That's a damn good point, quesadilla_red. Even just over the end credits would have been nice.

For the love of all that is holy, that was an amazing movie. AMAZING. I really can't express much more than that, but it was that. It was worth every penny I lost because I skipped work to watch it. Every single penny.

Wash and Book dying was a really big downer though. Book I could have dealt with, but Wash was always one of my favorite characters. At the end, where they're standing in front of the graves, some of the girls behind me were crying. I didn't, but I'll tell you, I sure didn't feel very good about it.

Most of the memorable lines in the movie are in the trailers and clips on the Serenity website, but there were a few very funny lines that had the theater at un uproar. Toward the end, when Simon and Kaylee are talking before the reavers break in, and when Kaylee asks, "You mean, like sex?" the theater laughed incredibly. Her next line I'm not sure I heard right over the noise, but if it was "Then I'll live," then it was an even better line.

In the end, very, very great movie. See it now, along with as many friends as you can take with you.

Can someone please explain to me what makes this movie good? I just got back from seeing it, and I thought it was mediocre at best. The humor was ok after I let myself be coated with a layer of thick cheese, but I had a hard time at first getting used to it. And what exactly was the plot? Why are we supposed to hate the Senate or Alliance or Galactic Whatever? Just because we hated them in Star Wars? Or because there was this black dude who had a sword?

Basically it felt like a TV show. There were way too many subplots that I didn't care about, the humor was constant and cheesy, the acting (besides maybe the captain) was really flimsy, the entire conflict of the movie was this one loser dude with a sword (oh, and a bunch of zombies?), and the motivational speech at the end ("I aim to misbehave") made me puke all over my seat.

I had heard it compared to Cowboy Bebop and went in with that expectation; and although there are some elements of space cowboyism (the music, for one, which was great), there really wasn't enough to create any real atmosphere. I was so excited when we first saw Serenity (the ship); the music and the pacing of that scene were great, and it really felt like the movie was going to be really good. But all the atmosphere seemed to die beyond that point, and it basically turned into a cheesy action movie.

My recommendation: Only see it if you really, really like Sci Fi movies.

OMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMGOMG

I was SO incredibly angry when Wash and Book died. ESPECIALLY Wash. oh goodness. ARGH!

but it was awesome. yeah.

but the thing is, it can't really be picked up by a network again, can it. or made into a trilogy like I've heard in some rumors. Well, they can technically, but I would have to kill them for doing it without Wash

sugarless, you speak so much truth.

Wash was by far the funniest character, and his relationship with Zoe was incredibly complex. Wash's one liners never, ever get old. "Let's go back to the part where Jayne gets beat up by a 90 pound girl, because that never gets old." Why Joss would get rid of him, I honestly don't know.

I read that the second movie would deal with Shepard Book's past.

I don't understand how that could work...but that's what I read.

Well, after seeing it the first time Tuesday, I knew I had to make this movie succeed.

In the span of 48 hours, I gathered 27, yes. Twenty seven people together, and sent them to the movie theatre. Fishstickz, Madquack, and a kid I met at the Episode III premier went in first and reservered an entire row, not allowing people to sit in it.

Twenty seven people. I brought friends, who brough friends, who brought friends.

It was grand, I tell you. Grand.

Saw this posted in one of the comments on Slashdot, I think it explains a bit about Whedon's plans for future movies.

From http://homepage.mac.com/merussell/iblog/B835531044/C1592678312/E20050916182427/index.html

Q. Now, let's suppose that "Serenity" finds its audience and there's a chance to make another film or, God forbid, return to television. Would it be a prequel, as I heard Chris Buchanan hint at one of the fan screenings, or would it continue the story from where we left off?

A. I would tend to continue from where I left off. That doesn't mean…. I think what Chris Buchanan was probably saying was that, you know, we would get everybody -- and I obviously don't want to get all spoiler-y --

Q. Right. I know.

A. But things that seemed irrevocable, uh, well, are -- but the movie itself already has a bit of a flashback structure, and the show had it, as well. And I think there's ways to weave in important character pieces without ruining the momentum of a sequel that would, in fact, pick up from where this left off.
I'm not a prequel buff. I don't want to see "Mal and Zoe: The Early Years" with William Katt and Tom Berenger. I mean, I do. But I'm more interested in the consequences of what has come. Because the audience has experienced it. And for me, the audience experience is the other experience -- if the people in the movie aren't going through what the audience is going through, then I'm doing something wrong. And the audience -- assuming you have a sequel -- has seen the first one. So they've lived through it. And if the characters haven't, there's a disassociation that I don't think you can ever buy back.

I saw it yesterday, without ever seeing Firefly, and thought it was damn good. Now I need to buy the DVD set.

I was upset when Wash died. Even though I only knew him from the movie, he was funny as hell, and a damn good pilot. Very sad.

what kind of crazy system is this? I'm used to the US getting films before us, but you getting it a week before is just weird...

anyway, I'm totally freaking out with excitement, and it's killing me that I can't get on IRC to talk to you guys. I'm forcing the only person I see regularly who I think will like it to watch all of Firefly with me this week and we're gonna go to the previews on Thursday. But it sucks that after massassi (read: Jaiph) got me totally hooked on the series, I can't discuss it with my fellow obsessives. Anyway, I hope you all enjoyed it and hopefully sometime in the near future I'll get a new computer and will actually be able to talk to you guys about it properly.

