To invert, or not invert?
2007-01-17, 12:21 AM #1
I was thinking recently, while changing a default setting in a game to inverted, that it seems odd that more games don't already have the invert mouse option set as a default.

I then realized, perhaps there isn't such a large majority of gamers as I think who use this setting. So, do you invert the mouse, or don't you?
2007-01-17, 12:28 AM #2
Hell no. If I move my mouse up I want my view to go up. Same goes to console controllers.

Indeed. Mouse is supposed to behave like that: up is up and down is down. Especially in an FPS. If I happen to fly a plane in some game (which is rarely indeed), I grab my SideWinder, which is, obviously, inverted, if you can call normal joystick function that.

The only time I'd invert was for aircraft or similar control, but usually I use a joystick for that anyway.

I always invert, mouse or console controller. Standard feels completely unnatural to me.

It's a right hand/left hand situation. Some prefer normal, others prefer inverted. I prefer inverted but can interchange easily (you get use to at LAN parties -especially when you have to jump on someone else's computer).
2007-01-17, 2:42 AM #7
It depends. I think I usually just get comfortable with the default, whether it's inverted or not.

I use inverted controls on every game that gives the choice. Feels more natural to me.

Inverted messes with my mind. It makes me feel incredibly disoriented.

I used to use it that way, then I got tired of everyone changing my settings when they wanted to try out a game, so I switched.

I think of the mouse as the muscle on the back of my neck. Pull it back, I look up.

Don't invert horizontal though. Sometimes I need it for the camera in platformers, though.

I invert on a console, but not on the PC.

Exactly what I was going to say. It just feels right.

I started out gaming with an inverted mouse. Then, on one occasion after an install I was too lazy to change the setting, played non-inverted for about 10 mins, and haven't been able to go back since.
I think of the mouse more as if it were being used on the screen itself. If I want to look up, then I move the mouse in that direction.

No invert on mouse

Invert on console in shooting games or Starfox type games, just because that's what it was set on default when I played Goldeneye and Starfox and that's how I learned to play

With the Wii it doesn't even matter, though.

Inverted, cause that's how FPS's should be.

When you look up, you don't tilt your head forward, you tilt your head backward. Thus, INVERSION.

And I already explained this the last time we had this thread >.> :D

Yes, but when you look up, you can see up.

Therefore, when you want to look up, move your freaking mouse up!

I switch depending on the game, but I've been doing non inverted for a bit, since I played Call of Duty the other day I didnt notice it wasnt inverted and it just kinda stuck.
2007-01-17, 12:41 PM #33
Wow! I had no idea inverted was so unpopular.

I don't know why I use it inverted (vertical, on PC and consoles), I just always have.

That made no sense :p

Made as much sense as the muscles in the neck argument :P

Anyway, it's completely unintuitive compared to normal mouse behaviour. In any other mouse operation, moving the mouse up moves the cursor (in this case the crosshair) upwards.

Exactly.

Imagine you're looking at a picture of your desktop painted on a wall in a FPS. If your crosshair is over the center of the desktop, which direction do you move your mouse to get the crosshair over the My Computer icon in the top left corner? Which direction would you move your mouse if you were looking at your actual desktop?

My first FPS was Descent, and that was inverted by default, ever since then I have to play inverted.

Since it's an FPS, the cursor would be where I'm looking, so I guess my muscles contract in order to get up to My Computer, thus pulling back, in order to look there.
