The beta for Steam's improved matchmaking and (FINALLY!) improved buddy list/friends function is now live!

Steamspace anyone? It's like a free Windows Live/Xbox Live. With the new friends you can voice-chat out of game, there are facebookish groups you can join, schedule events etc. A very nice step-up for the Steam UI, and best of all it's free. You can also add non-Steam games to Steam and use all these functions inside ANY game.

You can set up a profile at the link I posted, and to update your Steam client go to Settings and choose participate in Steam Community Beta. Someone start a Massassi group!

This has pretty cool potential; it's really easy to schedule something like a NWN campaign or JK game through Steam, and the chatroom is more accessible than IRC.

You can now add Non-Stream Games to your Steam List. It's under the Games menu at the very top. It is currently unknown as to whether Steam will track their stats like XFire...but i'm betting that if it doesn't now it will soon.

Xfire was okay...kind of like a Steam lite...but Steam Community is like nuking the competition. All it needs now is Gamertags...and to stop being a beta.