I went and saw it on Saturday! Frickin' wild!

Here's my opinion:

On its own, it's an awesome movie. Excellent fights, conspiracy etc.
However, when you consider the TV show... Serenity has killed Firefly. If there ever was hope of rekindling Firefly's legacy, it's gone now. And that makes me sad. Firefly just isn't Firefly without... ah... those two characters that died. I mean, it was an awesome movie, but here's what I'm talking about: On the drive to the movie, my bro and I were all psyched and we were yammering on about the movie. Right up until the commercials ended and the feature started. But on the drive home... not a word was spoken. We were both shocked. Then, this morning (two days later) my brother was putting away his Firefly DVDs and I heard him mutter "They killed ____...". It's a shame.

Btw, how do I do spoiler tags? O_o

From someone who knew nothing about the series, it was a very good movie. I wouldn't say it stood out much from other good sci-fi movies out there, but it was still excellent to say the least. The space battle was indeed breath-taking and some combat, especially with River were most excellent, albeit way too short and undetailed IMO. One girl swing weapons or fist and killing all around. Thats it.

Still, in the long run its excellent, and I'm really hoping to see this turned into a sequel. I don't exactly know how they will do it, but there are tons of possibilities where the movie leaves off.

And I must say I totally loved Mal (captain, very very han solo like) and Jainy (bad-*** dude with the love for grenades) or however you spelled them. (saw the movie in french.)

One of the serenity challenges is to put flyers up and take a picture of you doing that... so I ran around to 2 high sc hools and 3 business parking lots, not to mention some residential areas, and put up about 10-15 flyers within a 5-10 mile radius :P.

I was watching a few episodes of Firefly just recently, and I think I figured out a story arc Joss is going to take for the sequels. I'm willing to bet that what follows is what he will do. Oh, contains spoilers about the movie too.

Alright, so everyone is upset about Book's and Wash's deaths, especially Wash. I figure Joss isn't done telling either character's story. So here's what I think he's going to do.

Book's past can be handled quite elegantly through flashbacks. Not too much of a problem there. It will depend on the pacing, but I think Joss can pull it off. I'm not too worried about Book's death. However, Wash is another story.

Wash can't live on through flashbacks. He just doesn't have the right backstory. He went to flight school, served on other ships, etc. Pretty standard stuff. So Joss is going to have to find a way for him to live on.

In the episode "War Stories," we kind of discover that cloning is possible. When Zoe brings back Mal's ear and tells the crew that they'll get him back, Jayne looks at it and says, "What are we gonna do, clone him?" Even though he was being sarcastic, the way he said it implied that cloning was possible, just not an action that the crew would ever consider taking, whether it be due to expense, morality, or whatever. The reason is unimportant. The important thing is that it seems that cloning is possible. So Wash could be cloned. However, it won't happen. For one, it would be a sort of cop-out, for two it isn't Joss' style, and for three Zoe would never stand for it.

So what does that leave us with? Well, in the episode "Heart of Gold," Zoe and Wash get into a minor squabble about having a baby. Wash is against it because he doesn't want to bring a helpless person into their dangerous lives. Zoe wants to meet the child her and Wash would make.

And this folks, is what I think Joss is going to do. I think Zoe will be pregnant in the next film. The story could accomodate the possibility that Zoe got pregnant sometime before Wash died. While this will never bring Wash back, it will allow him to live on in some way. This could also be a major turning point for Zoe, changing her into a rich and deep character, possibly moreso than Mal himself. Flashbacks during Zoe's pregnancy could also occur without feeling odd, giving us a chance to experience Wash's humor again.

Again, I want to emphasize that this is only my theory, but I wouldn't be surprised if the story plays out much like this.

I'd like to point some things out:

Joss has said on several occasions that the series is done. Not by his fault, but because the contract with Fox said no more TV series for 10 years. At that point, all the actors would be too old.

So, he says, Firefly will live on in other mediums.

I'll leave the theories up to you.

My guess would be that the next movies will be heavy on flashbacks. Well, either that or he's pulling a Ressurection. But I'd bet on the former.

What? Of course he was only being sarcastic. That's Jayne. Also remember this moment (I believe it's from Objects in Space):

[SCENE]
Mal: I think she's a reader.

Wash: A psychic? (Sceptically) That's like something out of science fiction.

Zoe: We live in a spaceship, dear.

Wash: So?
[/SCENE]

As you can see, spineless sarcasm runs rampant on board Serenity. I don't think cloning is an option.

Besides, were you imagining cloning as:

a) A human-shaped mold fills with silver goo, which instantly takes on the form of Wash , or

b) They get a sample of Wash 's DNA and implant it into someone's stem cells, and grow them into a fetus?

The former isn't realistic. At all. And the latter would take many years to grow the new Wash back to his former self, by which time Zoe would be much, much older.

Plus, the new cloned version wouldn't have any of the memories of the original.

As for the pregnancy theory, I'm much more optimistic. :)
