George Bush doesn't care about black people.

Mike Myers and Kanye West are trying to raise money for the hurricane relief and at one point after Mike Myers is done speaking West just says "George Bush doesn't care about black people."...It goes kind of quiet and Myers just turns and looks at West and the camera instantly cuts to Chris Tucker who looks suprised to be on so early.

Thoughts? It seems that Katrina has really started to bring up not only the topic of disaster and how people can help but race as well and the presidents involvment in things.

No matter what the situation is or will be, political backlash will occur against the President. (Referring to past, present, or future - democrat or republican)

There are always people who will use a tragedy as a tool in their movement for political goals.

Quote:
Dear Mr. Bush:

Any idea where all our helicopters are? It's Day 5 of Hurricane Katrina and thousands remain stranded in New Orleans and need to be airlifted. Where on earth could you have misplaced all our military choppers? Do you need help finding them? I once lost my car in a Sears parking lot. Man, was that a drag.

Also, any idea where all our national guard soldiers are? We could really use them right now for the type of thing they signed up to do like helping with national disasters. How come they weren't there to begin with?

Last Thursday I was in south Florida and sat outside while the eye of Hurricane Katrina passed over my head. It was only a Category 1 then but it was pretty nasty. Eleven people died and, as of today, there were still homes without power. That night the weatherman said this storm was on its way to New Orleans. That was Thursday! Did anybody tell you? I know you didn't want to interrupt your vacation and I know how you don't like to get bad news. Plus, you had fundraisers to go to and mothers of dead soldiers to ignore and smear. You sure showed her!

I especially like how, the day after the hurricane, instead of flying to Louisiana, you flew to San Diego to party with your business peeps. Don't let people criticize you for this -- after all, the hurricane was over and what the heck could you do, put your finger in the dike?

And don't listen to those who, in the coming days, will reveal how you specifically reduced the Army Corps of Engineers' budget for New Orleans this summer for the third year in a row. You just tell them that even if you hadn't cut the money to fix those levees, there weren't going to be any Army engineers to fix them anyway because you had a much more important construction job for them -- BUILDING DEMOCRACY IN IRAQ!

On Day 3, when you finally left your vacation home, I have to say I was moved by how you had your Air Force One pilot descend from the clouds as you flew over New Orleans so you could catch a quick look of the disaster. Hey, I know you couldn't stop and grab a bullhorn and stand on some rubble and act like a commander in chief. Been there done that.

There will be those who will try to politicize this tragedy and try to use it against you. Just have your people keep pointing that out. Respond to nothing. Even those pesky scientists who predicted this would happen because the water in the Gulf of Mexico is getting hotter and hotter making a storm like this inevitable. Ignore them and all their global warming Chicken Littles. There is nothing unusual about a hurricane that was so wide it would be like having one F-4 tornado that stretched from New York to Cleveland.

No, Mr. Bush, you just stay the course. It's not your fault that 30 percent of New Orleans lives in poverty or that tens of thousands had no transportation to get out of town. C'mon, they're black! I mean, it's not like this happened to Kennebunkport. Can you imagine leaving white people on their roofs for five days? Don't make me laugh! Race has nothing -- NOTHING -- to do with this!

You hang in there, Mr. Bush. Just try to find a few of our Army helicopters and send them there. Pretend the people of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast are near Tikrit.

Yours,

Michael Moore

P.S. That annoying mother, Cindy Sheehan, is no longer at your ranch. She and dozens of other relatives of the Iraqi War dead are now driving across the country, stopping in many cities along the way. Maybe you can catch up with them before they get to DC on September 21st.

Hehe. It's true, though.

I don't buy into the idea that the relief efforts were delayed because the Bush Administration decided to ignore the plight of a city with a large African-American population. People will politicize anything to gain . . .

West may be misguided, by I don't think he is coldly calculating to further a political agenda. He's a musician, not a politician. In the video, he looks visibly shaken and is probably quite passionate about what he believes. While his comments were not appropriate, he is trying to help.

Most everyone of Michael Moore's point in that letter could so easily be reputed it's funny.

"On Day 3, when you finally left your vacation home, I have to say I was moved by how you had your Air Force One pilot descend from the clouds as you flew over New Orleans so you could catch a quick look of the disaster. Hey, I know you couldn't stop and grab a bullhorn and stand on some rubble and act like a commander in chief. Been there done that."

