He's damn right. In order to succeed in the world you have to be taken and take yourself seriously. It's impossible to succeed without a good grasp of grammar, and etiquette. I personally have a hard time relating to anybody who speaks Ebonics. All of my black friends speak stellar English. Funny how they're also all either attending and succeeding in a university, or are already graduates.

It's because they think that it's their culture. That being inferior is their culture. The problem lies in the fact that they don't realize that their predecessors were all very well educated. The people who worked so hard durring the civil rights movements didn't speak as blacks do today. It's attrocious. All the equality that they worked for and achieved is wasted because in all actuality young blacks often want to separate and distinguish themselves from whites.

I think the idealogues such as Sharpton and Jackson don't help out matters either. They go around screaming and demanding for "better tolerance" and more and more and more and more and more and more and more money from the federal government yet not a word is said about the 60% of 4th grade black children who cannot read!

Someone on my track team flat out called me a racist in front of other teammates just because I support President Bush. It made no logical sense whatsoever because my track coach (Wes Williams) is someone whom for I have GREAT respect. We all love the guy. Oh yeah, he's black. I wasn't too happy that track practice.

About time someone stood up and said that stuff. I've been thinking the same stuff for years now myself, and I am willing to bet I am not the only person on this site who has had those thoughts either. Difference is if we say it, no one would really listen.

Yeah, the race card being pulled is horribly over used these days. I had a coworker accuse me of being racist just because I said I could not stand rap music. I also can't stand country music, and I'm a native Texan. I guess I hate white people as well, huh?

Cosby pwns! This is what the poor black community needs. "A little shove in the rear" as Patton would say, to get them going. If anything is going to help these people out of the slums its him. He's black so he can't be called racist either. Bill really owns!
2004-07-01, 8:31 PM #20
yeah, harsh.. but it needed to be said. There's only so much that can be said for racial discrimination. At some point, the minority communities need to step up and start acting like equals and then it will be easier for us to treat them as such. I seriously think it's past time for us to have a black (or asian/hispanic/etc) president.

What I wonder though is how much of it fell on deaf ears. Seriously, do you think alot of the people he was targeting even heard it? If it was discussed all over the news, maybe. But for the most part, I am afraid it just went over the heads of who he was targeting. Not because they don't care, but rather because they can't see it.

Ebonics is technically a dialect of english. It's vastly simplified and is an attempt to bring consistancy and simplicity to an otherwise chaoticlly inconsistant language. Furthermore, it has gramatical rules like any other dialect of english. people make the mistake of adding a "be" in front of a verb while trying to speak ebonics, but this practice is wrong.

Example:

Wrong usage (that be good.)

Correct usage (That good)

Besides, who decides what form of english is "correct?" Furthermore, why should we care what they say? what are they going to do about it if no one listens to them?

Think about it.

The University of North Carolina has finally found a network server that, although missing for four years, hasn't missed a packet in all that time. Try as they might, university administrators couldn't find the server. Working with Novell Inc., IT workers tracked it down by meticulously following cable until they literally ran into a wall. The server had been mistakenly sealed behind drywall by maintenance workers.

... What? No the **** it isn't - nobody "attempted" to create Ebonics anymore than somebody tried to create English..
A desperate disease requires a dangerous remedy.

A major source of objection to a free economy is precisely that it gives people what they want instead of what a particular group thinks they ought to want. Underlying most arguments against the free market is a lack of belief in freedom itself.

Yes, you are correct in every sense of the word. Unfortunately for you, the punk kids who use thier poorly formed derivative of ebonics are neither literate or intelligent enough to legitimize these claims. I've seen many forms of "ebonics" spoken but the only version that is consistent and understandable can be gleaned from the older generation, who use the nationally recognized version of ebonics which carries many rules about structure and syntax.

Also Cosby is right. BET is raising a generation of young drunk pimps, as opposed to a nation of strong black men. (Which I gratuitiously stole from Slugworth's quit message which is probably from some source I've not come across.)

Ebonics does have seperate, written rules from regular english. Some people in South Carolina were trying to get it taught seperately in schools.

Cosby's a wise man. He's also probably one of the few people who can actually say something like this and not end up in court. He's not sugar-coating anything, he really let some people have it. Does the NAACP have a comment on Cosby yet?

It's doesn't matter if ebonics is "technically a dialect of english". That doesn't make it legitimate in the slightest.

Why do you think actors typically learn to speak with a midwest accent, even if they hail from other parts of the country?

There are different dialects of english and accents too, but certain ones will take you farther in life than others, regardless of whether or not you think they are legitimate. Personally, I do not think it's a shame at all.

Sarn, why should we have a black president just because "it's time" for one? We will have a
black president when the right man comes along.

And to the people defending ebonics, you need to realize how ridiculous you sound. Ebonics is not some kind of alternative english that people choose to speak. It comes from being completely uneducated, and not knowing proper grammar. Alternatively, they speak like that because they think it's cool.

As for Cosby's comments, I agree 100% and it's nice to see a black man saying this because a white man could never get away with such scathing (yet dead right) comments. Maybe people will actually listen and realize that crime is not the black people's culture like they seem to think it is.
