So I'm out of cigarettes
2005-10-29, 5:52 PM #1
I usually smoke Doral Menthol 100's, but since a collection company mentioned in a different thread is trying to take my money, I had to close and re-open my checking account so they get a nice little 'account closed' notice instead of their money and me getting fee's up the wazoo.

Well, to make it short, I can't buy any ciggy's till Tuesday when the new account number has my money, so I'm smoking the Mrs' 'El Cheapo' Regular Light 100's. I cut the filter in half to make 'em stronger, and I'm wondering, is it healthy? :p

OK, yeah, I've got nothing intelligent to say.

If you smoked real cigs instead of menthols, you wouldn't need the extra drags. :p

Doesn't the filter just filter out excess tar? It's not like you're getting more nicotine or anything.

Seriously, I don't see why people smoke. It's unhealthy for you, you get taxes and taxes for 'em (probably depends on location), and it's unhealthy for people AROUND you...

I just can't fathom whatever benefits would have to outweigh that. Don't they just calm you down or relax you or something? I relax by taking care of whatever the hell it is that is annoying me. That has the added benefit of ensuring the problem doesn't remain, unlike if you ignore it and smoke instead.

Peer pressure + addiction? I can see where that would be a problem, but eventually the realization hits that smoking never really made you part of the in group like you thought it would, or the in group wasn't really that great or whatever, or you don't even see those people anymore. So then I imagine habit would keep you going. But now you have all these products that claim to help you stop smoking. In the long run, a box of those would cost less than however many boxes of cigarettes you'd buy for the rest of your life.

Ok, there's my rant. I'm done. *moves on to the next thread*

They have a lot of stress in their lives, Mega! STRESS!

Cigarettes help to shift all the stress to the second half of your life. :p
In the long run, a box of those would cost less than however many boxes of cigarettes you'd buy for the rest of your life.
Oh yes, and then the money you save can be used to pay off certain debts you keep avoiding! Huzzah!

Thrawn, I did address stress. If you take care of the root of the stress instead of avoiding it, huzzah! Stress disappears along with the problem.

Normally I practice that, or the almighty power of apathy I have developed. Works for me.

I think smoking is a dirty habit with which I'm glad I'm not involved. Especially since I've had more secondhand smoke in the past two months of college than in the past two years of my life beforehand. If you're out of cigs, though, you can always wander around bumming them off people.

i want to relate addiction to Schopenhauer's concept of suffering being the positive element in life, while happiness is merely an illusion caused by the contrast of lesser suffering to greater suffering.

picture a circle on the ground made of burning hot stones. So long as you're alive, you'll walk around this circle, burning your feet on each stone. Once in a while you land on a stone that's cooler than the others. The stone is still hot, but there is contrast between it and the others. This is when you experience the illusion of happiness.

with addiction it's not that you enjoy using the substance or engaging in the behavior so much as that you dislike not using/engaging. Long periods without the substance/behavior cause withdrawal symptoms - irritability, tension, anxiety, sometimes physical symptoms. The sub/beh temporarily reduces suffering. The stress it's relieving isn't from some outside source, it's from withdrawal to the sub/beh itself. In the addiction cycle, it's the occasional cool stone.

i used to smoke and still want to sometimes, it can be a daily thing. I won't tell you not to - you've heard all the arguments, and with restaraunts and public areas starting to be segregated for smokers it doesn't affect me directly as much as it once did. It's a personal choice and it takes a lot of commitment to carry it out. Getting over an addiction isn't something you do once and it's over, you have to keep resisting forever. That's why it has to be your choice... you're the only reliably constant presence in your own life, so you gotta push yourself.

so.. yeah, my thoughts. i think it's sort of related to Schop. but "i'm tired." (excuses)

And guys, smokers smoke because we like to smoke. We like the way we feel after smoking, and we like the actual activity of smoking. Deal with it.

