Because Nintendo has me on a short leash, and so far everything they have made I have had hours and hours of fun with. I just trust them. The other systems look really good too, but Nintendo is my hubby. >.>

We're still at the Sony E3 press conference and still trying to pump out the news as quickly as possible, so forgive the brief nature of these reports.

With that said, Sony has announced the PayStation 3 in a big damn way. The latest news is that the system will ship in 2006, with no chance of wacky 2005 surprises.

Unfortunately, Sony has not pinned down a month or quarter in which the system will launch, but Microsoft's Bill Gates recently said that he will launch the Xbox 360 version of Halo 3 to combat the PS3 launch, which he indicated could be as early as the Spring of 2006.

The big excitement of this year's Sony Conference at E3 was about the new PlayStation 3, but don't let news of a new system deter you from getting psyched for the PS2 games that will be shown on the show floor (and PS1, if there happens to be an amazing PS1 game to report on this year ... Hey, it could happen.) Sony reconfirmed as part of its E3 unveiling of PS3 that the system will be backwards-compatible with PS2 and PS1 games.

There was no word in this news on whether texture smoothing might be used to improve PS2/PS1 games -- the PlayStation 2 had rudimentary filters to help run PlayStation 1 games with a cleaner look and with less loadtimes, so it is hoped that we'll see some advancements with this new monster machine on the games everybody already owns.

Look for a test of PS3's backwards compatibility a long, long time from now. In the meantime, we'll be covering all of the PS2 games (and PS1 games) that you should be buying in preparation for this new Sony console. Oh, and obviously, to play and enjoy the hell out of in the meantime...

Among one hundred billion other bits of technical information, we recently learned that the PlayStation 3 will be capable of outputting a 1080 progressive scan image.

Very few pieces of media currently support 1080 progressive scan display. For reference, Apple recently announced that it would release new movie trailers in 1080p format, provided gamers used their new Quicktime application. Additionally, a couple of movies (namely Terminator 2) support 1080p.

While a lot of televisions do not currently support the ultra high-end format, it's great to see Sony looking way into the future for its next system.

We don't know much, but Sony promises that "Grand Theft Auto Next" will be a PS3 launch title. This information comes from some people at the Sony E3 2005 press conference currently in progress, but we've yet to confirm the report with our own editors.

The consoles will rein king for a year, then the next generation of ATI and nVidia in SLI with the next AMD and Intel 64-bit CPUs will come out and stomp all over it for the next six years. Then it will start all over.

Well, I think it about time that Sony release an acceptable piece of hardware. They're been playing catch up for so long.

It surprising that MS may have to use the same argument Sony has that inferior hardware might still produce superior games.

Personally, I wish MS would postpone their current release and insure that their next hardware is the best. Nintendo? They'll do what they want no matter.

So the trend for the next consoles is going to be white, eh? I want my PS3 made out of ivory then.

Halo won worldwide easily

San Andreas beat Halo 2 in sales in the United States, primarily because San Andreas is more of an American game

The games coming out for this thing sound pretty good. The press release mentions Final Fantasy and Devil May Cry 4 (totally confirmed therefore). Metal Gear Solid 4 has been announced previously and the Konami comments in the press release suggest a PS3 release. A screenshot of a new Killzone is surfacing (dead link at this time, hopefully it'll be better than the first). It's also stated that the next GTA game will be exclusively on the PS3 (unconfirmed, mentioned on shacknews).
