The season finale is actually cut up into three parts, this being the first one. Would a season finale start out with fight scenes and explosions? No, it starts out slow and builds it up.

Oh, I'm not assuming that they have to succeed. I'm just saying the timing's wrong for him to blow up. Although I could have that wrong as well because I've had no end of difficulty keeping up with all the little nuances.
