Of which the PS2 has plenty. Seriously, I don't care who you are, you'll find at least 20 games you like on the PS2. Part of the upside of having a MASSIVE library.
The problem with the PS2's library is that almost all of the games on the console are either complete trash or exercises in mediocrity.

Here is a definitive list of must-have titles that have received universal critical acclaim, and have content clearly not available in some form on another console:

God of War
Final Fantasy X
Kingdom Hearts 2
Shadow of the Colossus
MGS3: Subsistence
Ratchet and Clank: Up Your Arsenal
Guitar Hero

I count 7 games on this list.

Dj Yoshi, I'm sure if you count a million "decent" games that, frankly, I'm not going to waste my time playing with better alternatives available, I guess you could count a heck of a lot of titles.

Forgot: All the other Ratchet and Clank's, I-Ninja, Katamari Damacy, We Love Katamari, MGS2 (hey, I think it's the worst in the series but it STILL kicks ***), Ghost Recon, Jak and Daxter (and all said iterations), Kingdom Hearts, ICO, Winning Eleven, the GTA's...

I think I've made my point.

Actually, putting multiplatform games like GTA, and stuff like this and this on your list completely defeats your point.

Every Nintendo console so far has had a greater quantity of better games, and I don't forsee this changing. I'll probably get a PS3 sometime later too, though.

1 year and 4 months. San Andreas took 8 months to go from PS2 to PC/Xbox though.

I'm not saying the Revolution (I refuse to call it the "Wii") won't have a lot you like too, but there's nothing to be disappointed in about the PS2.

Not to mention, how do you even know you'll like any of those games? You've never played them.

Go Genesis!! :D

Probably the WII, and maybe the 360 (given the announced costs in USD, an $800+ CAD console doesn't sound that appealing for PS3).

Yeah...that sucks. It'd cost less to import it. And 800 is just the basic version.

I can't name 20 games that you'd like because I'm not you. I figured as much was obvious.

And if you can't name 20 games you like for the PS2, you've got issues. Period.

I've played a plethora of PS2 games and I only really enjoyed a handful. The rest weren't bad, they were just all the same. There are TONS and TONS of anime style RPG games and TONS of slash-em-up asian style games and TONS of shoot-em-up GTA games. It gets boring. PlayStation 2 has it's original games for it's specific crowd, XBox has it's original games for it's specific crowd, and Gamecube has it's original games for it's specific crowd. The PS2 may have a MASSIVE ammount of games, but too many of them are just the exact same game. That's just my thought though.

No, PS2 has original games for EVERY crowd. Seriously... I don't think you guys really realize how huge the PS2 library is. Saying you only like 15 PS2 games is like saying you only like 15 PC games, or 15 books.

And a lot of them aren't "the same". I'm talking about imports too (like Taiko Drum Beat, Katamari Damacy, etc).

Close, but no cigar kirby. I'm just saying you haven't been exposed to enough PS2 games to say that you only like that many, I'm sure. I just honestly can't see anyone not liking at least 20 games in the entirety of the PS2 library. I don't even want to know how many games are out for the PS2.

But, as always, you make a pre-emptive judgement without any real knowledge of the subject.

In the last generation I owned all of three consoles, and up until recently I owned a PSP.

Considering only exclusive titles I liked way more Gamecube games than anything else. Followed by Xbox. Followed by PS2, and most of the games I bought for the PS2 based on the recommendation of people like Yoshi ended up sucking so I'm not too happy with Sony fanboys.

Final Fantasy X, God of War, Guitar Hero and Katamari Damacy are pretty much it. I did purchase and play games like SotC. It was a beautiful game and I'm sure it had a lot of artistic merit, but I didn't find it fun. It felt like work. Most PS2 games I've played feel that way, including Devil May Cry which would otherwise appeal to me.

I'm not saying that Microsoft's situation is any better. I bought all of the cross-platform games for the Xbox because of the improved graphics; not because the system had any particular merit. I did enjoy these exclusive-at-the-time titles: Fable, Halo, Halo 2, Ninja Gaiden, Jade Empire and Escape from Butcher Bay. You might be noticing a trend here.

