If you were given $100,000 for a car...
2005-05-14, 9:28 PM #1
What would you get? Make this a realistic thread... Take into concideration Auto insurance, gas prices and the fact that you probably wouldn't want to WASTE all $100,000 as soon as you got it....

For me, I would go with a Replica Lamborghini Countach. They're built onto a Pointiac Fierro, so they can be insured as a Pontiac Fierro... also, they would be good on Gas... and as you can see in the picture, no one can really tell that it's a replica ;)

Granted it wouldn't go as fast, but if the car looked like this... I wouldn't HAVE to go fast to prove ANYTHING!

http://photos9.flickr.com/13047894_08a05eb4f5.jpg?v=0

They usually go for around $30,000.. so I'd have plenty left over to pimp it out, or to save.

Unfortunately, $100,000 isn't enough to cover either of my two favourite cars: the Hummer H1 and the Moller M400, so I'd probably have to go with the Nissan Z350. I've always liked those.

That is a realistic demand. All you'd have to do is get a custom body and paintjob. I think as a car it looks cool, so no need for the special gadgets that it had in the movies (besides, I'm sure that the gadgets are actually illegal in the U.S.).

I would get a cheap *** van, then I'd give it to X to the zibit, who can make it into a pimpvan with lounge, bar and possible utility room.

Are Vipers under $100,000?

2005-05-14, 10:22 PM #14
Yes. Back around 96, a GTS was somewhere around $70k new I think, which is really the model I want, heh. Then they discontinued the GTS a few years ago.

The new SRT-10's are about $86k now.

Whoever put neon lights on not just a Batmobile, but THE Batmobile should be dragged over barbed wire and slain by the broken glass of the neon lights.

THAT'S JUST NOT RIGHT. It's one thing for the schumacher abominations...but this is THE Batmobile!

Anyhoo...I'd probably spend it on a Viper.

Since one pic can't say it all: http://images.google.com/images?q=Dodge+Viper&hl=en

Cars are liabilities, so it's definitely in my best interests to place the bulk of my money into assets that generate more $$$ over time. (I want financial independence and lots of cash NOW, not when I'm too old to enjoy it and my biggest challenge is making it to the toilet w/o pissing myself) So.....I would take the $100K and buy a economical car that gets decent gas milage (like a mid-size sedan) and dump the rest into real estate. With that money, I could buy several income-producing properties and let my tenants pay all my bills. I'll get my Porsche when I have the wealth to back it up. Most people do it a**-end backwards... they get the expensive cars and yachts first and then desperately work on getting the money to pay for them.
2005-05-14, 10:36 PM #17
Hmm... I'd love to get a Porsche Boxster, but that would wipe out all the money and not leave any for insurance etc.

Lotus Elise would be cheap enough, but wouldnt leave enough for the height-reduction surgery required for me to fit into the thing.

So probably... That Skyline posted above. Or a Mini Cooper S.

I don't understand why people are willing to invest so much $$$ into a fast car that they can't even use to it's full capacity. What the hell good is it to have all that horsepower and speed capability when you can't even use it legally on the street? (try it sometime and see what happens) Plus, those things go through a tank of petrol like you wouldn't believe... and petrol (or gas, here in the states)
isn't getting any cheaper. The only benefit you really get is a flashy car that projects good image. To me, it isn't worth all the expense when all you have is $100K.
2005-05-14, 10:43 PM #19
A little Honda. Or maybe a Volkswagon.

... What? They're cheap, and they're economical. Fancy cars are nice, but I definately don't really care to own one.

Off topic but worth posting....

A couple years ago I stepped outside to sight of a Ferrari pulling onto my street, followed closely by a Police Officer. Cop gets out, does his thing, hands the guy a ticket and drives off. This isn't the funny part. As the guy in the Ferrari was driving off, I got a look at his liscense plate.

"ARRSTME"

I practically died laughing on the spot. God do I wish I'd had a camera for that.

Or you could just, you know, buy a car.

1) look cool
2) chick magnet
3) get to the speed limit faster than anyone else
4) can justify putting a kick-arse sound system in a kick-arse car

I'd buy a good car, which works, in which I can install some cool audio setup and it has to be comfortable. Whatever that car is. However, I'm not planning to even get a driver's license, so I'd probably buy some crappy Trabant and spend the money on something else.

Messerschmitt KR 200 . Can be legally parked perpendicularly as it only has three wheels ;) Pretty economical gas-wise too. Not terribly practical for the Finnish winter, I guess.

http://www.flyandrive.com/images/bugatti/bugatti_51_02.jpg
Bugatti Type 51. Even less practical, but I WOULD KILL to have one of these (and I'm only half kidding). They can be had for under 100k, especially if its only a reconstruction that's been cobbled together from several cars. In Bugatti blue of course.

the Smart Roadster would probably a more practical choice. I've started seeing them around. Pretty neat little things.

In the end I'd probably not take something so ostentatious. Probably a neat new Peugeot 407 or 307. They're quite good looking.

"Put in in H!"

Those things are tiny. Sat in one at the Melbourne auto show, I aint a hugely tall guy (bout 6'1'', 6'2''), but sitting up straight I could quite comfortably drive the thing with my head sticking out of the sunroof.

If you're not going to spend it on a car, get out of the thread... this is a "discuss cars" thread, not "discuss retirement fund and/or property investment" thread.

I'd get a Holden VK Group 3

drop an LS1 V8 into it, pull the rear spoiler off, put HID xenon headlights on, 5% window tinting, night vision system from the Cadillac DeVille

spend the rest on engine mods and an ungodly sound system

I'd like a Viper, but realistically I'd go for something more like an Impreza, or an Elise. The DC Cobras are sex too, but too expensive... :(

I'd want something that looks fairly inconspicuous, but had real power when you needed it.

While I do adore deloreans, I'll stick with the "beautiful" car I have now...

oh yeah..... (not mine, but a good reference.. same as mine, even in color, except for hubcap design and that mine has a T-top)

I love my car... in a few months when I head off to college we'll probably have to part :( (b/c it's technically my dad's)
