NeS radio adaptation
2006-09-01, 3:42 PM #1
I just wanted to get the ball rolling on this. I wrote a long PM to Geb and Baconfish, but my thoughts are basically to complete a short pilot-type episode of a length between ten and twenty minutes and then based on the success or failure of that go for some complete storyarcs, miniseries-style and with longer episodes (though the whole episode length thing is pretty up in the air until we figure out the relationship between script lenght and show length). My suggestion would be TLTE's merging with Kirby and courtship of Losien which would be drawing from pages 42-44, more or less, but if anyone has other ideas of what to do then by all means speak up.

So I guess what we need are people to get the job done. Sajn is onboard to handle voices, and I've volunteered to handle any musical scoring and editing up the script. Geb also mentioned that he could do some voice acting in a pinch. At this point we probably don't know exactly how many different actors we need, but it'd be good to have a pool of available people seeing as this project will live and die by the voice-acting.

The big question is who-all wants to do what? We need a couple people to proof-read and criticize the script(s), either by email or just posting in this forum and we need someone to actually produce the thing, to edit the sound effects, voices and music into one complete program. Broadcasting and scheduling can be worried about later if/when we have several episodes complete.

So, who's in for what? I can have a script ready for proofreading by next Saturday if people are good to go and such.

^And don't feel like I'm the only writer - if you want to write the script as opposed to editing then that's cool. I'm just saying "I will do this" in the interest of getting stuff happening.

NeS radio should have a seperate storyline from NeS written*

*Bad suggestion.

It doesn't matter to me, just a thought. Anyway, you already know I'm in. Can't wait to start it.

2006-09-01, 3:53 PM #3
I hadn't thought of that - my intentions were to use NeS because it's already written (the radio script will get done much faster). Did you mean you wanted to do a totally new adventure written specifically for this project?

It seems like it would be fun. NeS has gained so many characters over the years and has gone through so many changes. It would be cool to bring in some classic stuff and mix it with the new stuff to make a totally new arc just for the radio show. The story would be written by all of us who work on the show and noone but us can read it. They have to wait to hear it themselves. I think it would be more funny that way. If not, people can just read NeS ahead of time, and then it isn't as funny when they hear it on the radio.

[Edit: Yeah I can be that dude. I love doing that stuff]

Well since I've sort of been roped into heading this[:P] I think that we should try a pilot with Tracer's Idea first, then try some more stuff from the start. Then if it all proves successful we could expand it slightly to a general ISB show, with various stories.
nope.

Great. You're it.

It'd be good to hear if other interested parties are up for the all-new adventure idea. I'm still for making a pilot based on what's already out there and getting the finished product out as soon as we can, but I'll throw in for doing some new spin-off stories once we're established (pending the approval of the other NeS/ISB-types).

And does anyone care what get written for the first episode? The thing with TLTE and Losien seems like as good a starting point as any, but I might get some new ideas and change my mind or something. And I want to get this done; as I mentioned above, my goal would be to have a draft ready by Saturday.

Well the question right now is, are we going to get one person to transcribe the pilot, or make a thread?
nope.
2006-09-01, 4:26 PM #8
My idea was for me to write the episode then post it here for editing.

Though not always me: any of us who want to write could write an episode (I expect more than one person would be needed on this task anyway if we get doing some larger story arcs) then submit it for editing...like maybe we could get Geb or TLTE (though I don't think he's at Massassi too often) to edit. Just stuff like making sure that the characters are doing stuff that's in their character, etc.

Great!

Okay, so I'm going to start writing/compiling the pilot. I think Geb had some thoughts...hopefully he gets his say in here tonight or tomorrow morning. I'll keep combing through NeS to try to find some other possibilities (does anyone have suggestions?).

If I'm really productive I might have two or three episodes done, so we'll have a few options.

Yeah, I'll be replying to this more in full later (I'm feeling lazy right now). In short, my major suggestion would be that we get as many available and interested people to do voice acting as we can, especially if we can get any girls for the female parts and anyone who can do proper accents (British and Russian in particular). The more we get, the easier and more successful this will be IMO.

I'm TOTALLY in on anything we need. I love this idea.

I imagine a radio-show similar to the old days of radio, with an announcer like we used to personify in the earlier days of the NeS.

I'd love to do voices (despite my lack of participation in the written incarnation of NES, or the ISB in general).

I can also be a backup foley artist if Victor isn't able to always do it.

Good suggestion, Tracer. I'm totally in - if no one can come up with a better Russian accent, I've always imagined in my head what TLTE spoke like. Also, I'm a baritone, so if you need generic narrator voice, I could probably suffice. And finally, if you have any problems with coming up with the script, let me know...