On the Gamecube there are many. Donkey Kong Jungle Beat. Eternal Darkness. F-Zero GX. Metroid Prime. Paper Mario. Wind Waker. Four Swords. SSBM. Rogue Leader. Rebel Strike. Tales of Symphonia. Those are just the games that I would buy again if I lost them.

So, no. There isn't something "wrong" with someone if they can't find 20 games that are enjoyable or worth buying for the PS2.

1) Not a fanboy. But the only games I'd really reccommend anyone are God of War, Guitar Hero, and Katamari Damacy, because everything else depends on your tastes. You might like Ratchet/Jak, just because you seem to like the gameplay aspect more (Gamecube).

2) I wonder why people keep saying SotC feels like work...I loved it. Meh.

3) If you like Gamecube or Xbox better, that's fine by me. I'm just saying, there's bound to be a plethora of games you'll like on the PS2, no matter what genre you're into.

I OWN A PS2. I DON'T own a GCN. The fact alone that I have found a whole lot more games on a console I don't even OWN or have a lot of ACCESS to says a whole lot about the fact that I like it more. I have played a WHOLE lot of games on my PS2. EXACTLY like Jon`C said: They all feel like work. I liked SotC, though.

I mean, really, if you gave me a list of all of the videogames released on the PS2 that received a certain number of sales, or rating, or some-such, I'm willing to bet there'd be maybe 10 on there that I've liked. I'd also be willing to bet I've played 90% of them.

Next Gen?

Wii. And just for the sake of having a high-def console, I'll buy either a PS3 or Xbox 360. I'll wait at least 6 months after the PS3 is released to get one or the other though. I'll make sure to keep up with the reviews and make a decision after the hype has had time to die out.

I'll be preordering a Wii and a couple of games. My next console after that will either be a 360 or a PS3, depending on which comes out first: Halo 3 or Final Fantasy 13.
2006-05-10, 7:51 PM #76
I'll do it for you.

Using This list I'll list 2 lists: The ones I really enjoy, and the ones I've never played. (I won't include multiple releases in the title)

Enjoyed:
Grand Theft Auto
MGS
God of War
Ratchet and Clank
NBA Street
Shadow of the Colossus
Soul Calibur 2
Kingdom Hearts

Never Played:
Pro Evolution Soccer
SSX
Dragon Quest
Winning Eleven
Guitar Hero
Tiger Woods PGA Tour
ESPN NBA Basketball
Fight Night Round
Midnight Club
WWE Smackdown
Madden or NCAA

As you can see, I don't like sports titles. There are a few titles on that list that I've played, sort of liked, then got bored of after the 3rd time playing. The ones I listed as liking are the ones I still play, own, or rent frequently. A VERY Pitiful list next to the 20+ titles I enjoy on the GCN, and the other 5 on the X-box.

So, if you include the multiple releases under individual titles, I've enjoyed maybe 11 or 12 games released for the PS2 on that list. If you take away games I obviously avoided simply because of my genre bias, you've got maybe 3 or 4 possibly enjoyable titles that I haven't played.

GTA--which GTA? There's 3 different titles.
MGS--which MGS? Once again, 2 different titles.
Ratchet and Clank--like 4 different titles.
Soul Calibur 2--Ever play 3?
Kingdom Hearts--1? Or 1 and 2?

Also, play Ico, and Jak and Daxter. I think you'd love both titles.

I've noticed how the balance between the speed and quality of technology between consoles and PCs tends to teeter-totter every few years. First, consoles are ahead, because companies spend so much time and money on research, and developers are making their games for just ONE specialized platform. Then, PCs pull ahead within a year or so because they advance quicker, but in smaller steps. Then the next generation of consoles comes out, then it starts all over.

PCs take smaller steps more often, consoles take larger steps less often, because they are the most profitable ways for each market. So I don't see why anyone is suprised or "worried" that next-gen consoles are "better" than their PCs.

Well, except the 360 isn't that far ahead. Which is kinda sad. But graphics aren't everything.

I could've sworn the PS3 used a next-gen graphics card, and that the 7800GTX was in fact a placeholder in the devkit. And I'm pretty sure the Cell is a bit more capable than your proc.

The thing I find most interesting is now the PS3 should have developers scrambling for it. With a working IDE that does the multithreading for you, it'll be a dream to dev for compared to the 360.