I love that. What is Bush gonna do, land Air Force One in New Orleans? Oh wait, it's flooded....he gonna go land in Baton Rouge and walk to New Orleans or something? Oh wait, it's flooded. If Bush was on the rubble, what is he gonna say "EVERYBODY! IM HERE! DONT WORRY!". Yeah, cuz that will solve the situation.

"That night the weatherman said this storm was on its way to New Orleans. That was Thursday! Did anybody tell you?"

The American People need the president to tell them a hurricane is coming? ITS CALLED WATCH THE F'N NEWS! GET ON THE DAMN INTERNET! WEATHER CHANNEL! For God's sake, it wouldn't of made a damn difference if Bush got on the news and said "Ladies and gentleman, a hurricane is coming".

"Respond to nothing. Even those pesky scientists who predicted this would happen because the water in the Gulf of Mexico is getting hotter and hotter making a storm like this inevitable."

So what's Bush gonna do? Pull out his hurricane stopper gun? Gonna tell everyone in New Orleans three years ago to just leave, because New Orleans is gonna get destroyed? Umm...no

Mike Myers definitely goes down in credibility for that remark, IMO. The only racism issues I see are made by people who think that just because the majority of the population down there is black that theres a race issue. And blaming Bush for this? Why blame monkey-man? He's doing what he's supposed to be doing, what more would any other president do?

Michael Moron should be easily aware that the Army isn't responsible for this sort of thing and it's FEMA's fault for not sending in the National Guard. Bush declared New Orleans and such as disaster areas before the hurricane hit, that's all he was supposed to do. FEMA's president, whom I refer to as New Orlean Bob (ala Baghdad Bob), said even yesterday they didn't know the people were in there and that they had to find out by a news source. FEMA's also been quoted to say that they didn't go in because "they didn't know what to bring."

His letter to Bush is nothing more than using this tragedy to whine and gain publicity, he's no better at this point than some journal-brat whining about these issues.

I don't think he meant that the President needed to inform the American public or attempt to stop hurricanes, instead I believe he was criticizing the sluggish federal response. There was plenty of warning before the storm for the government to prepare a response, yet it was not nearly as effective as it should have been. A few days may not seem like much to us, but it was the difference between life and death for some people in New Orleans. As mentioned in another thread, even Bush was critical of the government's response:
Bush: Katrina response unacceptable

That said, Michael Moore is indeed obnoxious and attention-grubbing.

I'm pissed that so many people are making this an issue of race.

Notice that it didn't become a racial issue until days after the incident? It's just the fact that so many people are seeing lots of black people on TV instead of white/latino/asian/whatever people that they feel there should be an issue of race. ... which is ridiculous.

It shouldn't matter if they're black or not, and those noticing that they're mostly black are most likely the ones who are seemingly making it an issue of race... essentially making themselves more...dare I say... more racist than others. If you can look at them as people, instead of a particular race, then you've got it all for you. That's what we should be doing in any situation regardless of where it is/who is involved.

It only adds to the problem, the hysteria, and the lack of help that New Orleans will get (people afraid of racial tension, afraid to help, just like people were hearing of looting and danger, some didn't go in to help out in the first days) because of a bad mentality that people generally get.

I agree, the race issues seem to more come from people that think theres an issue just because they see black people. That IMO is more racist than anything else in this situation.

The president of FEMA needs to be fired, pronto. They should've had the National Guard out there the next morning, instead only the Coast Guard was able to respond. No doubt some people have lost their lives due to the incompetence of FEMA.

You know tha National Guard isn't a standing force, right? They are regular folks who go play soldier two weekends a month and two weeks a year. In order to mobilze a National Guard unit, regular folks have to report to their base and form up. Given that those people live in the state of La, it's going to be kind of hard to do since people in La. were evacuating and fleeing from the hurricane in the first place. Once they get the Guard all reported in and formed up, they have to plan their response so they can be as efficient as possible. They need to time to load up supplies. It really is a whole lot more than just calling in the Guard.

"George Bush doesn't care about black people" is not an opinion. It is a statement of fact, one without any proof to back it up. Even if he said "I don't think George Bush cares about black people" it still wouldn't stand. He's got to say *why* he thinks that. Like, have a reason, have something to justify his opinion.