Alright, my 2 cents, rambling with no particular structure:

First off, as I said before, I think the most important thing will be to get as many available and interested people as we can to do voice acting. So far we have the following I believe:
  • Gebohq (myself)
  • Victor Van Dort/SAJN_Master
  • Lord Grismath
  • JediKirby
  • Ric_Olie
  • The Last True Evil
  • Voodoosnowflake (if she can find her mic)

Personally, I don't feel the need to limit the number of volunteers at this point -- there are a LOT of characters, and there's bound to be complications, whether it be that someone (like myself) just don't have a voice that works or can only work for one character, or they lose interest, etc. At some point, all of us that are available and interest should probably post some sample voice clips -- our normal voices as well as any varying types we can do. Then the rest of us can listen to each other voices and decide who would be best for which parts and, from there, give it a go with a pilot/test run or whatnot.

As for organizing the NeS content for radio format -- the way I see this is basically how I see the NeS comic (though hopefully will have more success ;)). By that, I mean that it's another medium in which to show NeS. Even if the NeS thread were a perfectly written, publish-able novel, it would need to be revised to better take advantage of the audio format. There would likely need to be more "Gebohq said" or "The Last True Evil asked" before or after dialogue from the narrator to clarify who is speaking (since we can't see them), for example. Of course, the NeS needs editing as is, if it's to be presentable to the public at large (cap of 25 max so far :( Not that Massassi Radio has had that many listeners yet, but still). It'll be up to those re-writing/proof-reading to decide what needs cleaning up and edited to better flow for Massassi Radio as well as the voice-actors, as they'll likely pick up irregularities when saying the lines outloud. Which brings me to my next point: what exactly should we present?

My official answer on this is "you all should present whatever the people helping make this want to present." If we want to read NeS from start to finish, or if we want to start from NeSquared, or (I like Tracer's idea) read random story-arcs as sort of mini-series, or read random single posts, or make new material all of your own, then that's what should be done. It won't do a bit of good to pick one if you all would rather do something else, because it'll show and, eventually, won't show, leaving this to die off. Really, doing them all would be kind of cool :ninja: .... but that's a lot. Once this goes off the ground, if we're going with just one thing, I think Tracer's idea will be the best. As for WHICH storyarc to start off with, I actually don't remember much of the one you mentioned Tracer <_<.... I can't really think of a better one, except maybe the last couple storyarcs we've done in NeSquared. So yeah, we work out some tests, see how it goes, and then try our hand at a storyarc.

The last couple things I want to dabble on is we'll want to figure out when we'll want to air and, before we get ourselves submitting our sample voice clips, a list of the major characters in play -- a short description of their personality (and link to their profile if they have one) and some lines they've said, so the applying voice actors have some lines to work with. The Narrator will be a particularly important one, as he'll likely have a LOT of lines. Also, trying to tackle The Darkside will be challanging, as it's voice is meant to have similar qualities to The Borg (though more emotional and not necessarily meant to be one voice). Mixing background variations of the original voice and/or a background of all the other voice actors' voices quietly underscoring the main voice actor for The Darkside might work, assuming we don't just give it a normal(er) voice.

I think that's all I got for now. I'll be doing what I can to wrangle in at least one more girl for parts such as Maybechild, Losien, maevie, etc. and available/interested voice actors in general.

I was thinking it'd be cool to do the NeS college storyarc (which is actually kind of shortish). Dreamstate would be cool too, but that went on for some time. As it stands, I've got about 20,000 words of the TLTE love story/Kirby fight and 7000 of the part where Darkside and others take over the HoH and Krig flips out and kills a bunch of the heroes.

Anyways, hopefully I can more than one script ready for consideration so they'll be some options.

Sounding good, Sajn.

There, I did something. Now leave me alone, Geb :(
(That voice would be more reminiscent of Wai, as its deep. But Wai isn't southern :p)

I guess I'll post about what my characters "sound like" in my head, if anyone else wants to do them.

CM: Your typical teenage kid with lots of self-esteem and a major ego.

Mimiru: Stern calculative girl, more than not speaks "matter-of-factly".

Subaru: Soft-spoken, but will get a self-esteem boost when with Mimiru.

Wai: Deeper, does NOT sound like a robot, except when he wants to >.>

CM-The-Writer: Just a guy having way too much fun with tanks. Almost always happy sounding, probably the partying type. (He loves tanks, keep that in mind ;p)

hey I'd love to help however I can. I'd definitely love to do any acting I can (you know me, music/theater dweeb that I am) but I don't have a mic. Or, I think you mentioned the score, I may or may not be able to help out with that. Just PM me with anything you need meto do, though I get the idea that Geb will let me know anyway :P

also: if there's a demand for female voices, I don't know how many of my friends have mics, but I tihnk I know some who would be willing to do some voice acting.

