Does 0.999 repeating equal 1?
2007-03-09, 7:32 PM #1
As part of an ongoing study to see how stupid Massassi is, I frequently post these polls and note how their results change over time.

You must explain your answer.

I used to have an equasion somewhere that I saw on TV which proved .9... = 1. I lost the equasion.

You mean like this: 1/3 + 2/3 = .9999(repeating) = 1

I think the correct answer is Yes but I voted I don't know because I don't really care. Blame Greenboy.

No, it involved some multiplication and stuff, I'll go look for the paper and see if I still have it hidden somewhere.

There are many ways to prove that .999... = 1. My personal favorite is the equation for a geometric series.

no, if .9999999... truly is .9999999.... then it does not = 1... it is .9999999... unless you add .1111111... or unless your not dealing with absolutes.

It goes something like this. It's dumb, I know:

"What would happen if a car made of diamonds (the hardest natural material) goes fullspeed into a wall made of diamond (again the hardest natural material)?"

I'd say that both the car and the wall will shatter. But if there's not enough kinetic energy to do that, the car will bounce off the wall (assuming it's anchored sufficiently well) in a very good approximation of a perfectly elastic collision.

I'm not sure what there even is to debate about this one

EDIT: ^^^ Okay!

That question is at least a bit more reasonable. I could see how you would answer it incorrectly.

Both the car and the wall would shatter into thousands of pieces. Diamond is hard, but it is not strong.

Here's a way to think about it. Glass is much harder than steel. What happens if a car made of glass goes full speed into a wall made of glass?

It actually would depend on alot of things..

Like how the diamond was arranged, the thickness of the car and the wall.

Etc.

That doesn't make it not a stupid question to aks. It's about as smart as when a three year old asks something like "How many miles in the world?"
2007-03-09, 8:44 PM #22
Yes.

0.9 repeating = 1

Why?

Let x = 0.999...

Equation (1): 10x = 9.999...
Equation (2): x = 0.999...

Subtract eq (2) from eq (1) to get:

9x = 9

Hence,

x = 1.

.999 repeating does not exist. It's not a number; it's an anomaly in our number system and not an actual representation of any quantity or mathematical constant.

Furthermore, if you do allow for repeating decimals to exist as an approximation for the fractional values unrepresentable by a number system, then .999 repeating must equal 1 in order for our current definition of mathematics to remain consistent.

OBVIOUSLY IF .333333333 REPEATING IS ONE THIRD THEN IF YOU TIMES THAT BY 3 YOU GET .999999999 REPEATING SO OBVIOUSLY IT IS 1

0.999... repeating gets infinitely closer to one for an infnite amount of time.
So in theory yes.

Freelancer, he made a thread about a year ago asking this very question. People spent 3 pages explaining it to him.

I also made a thread, and I'm still oblivious to the concepts. Numbers are wasted on me.

Actually, I believe diamond was referred to as "the hardest metal known to man"

Well, it's an annoying matter to me. Like, I can see how 0.999999999~ can round up to 1 but as that itself it can't be 1.

Just like the final second of 2004 wasn't 2005.

Or something.

I voted "I don't know" yet "I don't care" would be more accurate.

There was a forum in which people were debating whether or not a car made of diamond "(one of the hardest, if not THE hardest metal known to man)" would kill a brick wall on impact. Someone screenshotted it and posted on 4chan, and there were some lolz.

There's an image macro of it somewhere out there.
