I tried playing the demo again, this time on my laptop, and it worked a LOT better than on my main machine... is it specifically designed to run better on ATI cards or something?

Laptop:

Athlon 64 3000+
512Mb RAM
ATI Mobility Radeon 9600 64Mb

Main:

Athlon 64 3000+
512Mb RAM
GeForce FX 5700u 256Mb

Just curious but what exactly is the speed of the AMD 64 3000+? Is it like 2.4 ghz or something?

Get a gig.

Also, the 3000+ is like 1.8ghz.

And that 9600 probably spanks the pants off that 5700. I don't think you realize how crappy the FX line of nVidia cards really were :\

To this day, i have never reached that part in Doom3 (mainly because my computer isn't powerful enough to do Doom3 justice). I remember that from a Doom3 vid that i showed Fragment last year just before Doom3's release. I remember it clearly because it freaked me out (scariest game moment ever), and it make Fragment paranoid for the rest of the evening. He was probably still looking over his shoulder on the bus-ride home :D .

I guess I'll invest in getting a GeForce 6800 and a AMD chip 3200+ then if the game runs well with those specs.

Don't judge the processors on their power in GHz, please. Also, get at least a 6800GT, that way you're guaranteed to have at least 16 pixel pipelines.

The Athlon 64 3000+ runs at 2.0Ghz.

I'll probably give it a run on my brothers machine, its similar spec although it has more memory.

interesting demo played it last night...

I had it on x2AA and x8AF and it ran reasonably smoothly, had some bad stuttering every few stages (kinda gave away the fact that there would be people round the corner...) but in between was nice and smooth, plus it looked amazing...

my specs are as follows.

P4 2.8Ghz @ 3.0ghz
1 gig RAM
6800gt ( <-- was definatly stuggling at the settings, core got upto 74 degress during gameplay which is the highest its every been...HL2 only pushes it into the mid 60's)

1.8ghz.

Also if I upgraded to a gig of RAM do you guys think it would greatly increase my performance?

That's very odd. Is the RAM PC2100, PC2700, or PC3200? I've got basically those specs except the processor (2.03ghz AMD Athlon XP Thoroughbred (around 2700-2800 speeds)) and it ran at 30-40 fps with 4xaa 16xaf on everything highest throughout the whole demo. No dips, no stuttering, etc.

TDK--processor speeds (3000+ 3200+ etc) have different core versions, and each core can run the same speed graded processor at a different actual speed (in GHz).

A gig of RAM doesn't improve performance in so much as it stops all those dips and stutterings in games (like Half-Life 2, this demo, doom 3, Far Cry, etc).

PC2100.....yep its cr*p, I did have a few things running in the background though and lets not forget that AMD's always kick Intel into touch when it comes to games...

Also I put all the settings on high and played at 1024*768 (would play higher but not option too, yet)

I'll close a few things down and give it another go and see how it plays.

[edit] yep you definatly need some good RAM for this game, seems to be whats causing the slight laggy moments with me, I had task manager in the background and it says while in use my system is using 1.2gig of RAM...yikes...[/edit]

So you know, a Barton 3000+, 400 MHz FSB is 2.1 GHz. I'm quite positive, I have one.

My 3000+ runs at 2.0 GHz, depends on the core. The venice core runs at 1.8 GHz.

Anyway, my system runs it pretty poorly, which is surprising. I just left it at whatever the default settings were...

Athlon64 3000+
1 gig PC3200
GeForce 6600GT

It's playable, but I don't imagine I'm getting more then 25fps... :gbk:
gbk is 50 probably

From CtrlAltDel-online.com

I was first exposed to F.E.A.R. at E3 this year when Brian and I were attempting to get free hot dogs. Some of you may remember me commenting about the game after I returned from L.A.

At first it struck me as just another first-person shooter, and I was pretty unimpressed. Then a Microsoft employee came over and told me to press the Ctrl key while playing, and suddenly I had a Max-Payne Bullet Time effect, which worked surprisingly well from a first-person perspective.

I played the multiplayer demo when it was released and now the single player demo. It's a really neat game with a really awful title.

It's one of those acronyms where you can tell they just chose a word they though sounded cool, and then tried to assign a meaningful word to each letter. It didn't really work in this case.

It has a multiplayer demo? Or was that just an E3 thing?

GeForce4mx440 (ouch, upgrading soon)
[/QUOTE]

If it runs at ALL, it'd be unplayable. Simply because that card has absolutely no Directx 9 support.

And Yoshi, the FX-55 and FX-57 run higher than 2.4ghz. (2.6 and 2.8 respectively. http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/ProductInformation/0,,30_118_9485_9488%5E10756,00.html )

And FullMetal: Just so you know, I would take a Geforce 4 over that GeforceFX card you have. It's just pitiful in DirectX 9. (I think there is an option ingame to force DirectX 8... if there is, turn it on. The game won't look as good, but it should run a lot better)

They're just basically factory overclocked FX-51's, so that doesn't really count as it's not AMD's normal way of doing it. Not to mention their price points cancel out pretty much all hope of most of us ever owning one.

I doubt it. My system is a AMD XP 2500+ (1.8 ghz), 1 gig of RAM, and a GeForce FX 5600XT and it ran pretty badly. When I had a GeForce 4 MX 440 a year ago, it barely ran the Demo of Sonic Adventure: Director's Cut.

Wow that was a fun game. I took the time to get it on 56k. The weapons were a little weak though. Especially when the big armored guy busts open the doors, it took a grenade and about one and a half magazines from the assault rifle to take him down. Really freaky atmosphere when the commandos are nowhere in sight. I wasted some ammo on that ladder moment :o . The particle weapon was a lot of fun. The ragdolls were really cool especially when you shoot enemies when they are jumping over some railing. I really like the gun shooting of walls particle flying around smokey debris effects. The full game should be worth it.

It was really neat how 1st person actually has the player model visible. I looked at my shadow while reloading a weapon, it seems like they eliminated having a separate 1st person model unlike like most games.

I was able to play at about 25 FPS through the game, but the thing that annoyed me was how it stuttered whenever I wanted too look around the corner of an unexplored area. AA x2, trilinear filter, about everything else except shadows, lighting, and some reflection detail maxed out. Just need to find the right settings, at first I was getting like 7 and less FPS until I realized I had AA and AF at max.

Best parts:
That hallway owned. Stop taunting you vile child! *BLIZZAM*

Kicking people in slow motion, then shooting them with a shotgun before they hit the ground, is very fun.

The graphics, weapons, and AI are all neat.

Bad parts:

The AI is also sort of predictable. They always prefer jumping or crawling. The begining fight where the guy knocks over the shelf and crawls under it happens EVERY TIME.

Only 3 weapons.

Not enough nades in the demo.