Geb, what does Losien sound like in your opinion?
The Last True Evil - consistent nobody in the Discussion Forum since 1998
2006-09-02, 8:14 PM #35
You asked about Losien, but I'm gonna put down Geb too, since he's both the "main character" of NeS (and thus, in theory, will be important in deciding a voice actor) and her brother. Here's what I got in their profiles:

Gebohq
Diction: Though he carries no "accent" since he was raised in the Midwest and is well-traveled, he has a voice (literally) that is easily identified as his own, whether for better or worse.

Losien
Diction: Quietly, usually, but beautifully. Has no discernable accent.

Vague, but the most accurate I think I could get. Part of the mid-west thing is that I remember hearing that professional voice actors are taught to speak like a Mid-Westerner, as they supposedly have the least "accent" in their voice. *shrug* Also, it's character stuff. And by quiet I don't necessarily mean "we should have difficulty hearing her," just to clarify on that matter. Also, for applying voice actresses, PLEASE please please please please DON'T think "oh, my voice is not beautiful at all, so I won't apply" because, first off, there are other female roles and SECOND -- LET US BE THE JUDGE OF THAT!

Hopefully that helped.
The Plothole: a home for amateur, inclusive, collaborative stories
http://forums.theplothole.net
2006-09-02, 9:11 PM #36
And, because I can, what we got for "diction" under other character profiles we got up (this doesn't mean this is all we got, even for these characters -- I'll be posting fuller synopsis-stuffs and the like when I know which roles we need filled for sure):

Hawthorne
Diction: Surprisingly literate. Keeps to himself, stutters occasionally, and often talks himself in circles.

Sok Munkey
Diction: No accent. He has a very dark sense of humor that sometimes surprises those around him. He is a rather quiet talker, and he uses biting sarcasm as opposed to whining and/or complaining.

Sarn Cadrill
Diction: Sarn speaks with an air of confidence. As mentioned, he has an accent of french origin, but it is unknown if he has ever spent any time in France.

Subaru
Diction: Like your average American teenager. She was raised in the USA, then began traveling, meaning she still has her american accent, but with a touch of other cultures.

Antestarr
Diction: Typical American. Tends to vary based on his mood.

Voodoosnowflakes
Diction: Midwestern American. low but soft voice. but when spotting something cute and cuddly or is intoxicated goes ot something of the like she goes into in to a higher pitched giggly voice....depending on mood.

Arkng Thand
Diction: Perfectly articulated, but completely neutral accent. Very much a radio announcer's voice

Mayaal
Diction: Mayaal bears a low, almost fire-like crackling voice with a british accent reminiscant of JediKirby the White. (may bear similarity/contrast with Bhac)

Bhac
Diction: No accent. Tends to use a very large vocabulary. (may bear similarity/contrast with Mayaal)

Thachett
Diction: Remarkably articulate. We don't know how he reads, but somehow he does. Has a cockney accent which shifts based on the situation he's in. He's something of a verbal chameleon in that his base dialect is a clean cockney, but depending on the environment will occasionally adopt regional terms. Has a unique grasp of history and isn't afraid to communicate it when the need calls.

Sasha
Diction: Articulate in mechanical lexicons, moderately fluent in philosophy. Doesn't say much, though. She has a remarkably quiet voice, difficult for some people to understand.

Semievil
Diction: Deep/low.

Dr. Dormouse
Diction: Has a high (and unique) vocabulary.

Ahnuld
Diction: Austrian accent like The Terminator.

Thrawn42689
Diction: Clear?

Sugarless
Diction: Other than maybe saying the occassional "blonde" remark, and having a good singing voice, nothing particular.

Ammobelt
Diction: Gruff.

Guzzard
Diction: Gruff.

Grismath
Diction: Sophisticated.

Keep in mind a lot of those are new and/or minor characters, so they likely won't need voice actors/actresses (for a while at least). I just went down the list of character profiles and copy/pasted everything that had something for "diction."

Some major roles I can see that haven't been mentioned yet:

The Last True Evil
-former Soviet Russian spy. Think Liam Neeson if he were Russian <_<

Ares
-Greek god of war.

Vinny/The Ever-ending Plot
-Plot Incarnate, the equal yet opposing force to the NeS

The Darkside
-a collection of lost and evil souls that hungers for more souls

The Otter
-(often drunk) British oddball.

Maybechild
-she's part squirrely hippy, part stressed-mother figure of the NeS heroes.

Janitor Bob
-knight-like janitor, ridding the world of scum and villainy, but mostly scum.

Sarn Cadrill
-exotic pimpin' know-it-all model hero-type. has multiple personality disorder

Bill Gates
-CEO of Microsoft. Plots world domination and other villainous acts on the side.

Krig the Viking
-beserker, crazy, simple-minded viking. don't call him a gnome.

JediKirby/JediKirby the White
-Hand of NeS, he takes care of everything that goes on behind the scenes and the NeS in general

Galvatron
-heroic robot that used to team up with Geb.

There are certainly others, but I stuck with the roles I figured would most likely need to be addressed.
