Serenity: The Firefly Movie (Spoilers, but in spoiler tags.)
2005-09-27, 9:05 PM #1
[Edit- Judging by the initial comments below, I reccomend NOT reading the spoilers. It's far better to see it on your own. Given that:]

Background: I got a press ticket and a guest ticket to see a preview screening of Serenity tonight (tuesday). I told them I worked for my school newspaper... heh.. and that worked. :D

Nonspoilers: Wow. It was amazing. There were a few things that I did not see coming AT ALL, others that I guessed what would happen from the previews, but was vastly mistaken, and the rest was just plain awesome.

Spoilers: oh my god oh my god oh my god. There is a scene with River... A weapon resembling an axe in one hand, and a sword in the other, fighting an onslaught of Reavers.

Yes. That's right. It's River vs. about 100 Reavers. And guess who wins? The choreography in this fight scene actually brought tears to my eyes. At one point in the begining, there's a sorta-flashback scene with Simon 'observing the River experiment.' (As he's about to break her out) A scientist says "She's very agile, limber, strong.. she's an amazing specimine." Simon says "Yes.. she always did love to dance." (And then awesome kick@55 stuff happens) But I think they factored that into the choreography. It looked almost like a dance, and yet not in a bad way. She was killing and slaughtering and rending Reavers from stem to stern, and yet she was moving in a way that was absolutely amazing.

Basic outline of the story: During a job that River is on, the plan goes south. Reavers attack. She's okay, but Simon (who objected to her being there in the first place) freaks out and punches Mal. Things happen, Simon and River leave the ship next planet.
Mal/Jayne are in a bar, doing business. (This is perhaps an hour later) River walks in and stares at an advertisement on the vidscreen, whispers "Miranda" and then goes psycho and beats up lots of people.

Getting briefer: They take her back up, but now they realize she's a weapon. They hide at Sheapard Book's abbey, and then stuff happens. They pick up Inara and meet an assassin who's trying to kill Simon and River. They go back to the Abbey, and find Book dead. Yes. Book dies. His entire abbey was slaughtered by a maurading ship.
River brings up a planet called "Miranda" on the ship's computer, which according to the database was on the very outer edge of the solar system, and the terraforming failed and it was uninhabited. River needs to go there. Unfortunately, between Serenity and Miranda is Reaver space. They take the bodies from the abbey and turn Serenity into a Reaver looking ship, by tying the bodies about the hull.

More briefer, because I'm sleepy: They make it to the planet, and discover highly advanced settlements, massive cities... and everyone is dead. They track down a homing beacon, and it turns out that they [The Alliance] were trying out something in the air to make people less prone to fighting. But instead, it made them less prone to anything at all. 99.9% of the people died because they just didn't eat, didn't sleep, didn't drink, didn't move...

The other .01% had the opposite effect. They became insane, boodthirsty, killing everything

The Alliance created the Reavers.

They take this information back to a character I skipped over, Mr. Universe, who is basically a superhacker. They realize, however, it's a trap, and that he's been captured by Feds.

So they take Serenity, make it almost out of Reaverspace.. and then catch the attention of some Reavers. And by some.. I mean a fleet. A massive fleet. I'm talking Serenity has five or six capital ships tailing her, along with countless cruisers and other things. They head into the Ion Cloud Mr. Universe lives in, and they come out to meet an Alliance blockade.

Seconds later, and moments before the Feds open fire... The Reaver ships come out of the cloud.

Massive space battle ensues.

Serenity gets through, and is trying to land. They get tailed by a Reaver ship, and crashland in a hanger. They're okay, but the ship is destroyed. One, if not both, of the engines have been torn off, the ship is near totaled. Wash recites his "I am a leaf, floating on the wind" line...

And then gets a spear through his chest and dies. The Reavers open fire on Serenity.. Wash is dead. Massive gun fight ensues, in which Kaylee gets shot by darts and is dying, Zoe gets slashed by a sword in the back, and is hurt, but okay, Jayne gets shot in the leg, and Simon gets shot in the stomach. Mal is attempting to broadcast the video proof they found of the Reavers' origins. The group is in a corridor with a blastdoor rigged to shut permanently. It jams. The only way to close it is from the other side. Simon dropped his bag on the other side of the door, so with River is the only one left standing, she says to Simon "You've taken care of me... now it's my turn."

