JFK. He assassinated himself. Which just demands respect.
Hey, Blue? I'm loving the things you do. From the very first time, the fight you fight for will always be mine.

Didn't you know that about JFK? Theres a great documentary on it. It's the first episode of Red Dwarf Series 7.

No matter what president you pick, and for what reasons, someone will come along and tell you how awful they were. That's why I pick Nixon. You can't make him look any worse than G. Gordon Liddy does!

That's because there is no real great economic problem to fix! Increasing the size of the government and spending more and more and raising taxes won't do. We don't need another socialistic New Deal. In fact, we need a LARGE reduction in government bloat. Social Security is all but broke. It was designed to fix a 1930s depressed America. People are living a lot longer than they did in 1930s. You'll have to pour A LOT of revenue into S.S. That's going have to come in through other programs or a tax hike. It should die out and replaced with something better. Preferably, privitization. Yes, energy is pricy. Our dependence on the Mid East is too great and we need to fix that quick. A temporary fix would have been in ANWR but that's been repeatedly shot down. These constant high energy costs will begin to erode the economy esp. if they continue to rise.

Moral of the story: Outright socialism will not work.

I was actually thinking about health insurance and health care in general, which is increasing at a ridiculous rate much higher than inflation. Same goes for higher education. Something absolutely needs to be done about both.

And the hell socialism doesn't work. Plenty of countries are socialist including many modern ones.

Teddy is the best president. How freaking badass do you have to be to take a bullet and keep giving a speech? Really? That's pure badassiousness. I don't think even Hitler could have taken that.

Oh, and godwinned!

Sorry, I said last post, but I just gotta find out why

How can you be in support of his economic decisions when his New Deal caused the 1938 depression which was even worse than the one in 1932? There were less jobs created, more unemployed, and more states plunged into debt. What exactly did he do that was great, other than keep morale high?

Give more money back to the people where they can invest in a health-care system of their desire. You nationalize health-care, and you'll be putting them on yet another bloated government bureaucracy.

Higher education costs are going up. You'll have to ***** to the states on that issue. University of <state>/<state> State University are usually state subsidized institutions. A lot of us at CSUSM have been yelling at Sacrademento to stop tuition hikes. I kind of equate tuition hikes to tax hikes. Private institutions are free to do what they please. If they're too damn expensive, they'll find less and less people enrolling.

Private versus national isn't really the issue here. The real issue is cost. If a national healthcare system can reduce the amount of money it takes to get my yearly checkup, then I'm all for it. If some private version can do the same thing for less, then I'm for that. Simply privatizing health even more doesn't address the real issue of value. Why am I shelling out 50 bucks just so some guy can consult with me for five minutes and hand me a prescription when I can get the same quality health care in another country for considerably less?

Because, for some reason, health costs have spiraled out of control in this country. I say end medical litigation as it is now, which will in turn lower malpractice insurance which will cure part of the problem.

Indeed. If there is going to be further socialization of health care in the US, it will probably be something like basic care and some emergency care for everyone. More complex care, while available, will mostly be private, I think, just to avoid the waiting list troubles that are found in places with social health care.

I don't know who the best prez was, maybe Washington. because he is largely responsible for the fact that the nation exists, and is not a monarchy.

Lincoln did a LOT of great things, but he suspended the constitution for a while. I think he did what he thougt he needed to do and the outcome was great. But he also did the most to destroy the ballance of power in our nation, and made the federal central government much more powerful than the individual states.

1. George Washington - Only non-party president. It's too bad he's foreign policy wasn't upheld by the presidents that followed. It's also too bad that no one took his warning of "party" systems seriously.
2. Thomas Jefferson - Reduced government spending and reduced the national debt by 1/3. Seized the opportunity to acquire the Louisiana Territory.
3. Andrew Jackson - Recommended eliminating the electorial college. He also didn't take **** off of anybody.

Washington was the greatest president of all time.

However, Grant sucked. His administration was probably the most corrupt in the history of the country. And Jackson was an ******* that mistreated Native Americans [more than other presidents did].
Grant, Jackson, and Hamilton ought to be taken off currency and replaced with more worthy American leaders, such as TR, Reagan, and Madison.
2006-06-17, 2:10 PM #65
Jackson was the worst president ever. He constantly broke supreme court rulings and he set the tone for Native American genocide.

As for his overall reasons for the land offers our west to remove the Indians from the East, was a matter of National Security. He also did a lot of other things where, in the short term, the positive effects were not seen and, unfortunately, other Presidents ended up with unduely credit from the results of events that Jackson initiated.

Despite being a fragile time in our countries history when several more power nations have a strong interest in claiming (or reclaiming) it's territory? Hell, there were two reasons why Napolean gave up the Louisiana territory. 1) He needed money. 2) He was planning on retaking it 'from the weak Americans' after he defeated Russia. Jackson realized that we needed to fortify our coastal region presence.
