.9999....

The more 9's the closer you get to one.

A finite number of 9 will never reach one. But we're not talking about a finite number are we? Stop treating it like one.

We are using a base 10 number system. All possible fractions between 0.999... and 1 are accounted for by the infinite series. Hence, there is no mathematical difference between them.
By saying there is a number in between them implies that you don't understand the concept infinity or that you deny long division.

Also, does
+0.00000r = 0?
-0.00000r = 0?

Hey, I'm quite proud of the fact that I can divide 1 by 1 and get 0.9r. Also, I resorted to "mathematical theatrics" because I couldn't think of anything else to get the point across.

FYI: Here's a reference to this argument:

http://www.reference.com/browse/wiki/0.999...

Turns out even mathematicians get confused by this one and continue to argue about it. I'm going to sit on the wall and say 0.999(9)->1, so in most cases you can say =1.

I always figured one could define:
0.999... = 1 - dx
and so in the limit of dx->0, 0.999->1
I guess whether or not tending in the limit is the same as equality is a semantic debate, but I would say yes. 0.9 followed by an infinite number of 9s must be 1.

I can't really comprehend infinitesimally close values but I just know the 1/3 * 3 = .3333.... * 3 proof that a lot of people have referred to already. Also infinitesimally means its 1/infinity which is pretty much 0, so if it has an infinitesimal distance its a distance of 0.

I e-mailed my math professor from last year about it:

Here's why 0.9999.... = 1:

First, let x=0.99999.....

Then 10x = 9.99999.....

and 10x - x = 9x

and 9.9999..... - 0.99999 = 9.

Hence 9x = 9

so x=1.

This is really about the same as the fact that 0.33333..... = 1/3,
but this one seems to disturb
people a lot more for some reason...

Here's a question, if subtracting .000....1 is equal to subtracting 0, then it must be the same as adding right? So 1.00000......... 1 = 1?

If you could put a further digit after an infinite number of zeroes, then yes, tinny, 1.00...1 would equal 1. However, an infinite number of zeroes means there is no place to put that final 1.

I think some mathematicians were drinking when they established some parts of the system.

Yes. Because the 1 is followed by a decimal point and then an infinite string of zeroes. Because that's what 1 is.

There is no real number that you can subtract from 1 to get 0.999_. It doesn't matter how many zeroes you add to the back of the number you will never ever find a place to put a 1.

Yeah, the rule also doesn't apply to just 1 either.

sod the maths, they're totally different, one of em has a zero, a full stop, a load of nines and then sometimes an r.

1 has.... a 1.
