The engineer I work with at Microsoft says Vihstah. Given that it's now a registered trademark and a brand name, I'm going to go with what the company who made it says.

edit: I should note, that this specific engineer is east Indian. His English is quite good, but he has a noticeable accent. Considering this, I take it as conclusive evidence, as the dialect he makes use of would generally use the alternative pronunciation.

To my ears "Windows Vihsta" sounds horrible. The repetition of the "ih" sound makes the word sound like nothing. The word "Windows" completely overpowers it and makes "Vihsta" sound like a kind of repetition of the sounds from "Windows".

"Windows Veesta", on the other hand sounds like a product.

Because a short i sound is used in two letters in the product title, you bastardize and likely disenfranchise the product by pronouncing it incorrectly?

Even the Spanish should call it "Win-doe-z Vih-stah" because that's the title of the product, and thus, it's identification. EVEN if we're talking language purism, Vih-stah is the cross language identifier. You're breaking the concept of language by arguing that there's multiple pronunciations. "Veestah" is the Spanish dialect for the word that means distant view. "Vih-stah" is the American English dialect for the same word.
"Win-doe-z Vih-stah" is the pronunciation for the product recently released by Microsoft. World wide.

How can you even argue the CORRECT pronunciation?

But that's not the question in the title. How do YOU pronounce it?

Vista, however, is not an english word.

Kirby, the word "harassment" has two different pronunciations that's split between generations. There's a word (though I'll be damned if I can't remember what it is) that has 3 official pronunciations - decided by a fancy board and all.

Language is dynamic, that is all.

(Now admittedly, that's not actually a justification for me pronouncing it "Veesta" when the product name is clearly "vihsta". In fact, at this point I'm just being difficult. Don't expect me to stop though. I've got a good 20% on my side :v:)

There are few words in English that did not come from other language. But it doesn't matter how it was originally pronounced, because we're speaking English now.

And like Kirby was saying, the product name is Vista. Vihstah. Even if you're speaking Spanish, you would say Vihstah. Just like they don't say "Neentendo De Esse" instead of "Nihntendo Dee Ess."

You see, I'd look a lot smarter if you were either not lying or lived in a place where nobody was perfect.

We get people pronouncing things differently all the time. Just because a company pronounces something a certain way doesn't mean everyone's going to pronounce it that way.

If you name a product "Tomato", say because of it's shape / colour, and pronounce it "Toe-May-Toe" would it be wrong to pronounce it the OTHER correct way?

If so, then companies sure are picky about things they shouldn't be picky about. Concentrate on making the product good, please.

Except they are.

We can go on forever about "I'm right, you're not". The fact is that people pronounce things differently, nobody's perfect, and the world doesn't revolve around one person and things can go differently than said person's way.

Aren't those what make up accents? Dialects are when a word gets so mispronounced it turns into another one? Oversimplified, but that was always the gist of those two words to me...

When BSU was playing Louisville in the bowl game last year, everyone in Boise pronounced Louisville incorrectly and everyone in Louisville pronounced Boise incorrectly. We all said Lewey-vill and they all said Boy-zee. You can always tell out-of-towners because all of them say boy-zee instead of boy-see.

None of that compares to Worchester, MA. It's pronounced "woo-ster." Seriously, what in the ****? Why is there an "rhc" in the word if you just leave it out in pronunciation? I guess that's Massachusetts for you.

because try to say worchestershire sauce properly. IT'S HARD. so instead we are lazy, and shorten a word to near unrecognizability. Fantastic, huh?
