It's not an English word in origin. It was probably 'imported' from Latin.

In the language of Latin, it is pronounced as Wee-sta. V's are like w's. But then again, Wista.

I pronounce it the americanized way, which is Vihsta, and it's also the correct way because that seems to be the way the people who named it pronounce it, and therefore intend it to be pronounced...if you want to get technical. I actually vary my pronunciation of that word in general quite a bit, though, depending on where I am, who i'm talking to, and what I'm talking about.

no. "Dictionary" isn't Italian

It's Vih Stah. Regardless of the word's origins, or even its current dictionary pronunciation: Microsoft calls it VIH-Stah. That's it's name.

You're going to let Microsoft tell you what to do?!

Pretty soon they'll have a monopoly on words!

So you people who say "veehstah", you've never used vista in your vocabulary before? Like "look at this beautfiful vista!" I've NEVER EVER heard anyone say veehstah. EVER. And there is a major road in my city named Vista. Everyone refers to it as VIH STUH. EVERYONE. If someone said "look at that beautiful veestah!", I'd probably punch them for sounding like a moron.

No, actually, I have never ever heard it used in my area. Ever.

I only know the word through reading. And I certainly don't ever use the word.

Free, EVERYONE in New Hampshire calls soft drinks soda and EVERYONE in Alabama refers to it as pop. Just because EVERYONE says Vihstuh where you're from doesn't mean EVERYONE says it that way.

I can feel justified in saying "veestuh" because of that ambiguity of pronunciation that exists in English to begin with, and because everyone will know exactly which word I am using no matter which way I say it. And if it's not in the dictionary now it probably will be in 20 years. :D

I've used it in my vocabulary before. In front of a large group of people. None of which complained about how I said it.

In my state, we have a city named "Versailles". Half the people in the state call it "Ver-sails".

I guess the French got it wrong. :saddowns:

Never, you scoundrel! If I were not busy with preparing a light tea I would challenge you to a duel!

To be fair, I'm more flamboyantly a Pie and Pudding eating Northerner than flamboyantly British. And that, I shall never tire of.

I've heard two ways of saying "Vista"

1) ¡Oy hombre! Debemos ir a [VEE-stah]...
2) Hey. I need to go to [VIH-stuh]...

No one around here from 1 says it in 2 and vice versa.

Yes, but Californians, despite having been there for more than 100 years, have yet to figure out how to say "Los Angeles", "San Fransisco", and "San Diego". :P

...how are you supposed to say that Wolfy? I know Angeles, but the others?
2007-02-22, 10:38 AM #60
And some people from Mizzou still don't know how to spell "San Francisco."

Shut up! :(

Vinny - most people say "San Diego" (short a), and it should be "Sawn Diego".

"Sawn Diego" Say that out loud for a laugh. aw != short a sound (ah).

"Sahn Diego" is how it should be said. But I still Americanize it!

"Sawn Diego", said in the same fashion as "saw".

Most people say "San Diego" like the word "sand".

Correctly.

Which is to say, as of this posting, 15 people are pronouncing it wrong.

The dictionary, then, is wrong, as anyone who's taken a week of Spanish can inform you.

I thought we already established that it doesn't matter what it's pronounced in another language.
2007-02-22, 1:44 PM #71
Maybe it should be pronounced in the same way that the people who made it pronounce it.

Yes, the video is obnoxious, but they say the name several times.

Given that it's a Spanish word, and not English, the proper way of speaking it is relevant.

Thank you!

It's their product, we go with their pronunciation. Everyone seems to be going along with Wii, despite how wrong (IMO) it sounds in comparison to the spelling.

Secondly, I have always pronounced the word vis-tuh. I've never, ever, in my entire life, encountered, seen in a movie or tv, etc someone who said "veestuh".

Also, watch That 70's Show some time. Vis-tuh Cruiser. QED.

To be fair, there are hundreds of words bastardised across dozens of languages and pronounced in various different ways. Immediately springing to mind is the English word 'mug' (as in big cup from which you drink tea or coffee) which is now part of the French language and is "le mug" but pronounced 'Frenchly'. The fact that they are pronouncing it 'wrong' to my ears doesn't matter, because that's hwo they say it over there.

So, err... yeah, everybody's right.

(As long as you pronounce things in your mother tongue and not from the derivaticve language)

So every word taken from a different language must be pronounced how it was from where it was derived? Dun think so.

I'm still saying it Veesta and you can't convince me not too! Isn't that great? :D

Though in the case of the "Vista Cruiser" I would say Vistuh because it sounds ugly the other way.
