WORST President of all time!
2006-06-29, 10:55 AM #1
Inspired by KnightRider2000, post who you feel the worst president of all time is!

My vote is as follows:
1) FDR- Sure, he had the guts to try to help America, but unfortunately, he ended up tanking the economy even worse. To this day, we're still forced to suffer his socialistic "reforms" and institutions (Social Security, Medicare, anyone?). He didn't have the balls, however, to openly support the UK. While our allies were down on supplies and getting the piss bombed out of their cities, FDR refused to send troops, ships, or planes.

Lot's of people like to say "Oh, he just wanted to keep his promise to the American people by not leading them to war." If that was right, than why did he start giving weapons to the British and making alliances with the Soviets? (who were in fact, worse than Hitler. They slaughtered more people in their great purge than the total death count from both sides of the war, and their economy still sucked. At least Hitler's people weren't starving anymore). Oh, and too bad he ended up leading us to war anyway. Great way to keep his promise.

2) Jimmy Carter. He's a close second. Basically, this man was an idiot. Knowing that Americans like moderates, he campaigned as one. After winning the election as a middle of the road canadate, he turned out to be a leftwing nutjob. Not to mention his foriegn policy sucked and our economy tanked under him.

Post your thoughts, hehe.

I don't believe that Jimmy Carter was the worst president ever, but even if he was, he is probably one of the greatest human beings of the century. The man is not only generous, hard-working, philanthropic, and dedicated, but he is also highly intelligent.

I'm not denying that. He's been a very generous and peaceloving man since he left office. More people should be like him.

He just sucked as a president. :P

FDR, by far. The reason the US is in such terrible shape economically most certainly traces back to FDR and the New Deal.

Grant's presidency was full of corruption, buddy buddy appointments, people giving him bad advice. He left the office a complete failure and a completely broken man.

Admittedly, that sounds like about 80% of the presidents.

He was already a completely broken man before he was in office. :(

He just didn't do anything.

Now, I know Im just gnawing at flamebait right now, but I can't resist.

You say both of these presidents were bad based on the fact that they were liberals.... That shouldnt be the measure of a president's worth, measure their accomplishments, wiegh our their failures, then come to a conclusion. Think of it objectively, and dont polarize yourself like how the media wants you.

Sorry, but I can't find anyplace where I said they were incompetant because they were liberals. Can you show me where I made that mistake? How about you don't polarize yourself and defend bad leaders simply because they are democrats?

I have measured their accomplishments and weighed their failures. That's why I came to the conclusion that these two suck ***. If I was really "polorized", I'd be all "GEORGE BUSH KICKS ***! CLINTON SUCKED!". Being a liberal has nothing to do with anything. Clinton was a really good president. I think he's a jackass for cheating and then lying to the nation about it, but the nation still prospered under him.

You can usually tell those with a limited grasp of history because they will always name the last president of the opposite political party to serve. In this case, Clinton or Bush.

I say FDR. It's one thing to be a lousy president, but then corrupt? No thanks. Sure, Nixon did some bad stuff in the election, but that doesn't really touch, appointing extra Supreme Court Judges to get your way.

I'd say Bush and Clinton were average. Bush may not be terribly apt, but he seems to do his best. Clinton lied to much. Ironically this was so he could he popular. Sadly it seemed to work. He had a few socialistic policies, but all-in-all he was pretty moderate.
2006-06-29, 3:38 PM #33
George W. Bush. Everything he has done served no purpose other than to erode the values of America. He is a terrible person and seems to be going against the spirit of the founding fathers out of malice.

hurr

No. The last time civil liberties were this bad in the United States was Redscare. Joe McCarthy wasn't a president, though: he was a senator.

Bush seriously believes that freedom of speech should be limited. He believes that the right to privacy does not exist, he does not believe the constitution applies to his own actions. He believes that freedom of the press should only apply when the press is fellating him (Fox News). I am not talking about the actions of congress, I am talking about what Bush is doing. The powers of the executive branch are limited but Bush is abusing every single one of his powers to undermine everything that America stands for.

This is not historical short-sightedness. Even Nixon was an accomplished diplomat and created the EPA. What has Bush ever done for America? Oh right, he created a bloated and ineffective national security agency that's designed to do nothing but restrict your civil liberties. Bravo.

I want to better understand the opinions of the people on this board who consider FDR to be the single worst president of the forty-three ones we've had, especially when it comes to Social Security and Medicare.

The most commong complaint against FDR I hear is the fact that he created Social Security and set the precedent for Medicare (which was actually created by LBJ, not FDR) which are "still hurting this country even today." Who is to blame in this case though: FDR for creating Social Security (which, I should add, worked very well in the 40s, 50s and 60s), or modern politicians for not updating the system for the 21st century by use of privatization or other means? With privatization and other changes it would be possible to ensure a stable Social Security network for decades to come. And one that is necessary for this country, as 90% of seniors in this day and age expect Social Security and Medicare benefits. FDR created a system that was stable for 30 years, which is about as long of a period of time a government program can work without significant change.

The ironic thing is, Jon, that's historical short sightedness in a nut shell. Cicil liberites were greatly restricted during WWII also, but no one complains about that.

I want you to explain this to me to also. Even before the Great Depression, this country had a lot of economic issues, especially with the "boom and bust" cycle of times with strong economic prosperity followed by serious repression (in extremes that people are not used to anymore in this day and age) and an economy built largely on cheap labor working under terrible conditions. That is not what I consider to be in economically "great" shape.

I said "the last time", not "the only time".

Edit: And about that. Are you seriously comparing WWII, a time of real war, to the war in Iraq?

Okay. Let's take this in another direction then. Look at WWII-era American propaganda. You'll find a lot of posters saying things like "YOU can help out, too!", encouraging the civilians to do their part to help the war effort. How can you reconcile this with Bush's attitude of "Shut up and stay out of it"?