She dives through the door, throws the bag through, slams the door shut, and then fights the Reavers.

Oh, my sweet kak, how she fights the Reavers. It brought tears to my eyes. At the end of this scene, she's standing with a sword in one hand, an axe in the other, both dripping with blood. (Blood droplets are actually sliding down the blades, and falling onto the floor.) Alliance busts in with lots of soldiers and guns, telling her she's under arrest. (Oh, she opened up the blast doors (Somehow?) before this.)

Jump back to Mal: The assassin has a much bigger part in this movie than I've mentioned so far, but it's mostly him slaughtering people, or ordering their slaughter, and him trying to track them down. He and Mal fight. Mal wins, but insted of killing him, he binds the assassin to something and makes him watch the video as it's being broadcasted to the entire system.

The movie ends with Simon and River /finally/ kissing, Inara deciding to stay on Serenity, and the ship being fixed.

I've skipped a lot of things, but that's a brief overhaul of the plot.

So people! When the movie comes out friday, may this be the official Serenity Movie thread!

People who've seen it already: What do you think? Keep any, even remote, spoilers in spoiler tags please.

And all you people who see it when it comes out, it's worth the wait, trust me.

If you're not sure if you should see it or not, go see it. Bring three friends.

Haven't seen the series? That's okay. Watch the movie. And then go find/buy the DVDs.

You Can't Stop The Signal.

PS. I got a free T-shirt and Hat while at the screening! And I was || close to singing "The Hero of Canton" infront of the entire theatre.

I hate these spoiler tags. They're so much like those stupid e-mail virus headings, you just want to click 'em. Seriously, who can resist a heading such as "Serenity: The Firefly Movie (Spoilers, but in spoiler tags.)" it's pratically "DO NOT CLICK THIS". *click*

Great movie. Go see it now. Take a friend. Hell take 10 friends. No wait, buy 10 copies of Firefly, force them all to watch it, and then take them all to see Serenity. They'll be eternally in your debt.

Just one thing...

****BIIIIIIG SPOILER****
Seriously, dont look unless you really dont like surprises in movies.

I cant beleive Wash died!!

:( :( :(

I'm gonna be upset over that for months. The other one you could see coming, but that one... Dang. Poor Zoe .

Great acting, great writing, it really did feel like a long episode of Firefly. What more could you want.

Only bad things were sound effects in space, and Simon doing his thing at the very start of the movie doesnt tie in with the first episode of Firefly, when River came out of cryo that was supposedly the first time Simon had seen her.

I'm going to go see the showing tonight in SLC, UT @ the Jordan Commons... I'm so excited, there is going to be a shindig thrown by one of the biggest fans out there afterwards I don't know if I'll be able to reply... with me being speechless and all.

Just got back from watching it, and I must say it was AWESOME. I can't believe Mr. Universe DIES!!!! oh wait.. i don't care about that!! I mean.. WASH!!

It was very good at summing up everything for those who hadn't seen the series. The only downside I saw was the fact that the people who HAVN'T seen the series won't hear about the REPUTATION of the Reavers as much... and the suspense of seeing them... The reavers won't seem as scary to them, it seems.. but oh well... VERY good movie. I hope it does VERY VERY VERY well. BLOWS episode 3 out of the water.. and you can quote me on that.

"I aim to misbehave"

It was EXTREMELY good. I was not let down at all. It does a VERY good job at explaining things for newcomers, but it doesn't even seem that evident to people who have seen the show.

Though, I DO reccomend watch the series first, not because it would make the movie easier to follow, but it will make the whole experience better. You get to know back stories, and charactor traits. You also get a good feel for their "universe". And knowing the relationships is a good thing too, cause there's quite a few references to this before they even introduce the charactors in the movie, and if you haven't watched the show, you might get a bit confused as to WTF they are talking about. Also you can hear them talking about stuff in the background that if you havn't seen the show, you won't understand. Watching the show beforehand also makes you "feel at home" on the ship & with the crew. Which really gets you in to the film.

The way I see it, The show is like the setup, and the movie is like "the punchline". Without the setup, you still have a joke, but it's not nearly as enjoyable in the end.

Wow...Amazing. Simply amazing. The only thing I didn't like is the fact that Book and Wash get knocked off. Did Whedon REALLY have to kill TWO of the original characters?! But, I guess I can probably get over it, especially if the movie does really well and we get another movie and/or ressurection of the TV show.
