PM #56
Yeah, I saw the old Marvin standing in the que. I picked him out right away. Now did you know that the transmission from Magrathea was done by the same guy who played Arthur in the Radio and TV series?

I second the want to see Restaurant at the End of the Universe. They definately left a smallish space for a sequel.

And the dolphins in the beginning OWN.

What I liked the best, was how over the top things would get, the buildups to nothing, and the fact that they'd poke fun at themselves occasionally.

Definitely. Arthur and Ford in the air lock then getting thrown off the Vogon ship was damn hilarious.

Hehe, even though I knew it'd happen, the "Hey wait, what's that? Oh, it's nothing, we're still going to die" bit was hilarious.

Yes! That was awesome. I was expecting them to do it some more though. But yeah, me and my friends were practically the only ones there with our 'equipment'. We were still cool though :)

I just got back. I missed the credits because the people I saw it with were eager to go, but I won't be going back to the theater to watch them. I'll just get it on DVD later.

Overall, it was a fair movie. I'm disappointed that a lot of wit was cut to make way for slapstick humor. The parts the got the most laughs included the slapping hands and cheesy jokes (give me a hand Marvin). The spirit was definately there, but I feel like something was lost in translation.

The bit with Humma really didn't go anywhere. It was kind of random that they ended up there anyway (yes, I know, infinite improbability). Arthur came across as a little whiney, but it wasn't too bad. Mos Def did make an excellent Ford, I must say. Zaphod was unfortunately nerfed. He was funny before getting his head cut out, but afterwards, it was just annoying to see him acting like a brainless prat. Trillian was done well as is. Even though she is supposed to be British (read Mostly Harmless if you didn't know), I think she worked fine as presented. I loved Alan Rickman as Marvin, and I also loved the guide. Slartibartfast was perfect.

Deep Thought was a tad off. I was hoping that Lunkwill and Fook would be represented, well...not as children. And Deep Thought was supposed to be the size of a large city, and the console was supposed to be in an office building. I understand things changed, but again, something didn't feel right about it. Also, I would have loved it if the dialogue with Deep Thought were done properly. The Deep Thought dialogue in the books is some of the most clever and witty dialogue, and it is a shame that it didn't make it faithfully into the movie.

I did love the jeweled crabs though. And I thought the doors were done perfectly.

Like I said, a fair movie, nothing spectacular. I do think that there could have been many things done better, but I'll take it.

I liked it, it couldve been worse, but it wasnt.
I really like the part where Zaphod mistook Arthurs trailer as a spaceship, it just seemed to fit

Ric_Olie has it right. although i think they made everyone but arthur into idiots.

will post a longer review later, but suffice it to say that i enjoyed it enough to buy the DVD for the extras that will be included.

Great movie. I prefer the TV series, but the movie had bits that the TV didn't, and vice versa.

Heh, loved the guest appearance, too. I think we were the only ones in the cinema who got that, though. Admittedly, we were the only ones with towels too.
Hey, Blue? I'm loving the things you do. From the very first time, the fight you fight for will always be mine.
2005-04-30, 10:45 AM #67
Me and my other 3 buddies brought towels.
Then there was a group of 3 a few seats up. It was kinda cool.
One thing is I felt like the movie wasnt really finished. Something just felt off with the editing for parts. Mightve been rushed out.

A couple of my favorite moments that few other people in the theater got:
1) The jeweled scuttling crabs, especially the one leaping sideways and yelling "Wheeeeee!"
2) Zaphod introducing Ford as "Ix" to Trillian.
3) Ford muttering "Belgium!" when they were cornered by the Vogons.

Alot of people on some forum I goto whove seen it twice say its better the second time around, because your not comparing it to the book the second time.

Untrue. I've read the books three or four times all the way through, and I went with one guy who'd only read the first book once and another guy who'd never read any of the books. All three of us enjoyed it immensely.

I went the otehr day with a mixed bunch, some who read the book and some who did. Those who did read it thought it was great, myself included. those that didn't really didn't like it. That seemed to be the general consensus.

Anyway, coming from a guy who's read it several times, i loved it. I thought it could have been better at parts, and i thought the Romance with Trillian and Aurthur shouldn't have been there, but otehrwise it was great. I absolutely loved the vogons, they were just hilarious. Although i thought they were a bit more evil in the books, the movie version is, strangely, more faithful to the guide's description of "Not evil, but cold, heartless, and ruthlessly buearocratic", or something along those lines (never was good at quoting).

Also, the end of the movie with Marvin and the POV gun was hilarious. "hey, marvin. You saved us!" "Yes... Horrid, isn't it?"

if they hadn't had the romance thing in there, there'd be even less of a plot, outlaw. im glad they made something stick out more for the general audience (non-readers) to identify with. it gave them some kinda reason do to some of the things they did, other than 'fame and fortune' as zaphod put it, which prolly wouldnt have been enough to make the average movie go-er satisfied.
2005-04-30, 1:38 PM #76
It was just that in the books, there wasn't anything there. It created irony (the only two people from earth left, you'd think the whole adam and eve thing would start but, whoops, they don't like each otehr! guess not) But i see your point, too. I guess it was jsut because it made aurthur look like less then the anti-hero he was supposed to be, but really its jsut a nitpick. i still loved the movie.

there was something there with arthur and trillian, she was always casually flirting with him, but not really interested, and he was trying to impress her and failing completely. after a while i think he just gave up.

anywho, as i said before, they turned zaphod into an idiot. originally zaphod had just performed surgery on his brains, to mask the subversion of trying to find the person who was actually running the universe. THAT was his objective. they wouldnt have let him in if they scanned his brain and found that.

in the movie, he's just amazingly stupid. doing things with no motivation. annoying really.

and Ford...well i'll have more on that later.
