Maybe the second was already in construction when the first one had been built. Either that, or they just learned how to engineer the second one faster after building a first one.

First time they built it, they didn't know how to do it. So they were experimenting for 19 years.

`Cause for the second Death Star, they hired independent contractors.

As far as Obi-Wan aging, assume he was 25 in TPM (in the book they said he was like 27 if I remember correctly), thus he is 40 by the time he goes into hiding, thus he is about 59, 60 when he comes back out of hiding. Plus he lives on a frigging desert planet.
I can't think of anything to put here right now.

I think just as our technology has progressed in 19 years, a long time ago, theirs did as well...

I also refer you to when anikan lost his hand in EP 2 and hand a mechanical hand. Luke lost his is Episode 5 and got a brand new hand...

it was still a mechanical hand noob... just looked more like a hand

It's a combination of factors. Most significantly it was supposed to be SUPER-SECRET. They were using inmates from a maximum security prison as slave labor. Additionally, the Galactic Senate still existed and the Emperor needed to keep it as quiet as possible.

The second Death Star was a known, and the Emperor had even more control by that point so he could funnel just about all of the galaxy's resources into it.
2005-05-21, 7:17 PM #16
Why was the first deathstar built with a full frame, and then the second one built all crazy like? i never understood the idea behind the deathstar in RotJ..i mean building it the way they were just seemed dumb.

OK,
Living in a sea port, I've seen single ships built one year, and then 5 like it built in the next. Once you put together the technologies to build one death star, you can use the docking bays and assembly stations, instead of having to build those first in order to build the death star. Not to mention, even if the empire was confident in their design, that doesn't mean they'd shovel all of their resources into it. I'm sure the empire didn't have enough power and control in the galaxy to just shovel all resources into an experimental and untested battle station. It had to be built slow enough so that the rest of the empire could be funded and continued.

And the second deathstar was fully operational; that's all. It was far from COMPLETE. That explains it's ramshackle design.

The Death Star was designed by the Trade Federation/Separatists, rather than the Empire itself, so it looks like that part of EU has been pretty much discounted (along with the entire idea of that installation in the black holes, it seems)

Hey, were Luke and Leia born by episode 3? (Haven't seen it yet.) Because if not, how could Vader have said he wanted Luke to have his lightsaber?

They were born at the end of the movie, and Padme dies giving birth to them.

Think about it.

You had just found out the one you loved has destroyed countless Jedi.

He has fallen to the darkside, throwing caution to the wind and ignoring his lightside teachings.

He attempted to kill you by force choking you.

If you were Padme, I dont think things would be looking up right then.

..She'd just given birth to her children! Selfishly abandoning her offspring to a future which will clearly be dominated by their now evil and insane father just does not ring true for a character who was otherwise one of the strongest and most virtuous the prequels have to offer.

I think the point was that the reason Anakin turned to the dark side was to save padme. Yet she died because he turned to the dark side.

accually thats mostly true... the first deathstar prototype had a reactor unfit for firing a superlaser with enough power to destroy an entire planet...

i think why the seperatists weren't credited for the design of the death star was because the empire didnt want word of this to get out, and when a imperial commander finally stepped forward with designs to a new core, they gave all credit to him.....

Maybe one day, out of the many days that Anakin and Obi Wan were chilling together, Anakin said "You know what, Obi Wan. If I ever get Padme pregnant and she has a son, I want him to have my lightsaber."
Perhaps he said this in a drunken stupor, hence why Obi Wan caught on so quickly to who the father was in RotS.
2005-05-22, 3:32 PM #37
Think about this though, you are being CHOKED by someone who isn't even touching you, through the Force. Maybe there is some deep down psychological damage it does too, who knows? They fixed all VISIBLE SURFACE damage when she was dying, but there might be other damage they could not fix (obviously) that caused her to die.
I can't think of anything to put here right now.
2005-05-22, 3:35 PM #38
I think it's really stupid how no one knew she was having twins. I mean, when Leia is having childen, Luke can sense both of them across the galaxy, and they aren't even his children.

Not to mention pregnant people get numerous check-ups throughout their pregnancy. She would have known if they were twins.
2005-05-22, 4:22 PM #40
Ok question about the twins:

At any point did they mention if it was a boy or girl IN THE MOVIE? And there have been cases in the past where children have been born and they don't realize there are twins until the birth. Or maybe she never had herself tested to see if it was twins, boy or girl?
I can't think of anything to put here right now.
