Found a wallet today...
2006-02-16, 9:24 PM #1
... with no ID in it.

The thing is, there's a ****load of money in there, in different currencies. There's $900 (!!!) US, 14 British pounds and $70 Canadian. There's a bus pass and some business cards.

I feel so bad for whoever this belongs to. I wish there was an address somewhere in there so that I could return the damn thing, I mean, it's a LOT of cash. But then again, I wouldn't mind keeping it.

Moral dilemma here, folks.

Oh, you found my wallet! I thought I'd lost it for good!
I'm just a little boy.

TOO LATE HAHA

Heh, maybe if you call the police and say, IF I happened to find a wallet and turned it in, and no one claims it, can I keep the cash? :)

Goddamn dude. Karma's paying you back for all the **** you went through. :)

I think you're good if it has no ID at all. Do something useful with the money. :D

Look, I'll prove it's mine. The wallet I lost was rectangular in shape. If the wallet you found is also rectangular, it obviously is mine.

ok if you keep it you are morally obligated to donate $30US to the Jim7 bayonet fund

Turn it into the local police station where you found it, if no one claims it within 30 days it's yours (at least that's how it works here).

Yeah, sure, with the amount of cash in there, I'm going to trust the crooked cops of Montreal with it. Sorry.
2006-02-16, 9:33 PM #14
You're just in luck then, I'm about to become the local police station chief. :)

If it's got an ATM card it must ahve his/her bank on it. Take it there and they should be able to identtify the person.

Yeah, that's what I've been thinking too. the card is blank, but it's an RBC card. they could probably read it and found out who it belongs to and give me his address. I doubt they'd leave me his address though.

I would keep a finders fee. Or the whole thing if you can't find who it belongs to.

Personally I think a reward they might give you is better than a "Finders Fee"

Its not your JOB to find their wallet and then take out money.

How the hell do they have a wallet without identification in it? You'd think they'd have a driver's liscence at least...

Simple. It's because it belongs to a TERRORIST!!!

Dude, what if it belongs to a tourist or somthing? They will be pretty screwed if you keep the money. At least try to find out whos it is. If you cant keep it.
Take that there and put it in here
2006-02-16, 11:06 PM #35
I say it's their problem for dropping it. Seriously, what kind of a moron misplaces a wallet with 900$ cash... Furthermore, what kind of a moron walks around with a wallet with 900$ cash in it?

Sounds like a morally ambiguous situation. Can't turn it in to the cops, they're all crooked. Can't keep it, that wouldn't be right. So donate the money to a good cause.

Better yet, don't spend it, and keep an eye on the local classifieds in the "lost" section and see if someone describes it (along with the amount of money and the different countries of origin).

If you don't see anything for a week, then decide what to do.

Whoever suggested this was karma is probably off-base because you'll inflict so much bad karma on yourself if you just keep it :)

Oops, missed the part about the atm card. I would definitely take it into the bank and have the account owner contacted. Seriously, do the right thing. Having been dealt a few crappy hands in a row doesn't entitle anyone to keep someone else's property.

However, if it had a police badge in it or something then I would definitely say keep it ;)
2006-02-17, 12:55 AM #39
If you try to return it to the owner via the bank, do it so that the bank employees won't have any chance to take the money.

Keeping it wouldn't be wrong so much as not at all the most right thing to do. It's more like 0 than negative, where returning it is in the positive. And you'd probably be thought of as greedy, stingy or selfish, which may be considered wrong as well.

I'd check with the bank. If there's nothing they can do, keep it.