Yeah... and I'm out of smokes as well. It sucks. The only difference, I don't have ANY cigarettes. At least you have cheapies.

oh boy. ohhhh boy.
i live in toronto. the city that had a record number of smog days this year. it's almost easy to say that by inhaling cigarette smoke i was displacing a large amount of deisel exhaust that i would've been inhaling and it might have actuall been healthier for me. the number of particulates in deisel exhaust far outwiegh that of a filtered cig.
at any given time in toronto there are several tonnes of sulphur oxides floating around. a deadly poisnous gas. so deadly poisonous that our government is spending millions to try to reduce it by just 10%. and the american government is spending billions on the problem.

smoking in the face of obesity, smog, pesticides and herbicides on everything we eat... smoking is the least of our troubles.
i know i can't find any info on it but i want someone who says they know someone who got cancer from smoking to prove to me it wasn't cancer from smoking, breathing in the toxic waste that is north america, the food they've eaten...
leave the ****ing smokers alone. focus on the real health problems for the greater populations in society. the media has most of you all brainwashed and focused on smoking and second hand smoke so much so that you don't even realize that urban dwelling non-smokers will get cancer just from living urban. and now more than 50% of the world population lives urban. no wonder cancer rates are on the rise. over half of us live in smog.

has anyone ever looked at the ingredients in perfume? what are the toxic properties fo the individual ingredients?
perfume? oh it won't hurt you. it smells nice. how can perfume be bad for you when they're allowed to sell it to anyone right there in the department store?
what happens when you add three different perfumes with febreeze, some nice fresh smelling bathroom deoderizer, shampoo smell, hand soap smell, and all the other stuff floating around? put all that stuff into your nice warm moist lungs where chemical reactions readily take place.
yeah. smoking is the ill of morth american society. we'll all die from smoking.
****. take your head out of your *** and next time you get on the bus with some ignorant ****ing pig that is slathered in smelly crap tell him you're not allowed to smoke on the bus for the sake of other people's health, why should he/she be allowed to fill my lungs with volitiles of some unknown mixture for 30 minutes while i sit beside him?

oh ****. i'm ****ing fuming.
2005-10-31, 6:03 AM #34
Note to self: Dont upset Evad... ever!

I will add, however, the real ignorant bas****s are the non smokers who take your cigarettes away and #1 destroy them or #2 hide them.

Thats MY property, i paid for them, i dont steal £5 worth of your possessions? do i b****?

Oh, OH! ANd the stupid little weiners who cough when they inhale smoke, then give u a dirty look, and say in their weiner voice "You smoke, I choke"!

The general problem I have with smoking is that the people who start doing it tend to be teenagers, who are mostly clueless anyway and then end up getting hooked for life because they've been smoking since the age of 15 after they originally thought it was "cool" or because they wanted to be part of the crowd. Addiction and the ignorance of young teenagers do not represent an entirely personal choice.

In the end, I don't particularly care about the arguments made by pro-smoking propagandists. I will continue to oppose smoking whenever possible, just like I oppose and work towards eliminating pollution and drug addiction. And I have local, state and federal legislators on my side. In the state of California the smoking rate is one of the lowest in the world - less than 15%, with the USA average now having decreased to about 20%. We're getting to a point where smoking is becoming an issue mostly outside of the United States (especially Europe and Asia). In other words, it's not my problem. Let the Europeans and Canadians do what they want. The USA will set an example one way or another.

I had an acquaintance at school that fought off lung cancer at the age of 10, caused by his father smoking in the house around him since he was born.

I'd like to hear Evad tell it to that guy's face now.
2005-10-31, 6:55 AM #38
Cigarettes suck, I'd never smoke them.

Rolling tabacco is much better. :p Van Nelle Export for the win.

EDIT: It's also cheaper. While I'd pay 4 euro for 20 Marlboro's, one pack of Van Nelle (and Rizla gummies) costs me 5,10 - but I can easily get over 60 cigs out of it.

Amazing, Ruth, how you can once again prove to me how much I dislike smokers.

Yet there is a minority of them who aren't asscrackers.

Every once in a while I'll see someone I think it is really hot.

But then I'll see him/her pull out a cigarette, and my attraction is totally destroyed.

Two of my best friends are addicted to smoking. One has been 'quitting' for like two years now, but she keeps starting up again. The other is only 17, so she can only smoke when she can get it from other people. At a restaurant once, she saw someone she knew smoking (another addicted 17 year old), and ran over for a puff or two.

That's just sad. I don't know why someone would want to be addicted to something which is obviously bad for you.
