So will the execution be broadcast live on pay-per-view?

I was all for removing Saddam from power, i was all for him being on trial. It was even one of the few cases where I wasn't against the death penalty.

But someone getting a verdict of execution is never cause for celebration.

I'm still against death penalties, even for this case.

I don't see it as a punishment so much as an award. "This man will no longer use your oxygen..."

Countdown to martyrdom,... GO!

The radical Islamists may have hated Saddam in the past for creating what amounted to a secular dictatorship, but wait 10 minutes after he's dead and suddenly he's going to be the Hero of Allah, the great king who the infidels murdered.

Enjoy the ride folks.

I am against capital punishment. However, I am all for Deathmatch Island. I believe that all of the violent criminals from around the world should be placed on their own island, where they can form Death Tribes and murder each other to their heart's content on their very own reality television channel. I am against the idea of trying to rehabilitate violent criminals. Even if you could, that will never bring back the people that they have taken from this world, and will rarely satisfy the victim's family.

Oh, and if that is too Roman, maybe we can at least have prison UFC-like matches? They can either beat themselves to death or at least within an inch of their lives.

As far as Saddam is concerned, I don't think he should be murdered. Just think of how cool it would be if there was a dictator museum where you could go and peer through a glass cage at actual live dictators. Could you imagine how cool it would be to peer in to the eyes of Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin, or even Fidel Castro?

"Saddam Hussein and his co-defendants will be given the right to appeal, but that is expected to take only a few weeks and to end in failure for the defendants."

The BBC disagrees.

I'd rather see him rot in a prison cell for the rest of his life, but meh.

I second that. Prison is a worse punishment than death.

Aww, something as simple as hanging? Surely they could've picked something more exotic.

Hanging is horrible. Unfortunately it's fallen into disuse in these contemporary times, but back in the day it was an art form. You had to choose a rope that was just long enough to snap the neck but not too long that it would sever the head. Chances are quite good that Saddam Hussein is going to die of asphyxiation over a period of several minutes.

Over some hundred and fifty or so kurds.

Which begs the question of what punishment murdering over 600,000 Iraqi civilians should net. It's not quite 4000 times more painful, but I believe the only two options open are drawing and quartering, or maybe flaying.

Are you talking about Saddam murdering 600,000, or GWB?

People tend to think hanging is a traditional means of execution, though it is in some parts of the world. But in the middle east during tribal wars, the conquering leader of a tribe would behead the defeated leader of the opposing tribe with a sword. Afterward they would play polo with his head.

This was considered an honorary way to die. I wonder if they could get away with doing it now a days. Though I wouldn’t indorse that kind of execution. I would rather have him do pay-free work at a McDonalds somewhere in New York for the rest of his life. Where he could stand over a steaming vat of greasy fries and hear insults from customers thrown his way 24/7.
My blawgh.

http://www.iraqbodycount.org/database/ <- reported civilian deaths directly caused by the US invasion.

The 600,000 figure is an estimate I read based on the degradation of public services and the infrastructure and I'm not really prepared to defend that. 45,354, however, I will.

And I'm really mortified how few Americans seem to care about the Iraqi civilians who have died. But we're all supposed to care about 9/11 right?

Bush calls for more "security" measures.
Bush claims dictators powers.

Looks like we're not going down after all, so nevermind.

Saddam executed.
Terrorism increases.
America is attacked.
Bush says "It's not my fault, it's Clinton's fault. I wasn't president for the last 7 years. We need a bigger government with more draconian powers."

I know. It's awful. We lost about 3,000 civilians on 9/11; so our response is to go kill 45,000 Iraqi civilians? Okay...

Keep this up long enough and Georgie will start to approach Saddam's bodycount. Lord...

Uh, didn't he pass it a while ago?

I'm sure the rate is higher, at least, considering how long Saddam's been in power as compared to how long we've been hanging around there.

For one, I believe someone tried to have a Deathmatch Island once....then it turned into Australia for some reason. Though I do think Australia would be awesome if it renamed its self "The Most Awesome Deathmatch Island of the World-a".

I'm all for Roman style fights. I don't care if people die, as long as they have a chance to fight back.

I must say, while I wouldn't agree with the death penalty for Saddam or Hitler, I would care about them a hell of a lot less than others.

It's not murder when it's justified. Killing is not as bad as many people make it out to be you know. It can and has solve problems, but like someone said. We shouldn't celebrate an execution.
