George Bush doesn't care about black people.

Yeah, if you actually try for federal aid/other grants and scholarships, you can easily pay for a college education. There were several kids in my high school class that had everything, including books and lodging, paid for. The money's there, you just have to be motivated enough to go and get it.

What do you propose? Socialized tuition?

Yes.

Britain has a system that works well, whereby very few people pay any tuition fees at all, only the richest students pay. This means that everyone with sufficient ability can go University, regardless of income.

Most everyone of Michael Moore's point in that letter could so easily be reputed it's funny.

"On Day 3, when you finally left your vacation home, I have to say I was moved by how you had your Air Force One pilot descend from the clouds as you flew over New Orleans so you could catch a quick look of the disaster. Hey, I know you couldn't stop and grab a bullhorn and stand on some rubble and act like a commander in chief. Been there done that."

I love that. What is Bush gonna do, land Air Force One in New Orleans? Oh wait, it's flooded....he gonna go land in Baton Rouge and walk to New Orleans or something? Oh wait, it's flooded. If Bush was on the rubble, what is he gonna say "EVERYBODY! IM HERE! DONT WORRY!". Yeah, cuz that will solve the situation.

"That night the weatherman said this storm was on its way to New Orleans. That was Thursday! Did anybody tell you?"

The American People need the president to tell them a hurricane is coming? ITS CALLED WATCH THE F'N NEWS! GET ON THE DAMN INTERNET! WEATHER CHANNEL! For God's sake, it wouldn't of made a damn difference if Bush got on the news and said "Ladies and gentleman, a hurricane is coming".

"Respond to nothing. Even those pesky scientists who predicted this would happen because the water in the Gulf of Mexico is getting hotter and hotter making a storm like this inevitable."

So what's Bush gonna do? Pull out his hurricane stopper gun? Gonna tell everyone in New Orleans three years ago to just leave, because New Orleans is gonna get destroyed? Umm...no

Yeah, Michael Moore is stupid

Part of what Moore said though *does* have a point. He was commenting on how it took Bush so long to respond. Personally if he had taken out the part about that woman who's son died in Iraq and global warming, he could have had a rather funny yet serious letter. Then he had to directly insult the president by dragging in crap that had no point to the hurricane itself.

"That night the weatherman said this storm was on its way to New Orleans. That was Thursday! Did anybody tell you?"

To your response to that, again he isn't saying "OMG LIEK TELL NEW ORLEANS ITS GONNA BE DESTROY!" but more like "huh, hey Bush maybe you should have had some transportation ready to get them out"

But Michael Moore being the idiot prick he is took a letter and ruined it. By being himself.
I can't think of anything to put here right now.

Christ. Moore's letter might be addressed to the President but it's for his fans.

Perhaps Moore's weatherman guessed that the storm was headed to New Orleans on Thursday (and I'm skeptical even of that, considering Moore's propensity for altering quotes), but at that point Galveston and Houston would likely have been equally valid guesses. What's the man going to do, evacuate the entire Gulf Coast? As far as I know, the earliest we knew that the hurricane was going to make landfall at or near New Orleans was Saturday.

Fact is, even without the bits about Cindy Sheehan and global warming, and even if it were written by someone else, it wouldn't be worth taking seriously. Until there's an in-depth investigation into the response, I have no use for Michael Moore or any other armchair rescue coordinator who thinks he could have done better with the information available.

Moore's just out there to make money and to stir up political uproar. I'm sure he's probably a democrat, but if it wasn't Bush, he'd have something to say to whoever else it was. I mean, the reality is, Bush does not control every rescue helicopter, etc. AND -- this was one of the worst natural disasters ever known on US soil. It's no wonder things took a bit longer. It's hard to set up relief for millions of people, thousands of businesses and homes, as well as crops, etc.

Moore doesn't really ever say "Here's what should have been done" -- it's always "Leik OMFG the Government suxorz!" [/opinions]

Knowledge isn't a commodity or a product.
Knowledge is something everybody should have a right to obtain, if they wish to obtain it.

knowledge is also something that doesn't require school to obtain.

Perhaps not, but the purpose of school is to impart knowledge (not to churn out labourers and qualifications).

Let's put it this way: ideally, schools exist to impart knowledge. But schools are what people make it. I propose that most people go to school to get qualifications, knowledge-be-damned. I also propose that, at least in America, schools exist to make money, knowledge-imparting-be-damned.

How many people would attend the best school in existence if it didn't grant any degrees? Not many.

Until people (employers) realise that people from that super-school are very well educated, well-rounded and generally valuable individuals. Then, proof of going to that school will become the 'new' qualification. Oxford and Cambridge offer exactly the same qualifications as every other University, but employers (and people generally) value an Oxbridge qualification more because the education is better (arguably).

The purpose of the qualification is proof of knowledge. The less knowledge that is required to gain that qualification, the less valuable it becomes.

(Note, 'business' is only a tiny portion of what constitutes as 'value'. Knowledge is valuable for the sake of knowledge alone, but it can be used to benefit humanity in many other ways too. Business being just one them, but probably the easiest to represent)

Reading all these posts about college educations makes me wonder; what do you figure the statistics are regarding children of the privelleged going to prestigious schools and landing the prestigious job versus no higher than high school educated entrepeneurs that have made themselves rich. I'm not wording this well but it seems to me that most successful (read: very rich) entrepeneurs got that way by working as hard as they could at a great idea instead of school. I don't have any facts on this matter but I think it would be interesting to see.
